Susan Barrett recently donated to the Museum two sections of the original National Bank counter. The counter was made by A. H. Andrews & Company in Chicago about 1882. Alfred H. Andrews was a native of Connecticut who moved to Chicago in 1857. He founded his furniture company in 1865 and by the end of that decade had 70 men working for him making $150,000 worth of furniture each year. By the 1880s Andrews’ had grown to be the largest firm in the city and employed 500 workmen making $600,000 worth of furniture each year. The bank counter must be a fair representation of the Andrews Company work. It is made of cherry and mahogany. The cut glass teller’s window that went with the counter is currently in possession of a private collector, but it is hoped the Museum may one day obtain the piece to complete the set. It is presumed that the counter was removed sometime shortly after the bank closed its doors in 1928. Another interesting find in the basement of the Nation Bank building, was four Burroughs adding machines. Three of the machines are on movable stands; two of those machines are electric. Two of the adding machines have been identified as having belonged to the Exchange National Bank where the Citizens State Bank is currently in Cottonwood Falls. The one machine I have research so far appears to have been made prior to 1930. William Seward Burroughs (1855-1898) had a great idea for a mechanical adding machine. Joseph Boyer who was president of the American Arithmometer Company told of how Burroughs worked so hard on developing an adding machine and finally came up with a model he was pleased with. He had a lot of fifty machines made and he could make them “perform mathematical wonders.” Unfortunately the average operator didn’t do quite so well with them. Burroughs ended up tossing his fifty machines out of the second floor window one by one and starting over again with a new model. Tuesday October 7, 2014 FLINT HILLS SHOPPER Page 9 4-H News Rinker 4-H Club by Briana Becker, Club Reporter The September meeting of Rinker 4-H was held September 15 at the Union Schoolhouse. There were seven members, two leaders, and seven parents present. Roll call was answered by “what is your favorite non-PE school subject?” The club received a note from the 4-H Journal notifying families that August was the last time it would be published. Members decided on holding a school house work day to touch-up paint and to clean-up the yard on Sun., October 5 at 12:30 p.m. This will include pizza for members and families who participate. Later that night, 7 p.m., we will attend the countywide 4-H Sunday at the Bowyer Building. The following members were elected as our 2014-15 officers: President Wyatt Bolen; Vice-President Luke Ikerd; Secretary Isaac Cushenbery; Co-Treasurer Karalyn & Kaitlyn Karjala; Reporter Briana Becker; CoParliamentarian Lindsay & Trade Torrens; Historian Trey Simons; and Co-Song Leaders Matthew Franklin & Jacob Wheeler. Members decided to leave the position of Recreation Leader open to continue with how we currently have it. The family that brings refreshments is in charge of that month’s recreation. Wyatt Bolen and Luke Ikerd, current Lyon County Ambassadors, informed us about the Ambassador Program and explained that applications are due by October 1. Theresa McFarland, Club Leader, presented gift certificates to the movie theater to members that turned in completed record books this year. The members that received these certificates were: Luke Ikerd (also received a special gift for being the first to turn it in), Wyatt Bolen, Isaac Cushenbery, and Megan Hilbish (not present). Members were told how special they are to Rinker. We were reminded of everything we learned this year and all the hard work we accomplished together as a club, as well as, individually. We work together and complement each other like Lifesavers candy, which we all received. Our next meeting will not be held the usual day and time, as we decided to tour Roga Pumpkin Patch. The Halloween Committee will finalize the details. The plan is on Saturday, October 25, to meet at the Pumpkin patch, then go to the home of Richard and Briana Becker for a cookout and meeting. It was voted on that the club pay the way for members to go through the Neosho Rapids Haunted House afterwards. We sang “Happy Birthday” to those present with September birthdays: Deb and Luke Ikerd and Wyatt Bolen. Briana Becker moved to adjourn the meeting and it was seconded by Lindsey Torrens. Root beer floats were enjoyed after the lengthy meeting. Spirit animals The series of mixed media drawing ‘In the Spirit’ began during Hilary Lorenz’s artist residency at Outpost Studios in Matfield Green. Says Hilary: “Driving from New York along with my two Labradors, when I arrived in Matfield Green I felt as if I had driven into a giant secret bubble where blue sky meets endless green hills. For as far as I could see it was only green and blue, no trees, no buildings, nothing to interrupt this endless vision. It was magical.” Hilary arrived “armed with the gift of antique Italian patterned papers, given to me by a friend whose mother collected them prior to 1950, piles of printed paper and a multitude of watercolor.” She set her work area up on big wooden porch table, surrounded by windows and with white Christmas lights dangling from overhead and began to work. “As I watched the deer cross the field at night, something unexpected crept into my drawings, animals. These were not ordinary animals, they were ‘spirit animals’ I carved in linoleum blocks. I would make several prints of each linoleum block, cut the animal out from the paper and make up small stories as I incorporated them into the watercolor drawings.” Invasive species April Flanders in her show ‘Advance’ presents two bodies of work. One responds specifically to the prairie ecology as it relates to invasive species. The other is a continuation of work she began last spring and speaks to invasive species on a global level. Most of April’s prints employ monotype. Like Hilary Lorenz a classically trained printmaker, Flanders cannot escape the lure of ink on paper to create compelling rhythms with color, texture and repetition. “However,” April says, “I am more completely seduced when I challenge the boundaries of traditional printmaking by cutting, folding and sculpting my prints so they take a shape beyond the frame.” In much of her current work April addresses the issue of native versus invasive botanical species. “We do not fully understand the ramifications of globalization. One of its consequences is the uninhibited exchange of plant and animal organisms across global boundaries. The result is often the creation of an invasive species. In my work, I address the breadth of the invasive species problem in North America. I began by collecting invasive plants around my home. I used these plants to print brightly colored sheets of printmaking paper using a layered monotype process.” April then cataloged 76 animal species invasive to North America then cut out images of these animals from her printed invasive plant papers. With the work on show in The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs she ponders the implications of globalization. Culver’s dog was bitten by Charlie Squire’s dog about two weeks ago. It has been locked up in order to see if it is really mad. Yesterday it began drinking water and kept it up all day. This morning Policeman Randolph shot the animal. It is said that there are several other dogs in the same shape. It will be well for everyone to keep a close watch on their dogs. - Prohibition – On complaint sworn to by S,J. Dryden, the places of Martin Cottenmyer, Wm. O’Mara, Joe Hoagland, Dan Ingram, Ben Wheldon and Richard Martin were raided Saturday afternoon, but nothing was found except at Hoagland’s. There, about a half-dozen bottles of beer were found in the refrigerator. Hoagland said they were for the private use of his wife. All the men gave bond. FLINT HILLS SHOPPER Tuesday October 7, 2014 Fall Prescribed Fire and Bison Bring Changes to the Preserve Autumn is a great time to visit the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Cooler temperatures, crisp clear skies, and beautiful autumn colors in the prairie offer a welcome change from summer. Autumn is also the time to see tallgrass prairie grasses reach towering heights of six feet along the trails in the bottomland prairie. The change in seasons also brings about changes in visitor activities and land management. The National Park Service Midwest Archeological Center is coordinating with preserve staff to conduct archeological surveys in an effort to identify some important features and sensitive areas on the preserve. To accommodate the survey, the preserve is planning to conduct a prescribed burn this fall to remove residual vegetation and make it easier to conduct the survey. Weather conditions must be optimal before a prescribed burn can occur. Due to the unpredictable nature of Kansas weather, there is typically little advanced notice leading up to a prescribed burn. Some trails and areas may be closed during prescribed fire operations (on short notice). Visitors who are hiking may have their plans interrupted as a result of the burn activity, but this typically does not last more than a day. For safety, visitors are asked to not cross fire lines or venture beyond barricades and signs. The preserve is also planning to augment the bison herd in October with additional animals from Wind Cave National Park. These new animals will ensure a healthy and stable herd over the long-term. “We look forward to working with our partners to learn more about historic resources and build our bison herd. October is going to be a busy month.” said Kristen Hase, Chief of Natural Resources. Fall visitor activities include the new exhibits in the Visitor Center, the newly opened barn, and seasonal programs. While the Visitor Center and historic buildings will be closed for the fall and winter holidays, the 40plus miles of trails on the preserve will remain open. Land management activities can impact visitor access to certain areas of the preserve, however, those impacts are expected to be temporary and short-term. All visitors should check with the Visitor Center staff when planning a visit. Historic buildings (that are currently open) and the Visitor Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please call the rangers at 620-273-8494 for daily updates, check the website at www.nps.gov/tapr , or check out the Facebook page for Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is located two miles north of Strong City on Kansas State Highway 177 (the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway) and is a unique public/private partnership between the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy. When the wind came up, housewives wanted their clean clothes taken in before the dust settled on them. Fowler remembered the sun appear- ing indistinct with the dust blowing often as late as midnight. Driving at night was often similar to driving in a fog. Fowler particularly remembered April 10, 1935, as his future bride was arriving on the train that day before their wedding. He couldn’t see the sun at all that day, and when he met her at the depot, the dust reminded him of fog. Harry Fowler said that the only thing that saved farmers during the “dirty thirties” was the Agriculture Adjustment Act. He had had two brothers and lots of neighbors who were being closed out because they couldn’t pay their debts. The AAA was popular because it gave farmers a little cash. The Federal Land Bank picked up mortgages on farms, extended title payments, and gave farmers more time to pay out their debts. In future years, some of these farmers prospered, but if it were not for the AAA, they would have lost their farms. Page 16 FLINT HILLS SHOPPER Tuesday October 7, 2014 Treasures: China case clock has a modest value Dear Helaine and Joe: The photo shows a clock that my late mother had in her family for an unknown number of years. It is 10 { inches tall, 8 { inches wide and is in excellent condition with no cracks or broken corners. On the back of the clock there is a marking that looks like it says "TM" inside a crown, and "1755 Bonn," and below that "La Barque." Can you tell me the clock's history and value? Thank you, K. M. Dear K. M.: Many collectors refer to these as "china case clocks," and while some can be quite valuable, this one has a more modest value. The case of this piece was manufactured by the Steingutfabrik Franz Anton Mehlem _ or the earthenware factory of Franz Anton Mehlem, which was located in the city of Bonn, Germany. Many records we found discussing these clock cases called them porcelain, but they are not. They are pottery, or as the name of the company says, "earthenware." Despite the 1755 date in the mark, the company was founded in 1836 by Franz Anton Mehlem. Over the years, the company made a variety of household, decorative and utilitarian items, mainly from earthenware but also from porcelain. From 1887 until 1903, they manufactured reproductions of Hochst figures. Hochst was an early and prestigious German porcelain manufacturer (1746-1840) that sold their molds when they closed. These eventually ended up in the hands of Franz Anton Mehlem. In addition, Mehlem became famous for their decorative pieces, which included the clock cases they manufactured from the 1890s (approximately) to the 1920s. Mehlem closed in 1920, but Villeroy and Boch bought them and operated the factory until 1931. But Mehlem only made the case; who made the clock? K. M. did not give us any information about that, but in many if not most instances, the clock works were manufactured by the Ansonia Clock Company of Anso- nia, Conn., which began making clocks in 1864. They moved their clock making operations to Brooklyn, New York City, in 1878 and made clocks there until 1929. Occasionally, the clock used in a china case was made by the New Haven Clock Company, of New Haven, Conn., but the vast majority of all the clocks in china cases we have seen during our long careers have been made by Ansonia. More important is the point that the clock and the case did not start out life together, and it is likely that Ansonia bought the case from Mehlem (Royal Bonn), had it shipped to the United States, fitted it with its clock mechanism and then had the finished clock retailed. K. M. mentions the phrase "La Barque" as being part of the mark found on the back of her clock's case. This is the style name of the clock and Mehlem clocks can be found with a wide variety of these names _ such as "La Charny," Please see Treasures, Page 17 Tuesday October 7, 2014 TREASURES From PAGE 16 "La Orne," "La Clair," "La Chapelle," "La Landes," "La Mime" and "La Verdon," to name just a few. They all sound very French, but they have no real meaning. "La Barque," for example, translates as "the barge" or "the small boat," and since the decoration on the case is floral, this has FLINT HILLS SHOPPER nothing whatever to do with the actual design of this clock. It is just a name picked out to sound fancy and appeal to American customers. The value of Royal Bonn china case clocks has declined in recent years, and this one should be valued for insurance purposes in the $300 to $400 range. ___ Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson have writ- ten a number of books on antiques. Riana, a junior at ESU studying Elementary Education, said, “My favorite thing about being a Big Sister is getting to hang out with somebody equally as awesome as myself!” Riana’s favorite memory of her and Lexy is this summer when they went on a match fishing trip sponsored by “Pass it on Outdoor Mentoring” and Lexy caught the catch of the day! Lexy, a fifth grader in Emporia, said, “My favorite memory with Riana is also fishing!” Her favorite part about having a Big would be getting to see them a lot. Lexy described Riana as pretty, nice and silly! When asked what she would say to a potential volunteer, Riana stated, “it is the best escape from reality. If something is bothering you, being able to hang out with your Little Sister is a great opportunity to get things off your mind!” Riana states that she has always wanted to be a Big Sister because she never had a younger sister! Riana and Lexy are a great example of what a successful match looks like! Riana is very dedicated and hopes to be able to make a difference and work for BBBS after graduation. If you have ever considered mentoring or would like to learn more please call us at (620) 342-5645! LEXY AND RIANA HANGING OUT.
