October 15 through the 23rd I had the
opportunity to visit South Korea, and it was the
chance of a lifetime. The purpose of the trip was to
learn about Morning Prayer and how it had
transformed churches in South Korea. It is the hope
of Bishop Cho that pastors will become more
spiritually vital because if a pastor is not spiritually
vital, then it is not possible for congregations to
maintain or become spiritually vital. Spiritual vitality
is the type of faith in Jesus that grows and becomes
mature. Practicing Morning Prayer is one way that a
person can grow in their faith.
Intercessory prayer is a powerful means for
God’s will to be done in the lives of those for whom
the Holy Spirit directs a person to pray. George
Meuller lived during the 1800’s and did not ask
others for anything, but only God. God wanted
George Meuller to build orphanages and so he
prayed 670 days for the 1st orphanage before
building was begun. The second orphanage George
prayed 7 years and the third orphanage he prayed
for 11 years. A friend asked George to pray for their
children to profess faith in Christ and so George
prayed. 1st child= 1.6 years; 2nd child= 5 years; 3rd
child= 12.5 years; 4th child= 40 years; 5th child=
became a Christian after George died. I believe
God is calling me to this type of ministry here at
KUMC where I intercede on your behalf. Pastor
Hong, the Senior Pastor of the Beyeoung Methodist
Church, said that persistent prayer like this is like
digging for water because you have to continually
pray and go deeper. If you do, then you will find
“water, gas, diamonds.”
What is Morning Prayer that the
Korean Methodist Church and other denominational
churches practice? At 5AM congregants gather and
begin the Morning Prayer service with signing and
will sing three hymns at a fast tempo. Afterwards a
Lay Person will pray and then a Pastor will read
Scripture and preach for about 20 minutes. After the
sermon the Pastor will say three times, “chee-yo,
chee-yo, chee-yo,” which translates as, “Lord, Lord,
Lord.” Immediately following this everyone begins to
pray aloud while a person plays various songs on
the piano at a fast pace.
Praying aloud
simultaneously is referred to as Tongsung Kido, and
goes from 5:20AM until everyone finishes. When a
person is done praying they simply get up and leave
so people leave after praying anywhere from 10
minutes to an hour. The Pastor kneels and prays at
the chair in which he sits behind the pulpit and in so
doing the Pastor leads by example.
In what ways can we incorporate Morning
Prayer into the life of KUMC? I have been blessed
by practicing Morning Prayer despite the challenges
so much so that I want to incorporate Morning
Prayer into what we do here at KUMC. First, I am
going to be here at KUMC Monday through Friday
from 7AM to 8AM for Morning Prayer. Anyone who
would like to join me and is able to join me is
welcome. Those mornings I will not be at Morning
Prayer I will announce during Sunday Morning, send
an email, or call those who regularly attend. I want
to lead by example. Second, we will gather the first
Saturday of the month for Morning Prayer. For
those who have kids or work and are unable to join
me during the week we will meet from 7AM through
8AM on the first Saturday of the month. This way
parents can take turns attending Morning Prayer on
the 1st Saturday of the month. Third, we will practice
Morning Prayer during the season of Lent. During
Lent we will meet Monday through Saturday from
7AM to 8AM to pray together and to read through
the Gospels or the New Testament.
In these three ways we will incorporate
Morning Prayer into the life of KUMC. I want you to
do what the Holy Spirit leads you to do concerning
Morning Prayer.

Building Security Procedure
To insure everyone’s safety, please lock the front
door 5 minutes after meeting start time. It would be
helpful for Team Members to have the Team
Captain’s cell phone # in case they are locked out.
In celebration of Advent and Christmas, you will
be able to order poinsettias and/or make a donation
to C-CAP in memory of or in honor of loved ones.
The three stem red poinsettia’s are in an eight-inch
pot and will be available for: $18.00 per plant.
Please call the church office or pick up a form at the
church. Please designate on your check whether it
is for C-CAP or a poinsettia. All orders need to be
in the church office by: December 7th.

BUILDING USE
If you use the building, please make sure that
when you leave you check to be sure that all the
lights are turned off and all the bathroom
faucets are turned off. Also, if you use the
coffee pots please make sure they are turned off
when you leave. Don’t forget to lock the doors

Thanksgiving is that time of year when
we look around and say “THANKS” for
all that God has given us. Paul tells us
in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "give thanks
in all circumstances; for this is God’s
will for you in Christ Jesus". I can’t
begin to name everything I'm thankful
for but my youth family is hitting my top
5. You all are such a blessing to me and to
Kernstown! This time of year also begins a time to
give back to others. Sometimes we take for granted
the breakfasts out at our favorite restaurant or the
extra latte we picked up at Starbucks and forget that
there are people who struggle day to day for one
meal. This year, the KUMC Youth will be adopting a
family during the holiday season. The youth will be
making a budget, shopping for items, and presenting
to a local family who just needs a little extra help.
Our schedule for Youth Group is ever-changing.
We’ve got so many activities coming up that I’m
really hoping that everyone will participate in our
planned activities. October was FANTASTIC! We
started out with Apple butter (and thanks to Alex…we
now have a new hair-gel product!) We followed apple
butter with a mini-hiking trip to Sky Meadow. It was a
BEAUTIFUL afternoon for a rather vigorous hike
followed by some devotional time. Our car wash was
rained out, but our discussion about the 10
Commandments had us thinking about how the
world has changed. Laser tag was put on hold but
we enjoyed a delicious dinner together at the church.
We finished out the month with a game night and
lock-in at the church. It was a FANTASTIC night!
Bible Challenge:
Ok youth group, let's have a little fun! In October we
talked about the Ten Commandments. Let's take it
one step further. Jesus speaks about the Ten
Commandments in the in the Gospels. Specifically,
he tells the Pharisees which 2 Commandments are
the most important. My challenge to you is this:
What were the 2 commandments?
What scripture verses tell us this story?
Why does Jesus say these are the most
important commandments and what does this
mean for how we are supposed to live our
lives?

November 16th is our first PROGRESSIVE DINNER!
A progressive dinner is where we start at one church
member’s house and move throughout the evening
to other member’s homes to eat our entire meal from
start to finish. The first house having an appetizer,
next soup/salad, next entrée, and so on and so forth.
If you would like to take part in helping with our
progressive dinner, please sign up in the narthex.
And finally, our fun facts about Velociraptors (The
Skit Guys were awesome!!) The Velociraptor was
around the size of a……TURKEY! (And we thought
dinosaurs were huge!)

Stewardship Moment
Becoming
a
Significant
Servant, Part 2:
SENIOR ANGEL TREE
Outer victories mean nothing if I
do not win the inner battle. You’d
think that chapter 18 of I Kings contained the biggest
battles of Elijah’s life. He battled the powerful king
Ahab, he battled 450 false prophets! But in chapter 19
he faces an even bigger battle, the battle within
himself. He won the battles of 18 fairly easily, yet
almost lost his life in the battle of himself. In I Kings 19
Elijah gives clear expression to the kinds of inner
battles which God’s servant will inevitability have to
face. See if you can relate to any of these feelings he
expressed.
“I want to run.” We often feel like running after a great
victory. The combination of physical and emotional
fatigue make us feel like escaping when everyone
else is celebrating. When we’re run down we want to
run away.
“I’ve had enough.” The feeling is, “I’ve reached my
limit…”
“I’m all alone.” The greatest inner battle is the battle
of loneliness. When you decide that you’re all alone
the inner battle is lost.
The inner victory for Elijah was won on 6 different
fronts. God told him: You need rest! (v.7) You must
worship! (v.8) You can tell someone! (v.9-10) You
need a fresh encounter with God! (v.11-13) You are
useful (v.15-17) You aren’t alone! (v. 18)
Let’s focus for a moment on the idea of a fresh
encounter with God. Elijah, who had always seen God
in the fire and storms, heard God this time in a gentle
whisper. You might feel desperate to hear God’s voice
right now. Keep listening! Elijah didn’t hear God the 1st
or 2nd or even 3rd time. But he was faithful to be where
God wanted him to be and eventually heard God’s still
small voice. What do you need to hear God whisper?
Try this servant’s prayer: Lord, I want to serve you for
the rest of my life. I pray that you would give to me the
wisdom to rest when it’s needed, the desire to place a
priority on worship, the courage to tell You about the
problem I face, the inner confidence that I am useful
to you and the assurance that I am never alone in
serving you. I pray that I would regularly hear you
speaking to me in fresh, new ways.
Send and Serve is
partnering with Home Instead to
sponsor another Christmas
mission project, this one for
senior adults. These "Senior
Angels" have been identified by
Winchester & Frederick County Social Services as
being below poverty level. They live a bare bones
existence and many lack the things that make life
enjoyable. Cheryl Strickland, from Home Instead,
told me a story of a past recipient who requested
toys for her cat. Her budget was so tight that she
couldn't purchase those simple items. I was
shocked and moved to help.
Starting on November 16, a special
Christmas tree will be placed in the narthex. Tags
containing the names of 50 senior adults in our
community will be displayed along with their small
"wish list."
Once gifts are purchased, please return them
to the narthex along with the identifying tag. Cheryl
will pick up those gifts and deliver them in time for

Methodist
Women
reorganized and became
one group and no circles.
The group meets on the
second Tuesday of each
month at 10:00. We have had two meetings and
have averaged 10-15 women at each meeting.
Two new members have already joined us and we
would like for more of you ladies to join us. We
have a program and a business meeting at each
meeting.
