Principal: Mrs Sharon Saitlik Assistant Principal: Mr Craig Crouch School Council President: Funcare ph: 9897 4495 Remembrance Day Ninety-one years ago at 11am on 11 November 1918, an armistice brought an end to four years of hostility and destruction and nations around the world celebrated the return of peace. During World War I, more than 60,000 Australians died and an additional 156,000 Australians were wounded or taken prisoner-of-war. Until 1939, the anniversary of the end of World War I was called ‘Armistice Day’. Following World War II, which saw the loss of over 39,000 Australians, the British and Australian governments changed the name to ‘Remembrance Day’, making it one to commemorate all who have suffered and died at war. More recently, 41 Australian soldiers have been killed and 256 wounded (including two sailors and one airman), the majority since October 2007. Red poppies are worn on blazers, shirts, jumpers and other items of clothing on Remembrance Day to remember those who died during war. Poppies were among the first plants that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War I. Some people believed the popular myth that poppies were rich in their redness because they blossomed from grounds that were saturated with soldiers’ blood. On Remembrance Day 2014, Australia will reflect on the 102,000 men and women who never made it home. Our school captains will make a special announcement to commemorate the day on Tuesday. The students all performed very well and made us all proud. After the competition, students competed in a Bocce tournament and Grace took home the winner’s trophy. The students played some soccer clinic activities and were treated to lunch, as well as entertainment by an Italian grandmothers’ choir. Thank you to all the parents and students. Juliana Quinn LOTE Italian FUNCARE As we have moved into November, it’s important that all children attending Funcare have a hat to wear when playing outside. Increasingly children are being encouraged to leave their school hats in the classroom so it’s always available during the school day. To avoid lost hats, or children having to spend the day inside, Funcare asks that you keep a second, sun smart hat (which does not have to be uniform) in your child’s school bag. This will allow school hats to be kept safely in the classroom, and ensure your child has access to a hat at Funcare. Canteen News and Roster A reminder that Canteen is CLOSED each Thursday. Edition # 9 Cheryl Griffin Teacher Librarian Year 4s – Picasso Wire Faces Year 4s looked at Picasso’s abstract paintings and then created a wire sculpture of an abstract face. The first step was to draw an oval shape on a piece of paper with a side profile of a face through the middle. Students moulded wire over the top of the lines and twisted the wire together to keep its shape. The eyes, hair and eyebrows were created with rainbow and coloured wire. Each face was connected with a neck (stand) to hold up the sculpture Michelle Haymes Visual Arts Teacher We are intending to run Seasons for Growth again next year (2015) at Mont Albert Primary School. The dates are yet to be decided, however possibly in Term 1 or 2. For those who are not familiar with the program, it is designed for children and young people who have experienced significant change, loss and grief in relation to family breakdown, separation, divorce or death of a significant other. It is a selective program that caters for students in Year 1 through to Year 6. Students are grouped according to age and the material is age appropriate. The Seasons for Growth Program consists of 8 sessions. The sessions follow the cycle of the four seasons. The program is run during the school day by trained staff and has run at the school for ten years or so now, with very positive outcomes. If you think your child could benefit from such a program, please fill out the form below and return it to me at school.
