Put A Little Library in Your Life—Gifts and Memorials
Dear Reader—
“‘Tis the season!” for
wish lists and gift lists, for
celebrating and merrymaking. Like many of our
friends and neighbors at
this time of year, here at the
library we’re not only reading about holidays, we’re
decorating for them—a
tree in our foyer and lights
on the roof—and thinking
of loved ones as we cart
shopping bags and make
favorite foods to share.
As you’re making merry
and bright and remembering those you love, we
hope you also think of
brightening your library’s
shelves. Not only are gifts
tax deductible, they’re a
personal connection to this
community institution.
All year long people and
groups in our community
seek to improve our lives,
and the holidays offer all
of us a way to honor them
with stories and resources
by giving a gift to the Emporia Public Library.
Your book club could
purchase a favorite read,
or you could take a family
favorite and purchase it in
large print or audio. You
could support your favorite
library program, such as
the Brown Bag concerts,
Homebound services,
or Interlibrary loans, or
simply find a new author
to add to the shelves. These
gifts can be large or small,
and personalized for a
special friend or family
member: a college advisor,
a doctor, or close neighbor.
At the same time, giving
back to the library is a way
to pay it forward for others.
Gifts like these enhance the
quality of our collection
and offer more of what the
library exists to provide:
the essential information
and materials that help us
navigate the many junctures in our world.
We’ve always liked the
lights and decorations, the
music and the memories;
but it’s our resources of
people, books, and community support that keep
the spirit of the season all
year round. Thank you for
remembering your library
in the midst of this season
of festivities.
We would like to thank each and
everyone of you that made our
4th year a HUGE success!
We look forward to seeing and working with you in 2015!

Deck the halls with tons of cookies
By Daniel Neman
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
It's the most wonderful
time of the year, or so they
say. But why is this so?
Is it the kids Jingle Belling? Is it everyone telling
you "Be of good cheer"?
Does that even happen
anymore?
No, no and not in my
experience. What makes
the holidays so effervescently joyous are: cookies.
Think about it.
Throughout the month
of December, cookies
are everywhere. They are
unavoidable. They cascade
down on us like sweet,
crispy, tasty snowflakes.
And aren't we all truly
dreaming of a sugar-coat-
ed Christmas?
This is the month for
baking cookies, bringing
them to some friends'
houses, and then eating
the cookies they baked for
you. It is the month when,
if you play your cards
right, fresh-baked cookies
might be available at your
office three days out of
five. And let us not forget
that cookies are also good
to give as gifts.
Who doesn't enjoy a
good cookie? They must
be the most-beloved food
item in the country. They
are such an important
part of our culture that
one children's TV character is famous just because
he likes to eat them. And
this time of year, they are
everywhere.
For the holidays this
year, I baked seven types
of cookies because, you
know, once you start
baking cookies you never
want to stop. Besides, the
oven was already preheated.
For each batch I used
butter and only butter,
because I like my friends.

chocolate chip cookies are

Cookie Credits giving Girl Scouts
an adventure of a lifetime
“I am going to Europe
this summer and many
of my Dad’s friends are
asking how he can afford to send me. My dad
always teases that he has
to starve the family and
work 20 hour days but
I actually have earned
my way through Girl
Scouts”, stated Emily
Cheever. Cheever is an
8th grader at Emporia
Middle School who has
been an active Girl Scout
for nine years. She has
been selling cookies and
“banking” her cookie
credits to pay for her trip
to Europe. Two travel
troops consisting of more
than 30 Girl Scouts will
be traveling to Europe
this summer because
they have been Girl Scout
Cookie Professionals for
many years.
Selling cookies teaches
Girl Scouts how to goal
set, make decisions, manage money, use people
skills and apply business
ethics, which are all essential to leadership and
success in life. Not only
do the Girl Scout Cookie
Professionals gain these
essential life skills, they
also earn Cookie Credits
that can be applied to
programs such as the
annual Flint Hills Mall
Madness Overnight Party
or the Emporia Arts Center Holiday Craft Workshop as well as travel
and purchases from the
Scout Shops. Real joy is
seen when a girl whose
parents can not afford
to purchase a uniform,
which is not a requirement to be in Girl Scouts,
uses her cookie credits so
she can represent the Girl
Scouts through her dress.
In these instances girls
have truly learned a lesson in financial literacy.
There are many ways
girls can participate in
Girl Scouts such as being
part of a travel troop,
joining a traditional
troop, being in an after
school club or becoming an individual girl
member. The different
options are available to
allow flexibility for the

Girl Scout families. A
travel troop may meet
once a month to plan
fund raising activities, a
traditional troop usually
meets weekly, an after
school club is available
at many schools and an
individual girl member
attends events, camp,
and other activities but
does not have the commitment of attending
meetings. No matter how
a girl chooses to participate, cookie sale time is
when everybody seems
to want to get involved.
“Cookie sale time is more
than a cute face going
door to door asking for
contributions, it is about
me interacting with my
community members,
getting the experience of
running my own business and paying my own
way to camp and other
events I want to attend”,
stated Kimmy Pyle, an
individual girl member
who attends Northern
Heights High School.
Cookie sales begin
January 31 in the Girl
Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council and continue through March 8.
Girls who want to become Girl Scout Cookie
Professionals and begin

Lyon County Historical Facts
Provided by Lyon County Historical Society
The Southern Lyon County Sunday School Convention was held for many
years in a grove south of the Twin Mound Church along the banks of Eagle
Creek. Seats were constructed of planks loaned by a lumber company, and
an organ was loaded in a rack wagon as a platform to aid in singing. A basket
dinner was enjoyed by all at noon. In the afternoon a special program featured special presentations by each church, along with sermonettes by each
pastor. Churches participating were Olpe Methodist, Olpe Ebenezer Evangelical, Hartford Methodist, Hartford Christian, Verdigris Valley Church of the
Brethren, Lena Valley Methodist, and Twin Mound Friends.
With Theodore Roosevelt traveling the country for two weeks solid, his
Presidential campaign realized the need of a laundry. Roosevelt’s nephew
George Emlen Roosevelt had his private secretary telegraph Emporia from
Hastings, Nebraska, asking that arrangements be made to handle the laundry
of the group when they arrived in Emporia Saturday night, September 12,
1912. Every laundry in town had closed, but the New Process Laundry took
the job. A batch of clothes arrived on train No. 7 at 7:00 and was completed
pretty promptly. Another bundle arrived later in the evening and was finished
by 3:00 on Sunday morning. The total bill amounted to $42.30.

this very well may be it.
Chocolate chip cookies require a tightrope-walking
balance of sweet and salt,
of chocolate and butter
and flour. It has to have
the right amount of chips,
the right amount of nuts.
And the best ones use a
combination of granulated
and brown sugars for the
proper amount of sweetness.

years trying to devise

Cherry-Chocolate
Chip Oatmeal Cookies _ Once you have the
perfect chocolate chip
recipe, every cook needs
an equally iconic oatmeal
cookie. This version is a
good bet and deserves a
place in any home cook's
repertoire.
It comes from the same
source as the chocolate
chip cookie recipe ("The
Art & Soul of Baking," by
Cindy Mushet, a musthave for any baker), and
it is made in much the
same way. But this cookie
has oatmeal in it, plus
baking powder for a little
extra rise. Plus, of course,
chocolate chips and dried
cherries, making it that
much more fun to eat.

Dear Helaine and Joe:
I read your column
in the newspaper every
weekend and I would like
to know more about the
two pictures I own. They
were inherited from my
parents, and I believe
they may have inherited
them as well. I am told
they are silk thread pieces of art, and the best I
can find is that they may
be Neyret Freres silks.
I would like to know
anything you can tell me
about these two pieces. Is
the name of the manufacturer correct? What
is their approximate age
and value? They are 10 {
by 6 } inches.
Thank you,
P. K.
Dear P. K.,
Many collectors
might refer to pictures
such as this as being
"Stevengraphs," which
is a name given to a
woven silk picture that
was originally done by
Thomas Stevens, who
was a weaver in Coventry, England. Sometime in the early 1860s,
Stevens began adapting
the Jacquard loom, a
type of automated loom
invented by Joseph Marie
Jacquard (1752-1834) to
weave colorful pictures,
and these items became

known as Stevengraphs.
Reportedly, Stevens
began with four different designs, but by the
1880s that number grew
to more than 900. Many
of these were produced
to be used as bookmarks
and souvenir ribbons,
but they were also used
for greeting cards (and a
bit later for postcards).
It should be mentioned that other Coventry-based factories
made these woven silk
pictures as well, including Welch and Lambert
and W.H. Grant. In
France the big name
manufacturer was Neyret Freres, which was
located in St. Etienne.
The city has a current
population of approximately 175,000 and is
located about 30 miles
southwest of Lyon.
The company traces
its origins back to a ribbon factory founded in
1825 by M. Antoine Bizaillon. When Bizaillon
decided to retire, he had
only small children and
this prompted him to
sell his small enterprise
to a coworker, JeanBaptiste Neyret (18251889). Neyret decided
to enlarge his business
by making ribbons for
official decorations,
trademarked ribbons to
be used by manufacturers on their clothing
and eventually images
originally created by
artists such as Paul
Tavernier, Jacques-Louis
David, Rosa Bonheur,
Jean Leon Gerome and
many others.
Closely associated
with the Neyret production is the work of
a Paris company called
E. Deffrene, which
produced a number of
woven silk postcards
showing buildings
burning due to German bombing in World
War I and patriotic
portraits including King
George V of England,
Lord Kitchener and
Clemenceau. These were
produced between 1914
and 1918 and it is not
clear (at least to us) the
role that Neyret Freres
played in their production _ if any.
Neyret pieces are
sometimes signed
"NF" or one reference
reported "NFF" in the
lower right corner. The
production of these
"artistic" pictures ceased
in 1970, and we believe
the images in today's
question were probably made sometime
between the end of the
first and the beginning
of the Second World
War (between 1918 and
1939).
Since these pictures
of 18th century French
style scenes are very
Victorian in feeling,
they are not very attractive to current buyers.
Sadly, their insurance
replacement value is
rather low and these
framed examples should
be valued between $100
and $125 for the two
pieces.
