NRCS Announces Deadline for EQIP Funding in Kansas
Natural Resources
Conservation Service
(NRCS) State Conservationist Eric B. Banks, announced an application
evaluation cutoff date of
November 21, 2014, for
the Environmental Quality Incentives
Program (EQIP).
EQIP is a voluntary
program that provides
financial and technical
assistance to agricultural producers through
contracts up to a maxi-
mum term of ten years
in length. These contracts provide financial
assistance to help plan
and implement conservation practices that
address natural resource
concerns and provide
opportunities to improve soil, water, plant,
animal, air, and related
resources on agricultural
land, such as cropland,
rangeland, non-industrial private forestland, as
well as for animal feeding operations.
“This is a very popular program in Kansas,
and I know fall is a busy
season. The NRCS wants
everyone to have the
opportunity to develop
a conservation plan and
submit an application in
time,” said Banks.
Applications are accepted year round, but
those received by November 21, 2014, will be
evaluated for fiscal year
2015 funding. Applicants
must meet certain eligibility requirements.
“EQIP also helps address the unique circumstances of socially
disadvantaged, veteran,
limited resource, and
beginning farmers and
ranchers, who have
natural resource concerns that need to be
addressed on their land,”

Hills begins autumn training classes for new Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers
Nov. 6 and will utilize a
blended training curriculum. This five-week curriculum includes a scheduled
weekly in-person class and
an online session at the
volunteer’s leisure. CASA volunteers
uncover facts for the court
in child abuse and neglect
cases, develop a special
relationship with the child
and family and make
recommendations to the
court in the child’s best
interests. CASA is accepting applications for volunteers to
join the CASA team and
embark on a journey to advocate for the best interests
of abused and neglected
children in our community. Applicants must be
21 years or older, be able
to commit to two years
with the program and care
about the well-being of

‘Soda Fountains of Kansas’
The Gridley Branch of
Coffey County Library
will host “Soda Fountains
of Kansas” at 7 p.m.,
Monday, November 10th
at the library, 512 Main
Street. The presentation
and discussion will be led
by Kansas Humanities
Speaker Cindy Higgins.
During the glory days
of the soda fountain,
Kansas pharmacists cre-
ated tonics and curatives
that eventually evolved
into refreshments like the
Brown Cow, the Mudslide, and the Egg Cream.
Government regulations,
World War I luxury
taxes, and bottled soda
pop played a role in these
ice cream concoctions
that became a profitable
sideline business. The
presentation will explore
soda fountains in Kansas
today and the revival of
soda fountains throughout the nation.
Cindy Higgins is a
journalist and Kansas
historian. She joined the
Speakers Bureau in 2012
and is very experienced
in the consumption of
soda pop and decadent
ice cream desserts.

influenced by Africanism, Japonism, cubism
and abstraction and
could be glorious riots of
color and stylized forms
that ran the gamut from
elephant and giraffes to
florals and geometrics.
This was the best
work created at Boch
Freres, but the piece in
today's question can
not be attributed to this
great man and important
20th century ceramist.

box used in this location.
We also think it might
have originally designed
to be a sweetmeat or
candy box that was kept
for guests, perhaps upon
the sideboard or atop a
table in the parlor.
In any event, collectors tend to love the
rich cobalt blue and the
elegant gilding and metal
work, but it is still not an
example of what many
would consider Boch
Freres' most important
and influential work.
Yes, it is attractive, but it
does not rise to the level
of being "art," which is
attained by many pieces
executed by Charles Catteau himself. For insurance purposes, this piece
should be valued in the
$250 to $300 range.

The Exiles’ Picnic was held September 26, 1912, in the City Park of Kansas City, Kansas. Over 300 former
residents of Emporia gathered there on a Saturday afternoon, the seventh annual reunion of ex-Emporians.
Why had so many former residents of our city already moved to Kansas City in 1912? Why do so many
former residents of our city move to the Kansas City area these days? Is there still an Exiles’ Picnic for those
folks? Does the lure of the large city include better shopping, better job opportunities, better cultural or
sports activities? Are these the same things that lured ex-Emporians back in 1912?
Hartford’s population prior to the Civil War was several hundred. With a call by Northern forces for
volunteers, so many volunteered that the male population of Hartford was reduced to three: Hiram Hoover,
E.C. Bassett, and a crippled man. These three men tried to help the women on the farms with their chores
and the farm work they could not handle. Periodically, wounded soldiers would return home to recuperate, and others serving along the Kansas-Missouri border would come home on furlough. Nevertheless, for
Hartford as in other communities in Lyon (Breckinridge) County and across the nation, the war provided a
great hardship not just for those fighting, but also for those back home.

as well as sourdough recipes, the flavors develop in
the refrigerator. The longer
the dough sits, the tangier
the crust will be.
Once you get a basic
recipe down, you can
experiment with different
flours, for example, adding
half white flour and half
whole wheat. You can also
add chopped herbs to the
dough or grated cheese.
Before baking, your
oven needs to be hot and
preheated to around 450
to 475 degrees. Reid likes
putting a pizza stone in
her oven as it preheats for
around 30 minutes. She
recommends rolling out
the dough on parchment
paper. From there you can
transfer the dough and
parchment to the pizza
stone to blind-bake the
crust before adding sauce,
cheese and toppings.
For topping inspiration,
look no further than a
Milwaukee pizzeria. Blaze
Pizza, a national chain that
opened its second location
in Bayshore Town Center
in early October, has more
than 40 different toppings.
Diners enjoy customizable pizzas in a fast-casual
dining environment with
choices that include ricotta
cheese, crumbled meatballs, artichoke hearts and
roasted zucchini.
“People like choosing
different toppings because
they can come in and mix
things up each time they
visit us,” said John Walch,
owner of both Milwaukee
franchises.
Blaze Pizza also has
eight signature pizzas diners can choose from.
One of the most popular is the Green Stripe, a
chicken, roasted red pepper, chopped garlic, mozzarella and arugula pizza
with a pesto drizzle.
Unlike a homemade
pizza that takes about 15 to
20 minutes to bake in the
oven, Blaze Pizza cooks its
pies for only 180 seconds
(the wood-fired oven can
get up to 800 degrees!).
For toppings that are
really “out there,” look to
Madison, Wis.-based Ian’s
Pizza, with two Milwaukee
locations. Ian’s infamous
mac and cheese pizza has
been its No. 1 seller since
the first location opened in
2001.
Other fun combinations
include penne alfresco,
smokey the bandit (a barbecue chicken pizza with
bacon, ranch and cheddar
cheese) and quesadilla
pizza with spicy chicken or
chorizo sausage and pico
de gallo.
“The question we get
asked most often is if we
have any normal pizza,”
said Ryan Donovan, the
general manager of Milwaukee’s North Ave. location. “We will try anything
with pizza.”
For Reid, pizza is her
passion as well as her day
job. “I pretty much make
pizza every week at home,”
she said. “Lately I’ve been
putting herbs and ricotta
cheese on top of the crust
with a drizzle of olive oil.
When I make it myself, I
tend to do things a little
differently.”
PIZZA SECRETS
All you need to make
pizza from scratch is time,
a little patience and these
helpful tips:
1. To prevent your pizza
from getting soggy in the
middle, make sure your
oven (and pizza stone,
if using) is thoroughly
preheated to at least 450
degrees.
2. Other things that can
cause a soggy pizza are too
much sauce and cheese.
3. For a cracker-thin
crust, add cornmeal to the
dough batter.
4. If your dough has
been sitting in the refrigerator, let it sit on the counter
to warm up as you preheat
your oven and prepare
your toppings.
5. If your pizza crust
keeps bouncing back during the rolling process, roll
it out halfway and then
let the dough relax for 20
minutes before rolling it
out completely.
6. To prevent a dense
and tough pizza crust, oil
your hands to stretch and
push out the dough.
