HOPE FOR WOMEN IN RECOVERY. | TRANSITIONAL HOUSING, SUPPORTIVE SERVICES, SKILLS TRAINING
A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Along with the changing leaves, we’ve
had some changes at Hope House this
Fall. Our Employment Specialist, Lindsey
Cook, has moved on to join her fiancé
in Cincinnati. She will be missed after
5 years of wonderful work with the
women of Hope House. Lindsey had a
very positive impact on so many lives!
We welcome her replacement, Dana Babcock, who is fitting right
in because she was here doing an internship for a whole year last
year. Other changes have included lots of new faces as we welcome
5 interns who help the residents and staff in so many ways. Please
read more from Lindsey, Dana and our interns in this issue.
We are now preparing for Thanksgiving and counting our blessings
daily. We have so much to be grateful for! This year the women
of Hope House have been invited to Thanksgiving dinner at Baker
Street restaurant. What a generous act of kindness from Baker
Street! In October, I represented Hope House at an agency fair at
Harrison College where I met two faculty members who have been
kind enough to come to Hope House to share their expertise with
our residents. Thank you Lynda and Crista! Although the days of
golfing seem distant right now, it was less than 2 months ago when
we had our golf outing. Heartfelt thanks go to all of those who
played and/or sponsored because it was very successful!
“We should certainly count our blessings, but we should also
make our blessings count.” — Neal A. Maxwell
This quote sums up our feeling here at Hope House. We are so
grateful for the blessings we receive from the community and each
donation, each act of kindness is used to support our mission of
helping the women become and remain sober and self-sufficient.

NAP TAX CREDITS
The end of 2014 is approaching and this is a good time to purchase
tax credits to save on your tax return!
NAP (Neighborhood Assistance Program) is a program of the State
of Indiana, created by Indiana Code 6-3.1-9 and administered by
the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. Each
year, NAP offers $2.5 million in tax credits for distribution to 501
(c) 3 non-profit organizations across Indiana. These recipients, like
Hope House, use NAP tax credits as a fundraising tool to support our
program and services.
When a donor purchases credits from Hope House, they receive a tax
credit toward their Indiana state income tax liability valued at 50%
of the amount of their purchase. The donor receives this credit when
filing their Indiana state tax return. A $200 NAP purchase allows
you to receive a $100 credit towards your Indiana income tax PLUS
the federal tax deduction for charitable contributions. Hope House
has tax credits to sell and would love for you to contact us for more
information. Call Mary at 424-3711.

HOPE HOUSE EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST
Hope House is saying good-bye to our long-time Employment Specialist, Lindsey Cook. Lindsey has had a great impact on many of the
women who have stayed at Hope House, and we are really thankful for all the work she has done over the years. She will be missed and we
wish her nothing but the best in her next journey in life!
Here is a letter Lindsey wrote to share with you.
I wanted to take a moment to say goodbye to all the staff,
residents, and supporters of Hope House! In the 4 years I have
been involved with Hope House as the employment specialist
I’ve grown so much as a person and a professional. Taking the
employment program from it’s beginning stages and watching
it grow and become successful for our residents has been
rewarding in a way that has always kept me striving to do more
to help the women be as successful and self-sufficient as they
can. I’ve gained valuable knowledge and experience that will
stay with me always. In my time here I’ve worked with so many
wonderful women and staff and I will truly miss everyone! While
it’s bittersweet to be leaving, I’m looking forward to this new
adventure.
One of our former interns, Dana Babcock, will step into Lindsey’s role and begin working as our new Employment Specialist. We welcome
Dana! Here is a note she wrote:
My name is Dana and I am anticipating helping women obtain gainful and stable employment as an important step in their recovery
program. As part of my degree in Human Services from IPFW, I spent my senior year as an intern at Hope House learning about this
population and gaining a whole new passion for women dealing with chemical dependency. While Lindsey leaves large shoes to fill, I
am confident in this program and the services it provides to help women live successful lives in recovery. I look forward to my future
with Hope House and the women we serve.
NEW INTERNS
Over the years, we have welcomed a number of interns to Hope House. We asked our most recent interns to write a short introduction so
you can know a little bit about who they are.
Lisa
My name is Lisa Adams and I have been studying Human Services at Ivy Tech Community College. From personal experience
throughout my own family I have a deep awareness of the devastating effects of addiction. Rebuilding one’s life is a gradual
process which requires a strong support network. Hope House offer’s a safe and encouraging environment in order to aid
chemically dependent women in their pursuit of recovery. The disease of addiction touches all aspects of life. Those who are
afflicted with addiction are not responsible for having it, but once one is aware of their malady they have a responsibility for
their recovery. I hope to continue learning how to pair my personal experience with effective training in this process.

NEW INTERNS
Linda
My name is Linda Valdes and I am a student at Ivy Tech Community College.
I am enrolled in the Human Services program and hope to transfer to Indiana
University-Purdue University to pursue my bachelor’s degree in this field
next fall after completing my two-year degree in the spring. I am honored to
have the privilege of being able to work with Hope House staff and residents
while learning about the program. I am focused on providing support and
encouragement to the residents and learning their individual stories to
provide assistance to them during their journey at Hope House.
Rachel
My name is Rachel and I’m currently an intern here at Hope House through
Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. I have already received
my Associates Degree and am almost finished with my Bachelors Degree,
both in Human Services. I am also working on a double minor for Psychology
and Sociology. I haven’t had much experience working with addictions, since
my previous internships were clients with mental disorders and disabilities.
I chose disabilities initially because I have a daughter who is 7 years in
remission from Ewings Sarcoma, a bone cancer. She was later diagnosed
with mild cerebral palsy and generalized anxiety disorder. Due to being a
single mom, and experiencing the struggles with my daughter, I have a fairly
extensive knowledge of community resources. I have already learned a lot
in my short time here and I love talking to everyone, learning their stories.
During my time here I look forward to working with each resident and helping
to aid in the progress of her recovery.
Allissa
My name is Allissa Peterson and I am in the Physical Therapist Assistant
program at the University of Saint Francis. For one of my classes I have to do
a service learning project and volunteer somewhere for a total of 24 hours.
They encouraged us in class to volunteer somewhere out of our comfort zone
and so I decided to volunteer at the Hope House to give myself experience in
an atmosphere that I have never experienced before. After being here every
Thursday for a few weeks, I have a better understanding about the addictions
people really go through. Since I am a certified massage therapist, a few
times I was here I put on free neck and shoulder massages for 10-15 minutes
for each lady. I feel and hope that the 10-15 minutes let the ladies relax and
feel a sense of relief from their day and struggles they may have been going
through at the time. I’m so glad I got the chance to experience the Hope
House and Martha’s Place and being able to talk to most of the ladies here; it
has really opened my eyes to a greater understanding.
