DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
REFLECTION…………BUILDINGS, SCAFFOLDS & COSMETICS !
This weekend the Church celebrates the dedication of the Lateran Basilica. The Basilica was built on the
Lateran Hill in Rome in 324 by Constantine and its dedication has been celebrated on this date since the
12th Century as “the mother and head of all the Churches in the City and in the World.”
It’s a symbol of the unity of faith that we share with believers all around the world and a reminder that with
all our differences of culture, age and points of view, we share one faith in Jesus and one Spirit of Love
breathes through us all.
Old buildings need to be repaired, maintained and sometimes even re-built. In much the same way, our
living, breathing faith requires similar repair, maintenance and re-building.
St Augustine once noted that “not to go forward is to go back!” In other words, our tradition, while it has lots
of memories, practices and teachings that have come to us from the past, is a tradition of living people who
believe in a living God.
Now living things are born, grow, change, die and are born again as something new. This pattern is built
into the very fabric of our lives. Each one of us is at our own unique point of this cycle of life. So too is each
community.
The Church in our time is experiencing a period of some disruption and turmoil along with renewed hope.
It’s as if there is scaffolding around us and bits are being chipped off us, some bits are being replaced and
some restored to their pristine state. There are many people on the scaffolding, debating which bits of the
Church are in need of repair, replacement or retention.
The picture isn’t always pretty. The scaffolding is hardly a work of art, nor are the debates, but they are
essential in order for the work to be accomplished.
In the midst of this repair and restoration, it is possible that we devote all our attention to the scaffolding and
debating, and how ugly it appears, thus missing the purpose of it all.
It’s also possible that we focus on our little bit of the Church that needs re-working, or the bit we are most
concerned about, and we forget to look at the whole Body of Christ, and again we’ll be disappointed and
our repair work will come up short, and possibly divide rather than unite.
The celebration of the Lateran Basilica is a timely invitation for us to take in this big picture, the picture of a
community of faith that stretches back to the time of Jesus, that includes people of all nations, that will give
birth to many generations into the future. Our personal restoration work, attentive to personal and present
concerns, will only be effective if we include the wider Church’s life and mission in our reflection and action.
This past week, we have been alerting couples being married at Holy Name of Mary in the coming two
months to the scaffolding that will affect the appearance of the Church at the time of their wedding. Some of
them were just delighted to be still getting married here. Some of them were disappointed but gracious and
grateful for the financial concessions the parish offered them. Some revealed how central the cosmetic
aspect of the wedding day is to them. They each had lessons to teach us.
Today, image often replaces substance and this perspective can leave no room for the deeper riches that
life and faith have to offer. Our society’s obsession with ego and image does not cope well with the scaffolding that our life sometimes requires.
As the whole Church continues with her own restoration, we’ll be stuck for a while yet with plenty of scaffolding and debate while the Body of Christ is made new again.

For November we have a Memorial
Tree set up at school where we put
the names of those who have died
and for whom we wish to pray. It
reminds us of the family of believers who have gone ahead and
prepared the way before us.
We pray for the whole Church during this period between sessions of
the Synod on the Family. We pray
that the conversations around the
Church will be fruitful and liberating
in the lives of all those people who
look to the Church for leadership
and compassion.

OUR PARISH PRAYER
Loving God,
you are the home for our hearts’ deepest longings.
We find our way as families and as individuals only in you, through our brother Jesus,
encouraged by the breath of your Spirit.
We thank you for all the blessings we enjoy in our parish family. May we continue to share our gifts of life
and love with glad and generous hearts.
May our world be somehow more alive because we have passed this way.
May Mary our parish patron continue to inspire us as we give new birth to your Word in our turn.
We make our prayer in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
