Firstly good luck to our Year 11-13 students as they
head off to their external exams next week.
Hopefully they feel comfortable and confident about
their prospects over the next few weeks and we wish
them all the best. It is interesting to note that
NZQA have given themselves three years to develop
a system so that external exams can be accessed at
any time of the year. This would certainly change
the playfield for assessment and provide a much
more flexible approach to external assessment and
potentially extend the year for all students through
into December. This year’s Year 11 might be the
last group to see out external exams in the current
format as they leave as Year 13s in a few years time.
There are certainly many factors to be ironed out
first and we are certainly taking a, “we’ll wait and
see” position.
Tomorrow we will also farewell our Year 13
students from their formal education in a full school
assembly at 2.20pm in the afternoon. Be prepared
for this assembly to a bit different from the rest, as
the Year 13 are hosting it. This group of students
have been a pleasure to work alongside this year and
will leave as excellent ambassadors for the school.
Their work ethic, sense of fun and general maturity
has set a wonderful benchmark for future years to
emulate. We wish them all the best in their future
adventures.
Last week we completed the formal interviews for
the Deputy Principal – Secondary
position. This certainly was not an easy
process and the decision was not made
lightly. Congratulations to Iain
Thompson for being awarded the
position and we look forward to him
joining the team in 2015. Iain comes to
us form Rangiora High School, with a
solid background in departmental and
curriculum leadership and clear strengths
in the Sciences. He will bring some
balance to what we currently have within
the Leadership Team and we look
forward to the contribution he will make
next year.
With Board of Trustees mid-term
election process underway, we have two
parent representative positions to fill on our Board.
Sadly Linda Allan and Sharon Earl will be stepping
down and have not indicated that they will stand
again, unless someone can twist their arm. Both have
done a fabulous job on the Board and both will be
missed. The Board of Trustees is an integral part of
what makes the school run and the support and
leadership they supply helps ensure we maintain a
focus on what we are here for, the education of our
children. The ability of the Board of Trustees to
work collaboratively with the Principal on matters
around governance sets the tone for the school and
allows the more day to day management decisions to
be made from a clear vision and strategic view point.
I would like all to consider putting their name
forward as a parent representative on the Board of
Trustees. The term is for three years and this
generally goes very quickly, but ensures those elected
have enough time to gain an understanding of
school governance and allow them to feel they are
contributing to the school in a positive and
constructive manner. Don’t leave these elections to
chance. It is important that we have an election so
all get the opportunity to contribute to who fills the
two position for the next term.

Board of Trustees Election Nominations are invited for the
election of two parent representatives to the board of trustees.
A nomination form and a notice calling for nominations will be
posted to all eligible voters. Additional nomination forms can be
obtained from the school office. Nominations close at noon
7th November 2014 and may be accompanied by a signed
candidate’s statement. The voting roll is open for inspection at
the school and can be viewed during normal school hours.
There will also be a list of candidate’s names, as they come to
hand, for inspection at the school. Voting closes at noon on 21st
November 2014.

HAWARDEN-WAIKARI RED CROSS A very big thank you
to all the people who helped for our annual Raffle and Stall – those

WAIKARI HEALTH CENTRE
New GP – Dr Juan Orive Siviter has unfortunately returned to
Spain due to a sudden, serious family illness.
While we are pursuing other options we are being assisted by
Dr Des Slassor and Dr Rob Milnes for the
next couple of months. Rob worked here as
a locum last year. Dr Racle continues to
work here one day a week.
After Hours There is always a doctor or
rural nurse specialist on call - please phone
the Health Centre on the number below during normal business
hours and after hours and you will be directed to the appropriate
assistance. The After Hours calls are managed by HML
(Homecare Medical Ltd) who will assess your needs and advise
your best course of action.
The Dermoscopy Centre Dr Julia Racle: Next clinic at Waikari
is 4th December, please phone the Health Centre for an
appointment for a skin check.
Repeat Prescriptions The Health Centre requires 48 hours
notice to do repeat phone prescriptions if they have been
authorized by the GP. Please keep track of how many tablets you
have left.
B4 School Checks if you have a child who has turned 4 and has
not had one of these free checks please contact us.
Free Cervical Smear Clinic One of our nurses has completed
the “smear takers” course and will be holding a clinic Wednesday
3rd December, during the morning. It is a requirement of the
course that she completes a number of smears under supervision,
which Dr Racle will do on this day. Please phone to book an
appointment.
Podiatry Clinic 3rd December – Julia Home will be running a
clinic during the morning. We have funding from Manchester
Unity Welfare Trust Board to fund podiatry for people over 65
years.
