HONORABLE MENTION RECOGNITION
for William Morton Collegiate and Gladstone Elementary
On Tues. Oct. 28th, Mrs. Blondeau and Mr. Warkentin attended a recognition ceremony at the Legislative Building with the Honorable Sharon Blady, Minister of Healthy Living and Seniors and Dave Schellenberg, Chair of MB
Council on Aging. The principals attended as representatives of their respective schools to receive a certificate for
school contributions in promoting an Age-Friendly community. Last year, the GES Grade 3 students paired up with
Senior Pen Pals. WMCI hosted three community brunches in conjunction with the GWRC and GASSP where we ate,
played crib, played bingo, and enjoyed being a community! WMCI also purchased a stationary bike for both our
students and for our seniors to use during hallway walking as part of everyone’s physical activity plans. It is hoped
that this certificate serves as a reminder that all community members play an important role in defining what kind
of community we want to be. Relationships are vital in building connections between today’s youth, teens, adults,
and seniors!!

WARRIORS FOR CHANGE
We have been very busy preparing for our We Day event, but we also have been running our We Scare Hunger
campaign to collect food for those less fortunate. We are hoping to get 250 items of food to donate by the time
We Day comes on Nov. 7th! Send in your food to help us help others!
As well, between Nov. 1st and Nov. 14th we'll be collecting items for Operation Christmas Child
again. Donation ideas include school supplies, hygienic items (like wash-cloths, toothbrushes,
combs), toys (please no used items - new only), and other small gifts (such as hairclips, clothing, etc.) For a complete list of acceptable items, go to www.samaritanspurse.org.

November 7th is WMCI’s very first local We Day! This will be an all-day event held in
the WMCI gym, and will include the school's annual Remembrance Day service. We
have a very exciting day planned, filled with performances from groups such as the
Red Cross Harmony Project, Swamp Gas, and Siloam Mission, as well as performers
from local schools. The day will finish with Shawn Boothe, a hip-hop motivational
speaker from Ontario who encourages students to ‘live their legacy.’ Our theme,
‘Education can Change the World,’ will give students inspiration to make a change
in their communities and around the world.
There is no cost to attend WE
DAY Gladstone, and all students at WMCI will attend, as well as students from the elementary schools. Please bring a lunch to the
event, as lunch will not be provided and Baldy's will be closed that
day. We can't wait to see you there!

The Central Manitoba Choral Workshop took
place on Thurs., Oct. 16th in Winkler. Students in
grades 9-12 from all around central Manitoba
along with two students from WMCI, Azaria
Neuschwander and Hanna Sollner, took part in
the day. They worked on music all day in their
choirs with guest conductors in preparation for a concert
later that evening. The Central Manitoba Youth Choir also
began their tour that evening with their first performance
at this concert.

Students must submit registration forms to Mrs. Poschenrieder. THESE ARE OVERDUE!! It is
important to keep our records up to date with current medical info, emergency contacts.
 All student fees, extra-curricular fees (if applicable), and course fees (if applicable)
should also be paid ASAP to Mrs. Poschenrieder. These fees help pay for activities throughout the year, tournament entry fees, yearbook, and consumable supplies in elective courses
(like sheet metal, sketch books, etc.)
 You must notify the bus driver if your child will not be on. Otherwise, there are delays, and buses arrive late.
 You must notify the school if your child is absent for any part of the day and for any reason. This applies to all grades. If
you do not call in or send a note, it is assumed your child has skipped class. This may result in detentions or other unwanted consequences.
 WMCI is a nut-free and fish free school. We have many students, including students from other schools and community visitors who are allergic to these items. Please help us reduce the risk for these individuals.

SENIOR VARSITY BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
The Senior Boys’ Volleyball team has had a successful season so far! Our record is 1 win and 4 losses, but
all losses were within 8 points and all games took an extra set for the opposing team to take the win. Our
last home game against Elton on Oct. 23rd was especially entertaining! Whether it was the incredible fan
support and school spirit displayed on stage or the combination of the passion of the senior players and determination of the junior players because it was their last home game of the regular season, your WMCI Warriors played
amazingly! We didn’t get the win, but the team was “pumped” with how they had played…..TRUE WARRIOR SPIRIT.
The team is still practicing in preparation for “A” playoffs in Elton on November 6. Hopefully, our season will extend
to Nov. 13th at the Zone Championships. GO WARRIORS GO

Cross Country
The Cross country season came to an end for the WMCI warriors on Oct. 15th with the Provincial
meet at the Epinette trails in Spruce woods . The course was quite pleasant, except for the many hills
that both mentally and physically wore down a number of athletes, slowing them down or even forcing them to walk. The weather was beautiful and sunny, making for a perfect day for the race.
In the senior boys category, Clay Ferguson finished 232nd out of 329 runners. In the senior girls category, Sonya Strocen
finished 48th, Marie Lou Schneeberger was 74th, Megan Sollner finished 109th, Hanna Sollner came in 173rd, Kelsey
Tonn finished 192nd, Amanda Doell placed 195th, Shayla Mahon was 232nd, Hayley McCaskill finished 233rd, Hailey
Smith made 261st, and Keiana Fehr finished 266th out of 286 runners. For many of the athletes who ran at provincials
last year, their results were quite a bit better. The Varsity girls team finished fourth in the team category out of all the A
to AAA schools in the province for the second year in a row. Congratulations on a good achievement and great job
done! The results were great for our school as many of the athletes have only been running X country for the last three
years. On this note, WMCI is looking for more athletes, especially boys who would like to run, to help with conditioning
in another sport, and to help make our team better. Good luck in the future to our graduating athletes: Marie Lou
Schneeberger, Megan Sollner, and Keiana Fehr.

STUDENT COUNCIL
October was a very busy month for Student Council! We wrapped up our magazine sales, gathering $3720.00 in sales, profits
from which will be used to help pay for the planned ‘Much Dance’ coming up later in the year. Thanks to everyone who supported this fundraiser! Breast Cancer Awareness month was very successful, raising over $200 dollars to be donated to
breast cancer research. October went out with a bang with our Halloween activities which included pumpkin carving, trick-or
-treating, and costume judging. November is a bit calmer in comparison, with two major events. These are Remembrance
Day and clothing sales. Be sure to watch for order forms and sales days to try on some clothing! October went by so quickly,
and soon enough we'll be planning for Christmas!

Conditioning practices will start in November after Volleyball has finished and will run until the Christmas Break
and then resume in the New Year. Practices will be from
3:30 pm to 4:30 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

LIBRARY NEWS
October was Manitoba School Library Month and at 11:05 on
Oct. 27th, WMCI staff and students took 20 minutes to ‘Drop
Everything and Read.’
The library has recently received over 40 new titles by familiar
names such as Sarah Dessen, John Green, Laurie Halse Anderson, Jessica Warman and Lisa McMann, as well as titles by various new authors. So if you haven’t picked up a good book lately,
stop by to check out the new selections. There is something for
everyone!

Career & Technology Studies
46 students enrolled in the Career & Technology Studies program at MacGregor Collegiate, where they
participated in a full-day safe work practicum under the guidance of Safe Workers of Tomorrow and through
partnership with Rosehill Woodcrafters, MacGregor & District Hospital, MacGregor Elementary School and
the MacGregor Fire Department. Topics covered included worker rights and employer responsibilities, hazard recognition and control, health and safety legislation, WHMIS, injury reporting and the role of the Workers Compensation Board. Presentations were delivered by energetic and knowledgeable SAFE Workers of
Tomorrow staff who used a variety of techniques to engage participants and foster student-led discussions.
Students received a workplace safety and health resource book and other useful items to help them better
prepare for the world of work. Following the morning’s presentation students toured partner work sites to
implement a safety audit and learn from site partners about the health and safety issues specific to their
work place.
85 grade nine students at both William Morton Collegiate and MacGregor Collegiate also received safety
training through a one hour presentation geared towards preparing them for the Nov. 5 Take Your Kid to
Work Day, while CTS students at William Morton completed a 3-hour training session.
Since Safe Workers of Tomorrow started in 1997 they have presented to well over 200,000 students
across Manitoba, last year presenting to 39,274 students. As part of the CTS (Career & Technology Studies)
program, Pine Creek School Division is committed to preventing workplace injury and fatality among young
and vulnerable workers by raising awareness of workplace safety and health issues. For more information on
