THE BEACON November 12, 2014 BREAKFAST LECTURE SERIES LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY is the theme of our Breakfast Lecture Series that is underway on Friday mornings. A light breakfast is served at 7:00 a.m., followed by the program from 7:15 - 7:45 a.m. The intensity of our desire for a relationship with God is manifested in our prayer life. Prayer is our human response to the awareness of God. This series on prayer will explore our image of God and consider some of the challenges postmodern people encounter in their relationship to God. MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE Our Holy Trinity Senior Youth are hosting a Middle School Dance Friday, November 14, from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. The Senior Youth will set up at 6:15 p.m. and help chaperone the dance. Junior Youth are asked to invite friends to the dance. Admission is $5 per person and proceeds support our Holy Trinity Youth mission projects. TRINITY TRAVELERS The Trinity Travelers will enjoy an outing Saturday, November 15, to the Oyster Roast at Cardinal Point Vineyards and Winery in Afton. Carpools leave the church at 10:30 a.m. and return in the afternoon. The admission fee is $15 per person (payable at the winery) which covers live music entertainment, a complimentary glass, and tasting samples. Oysters and additional beverages are available for purchase separately; or, picnic baskets are allowed for those who want to bring their own food. SPECIAL MUSICAL CELEBRATION Organist-Choirmaster Bill Greene and Harvey Huiner, along with other area organists, will be playing in a special musical celebration Sunday, November 16, at 3:00 p.m., at Court Street United Methodist Church in downtown Lynchburg. The recital is sponsored by the Lynchburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in honor of George B. Clark, who is celebrating fifty years as musician at Court Street Church. The public is invited to attend. THOMAS MASS Our next Thomas Mass will be held Sunday, November 16, at 5:00 p.m. This service of Holy Communion is in the context of a meditative liturgy which has its roots in the Finnish Lutheran tradition. Included in this worship experience is the opportunity for informal movement between various stations for meditation and prayer. Join us for this special worship service, especially if work, sports, or travel schedules prevent your participation on Sunday morning. SERVANT OUTREACH PROJECT Our November outreach project is a canned food drive for the Rivermont Area Emergency Food Pantry. Grocery bags, complete with an attached suggested shopping list, are available in the narthex. We are asked to please fill and return the bags during the month of November. Monetary contributions are also encouraged. Special envelopes are available on the narthex desk. WEDNESDAY CHILDREN’S MINISTRY The next session of our monthly Wednesday Children’s Ministry will be held November 19, from 5:30 - 6:45 p.m. A light supper and a variety of learning and creative activities are provided for children from age three through grade five. TRINITY TRAVELERS’ TRAINS & TEA LUNCHEON The Trinity Travelers will meet Thursday, November 20, and travel to Prospect, Virginia, to the home of Elly and Lou Emsley to see Lou’s ever-expanding(!) model train collection and to enjoy a light luncheon. So far, we have chicken vegetable soup, assorted homemade jams, gingerbread cookies, lemon curd, mint syrup, apple strudel, chocolate pistachio cake, German chocolate cake, Swedish rye bread, Scandinavian rosettes, Mississippi mud cake, vegetarian soup, plum puddings, and chicken corn chowder. We need everyone’s help to prepare and donate foods that may be frozen easily. Quart food containers are available at the church. Food items that cannot be put into individual containers should be brought in disposable aluminum pans. THANKSGIVING OFFERINGS Our special Thanksgiving offerings are used for the broader work of the Lutheran Church through the Virginia Synod. Ministering to the needs of children and families, Lutheran Family Services (LFS) provides foster care, facilitates adoptions, and provides homebased services that help keep families together. Through Minnick Education Centers, LFS provides day schools for students with complex educational needs. LFS also plays a pivotal role in disaster response and providing services to those with developmental challenges. We are proud of the broad mission outreach of our Church and are challenged to give it our generous support. CANDLE TRIBUTES All are reminded of the opportunity to dedicate the candles used in worship each week to the glory of God in memory or in honor of loved ones or in celebration of special events (birthdays, baptismal anniversaries, wedding anniversaries, etc.). The tribute dedication is printed in the Sunday worship bulletins along with the altar flower dedication. Included are the altar candles, the sanctuary lamp, and candles for the Globusleuchter. INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING SERVICE Thursday, November 27, at 9:30 a.m. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church We look forward to worshiping with our neighbors from Agudath Sholom Synagogue, Centenary United Methodist Church, Church of the Covenant, First Christian Church, First Unitarian Church, the Muslim community, and Peakland Baptist Church. ADVENT WREATH MAKING All are invited to join us in the Fellowship Hall Sunday, November 30, at 9:30 a.m., as we make Advent wreaths for our homes. Families are asked to attend together so that older hands may assist those who are younger. Wreath-making materials will be provided and a free will offering is requested.
