It’s also a rematch of last year’s Western Conference Semifinal, when the Stars eliminated the Griffins in six games. Last season the Stars lost three of their four matchups in the regular season against Grand Rapids. Travis Morin led the Stars with four points in those four games last year. PLAYERS TO WATCH For the Texas Stars, Travis Morin is on a three-game point streak and currently leads the Stars with 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) on the season. The Griffins have been paced offensively by Teemu Pulkinen, who has four goals and four assists in 10 games this season. BETWEEN THE PIPES For the Stars, Jussi Rynnas is coming off back-to-back wins, stopping 55-of-58 shots over those two games (.948 SV%) and Jack Campbell stopped 29-of-31 shots in his last performance for Texas. The Griffins are led by Tom McCollum, who owns a 2.16 GAA and .909 SV% in seven appearances this season. MORIN, KLINGBERG STANDING OUT EARLY AMONG AHL LEADERS Travis Morin has picked up right where he left off from last year’s MVP campaign. The Stars forward is currently tied for first overall in league scoring with 18 points on the year (six goals, 12 assists). Though currently on an NHL call-up, Stars defenseman John Klingberg is off to a fast start in his rookie season. Klingberg’s 12 points (four goals, eight assists) are tied for second among AHL defensemen, and third in overall rookie scoring. ONE OF THE LEAGUE’S TOP DUOS The Stars duo of Travis Morin (18 points) and John Klingberg (12 points) are tied for first in the AHL currently with their 30 combined points along with Kris Newbury and Casey Wellman of the Hershey Bears. PAIRING OFF The Stars ware playing a two-game set against a team for the fourth time this season. STARS HAT TRICKS th Travis Morin tallied the first hat trick of the season for the Texas Stars on October 25 in a 6-5 overtime loss to the th Oklahoma City Barons and finished the game with four points overall. Derek Hulak scored a hat trick on November 8 in an 8-2 win at Charlotte, the first of his pro career. STARS DEBUT NEW COACHING STAFF The Texas Stars debut a new coaching staff this season in Derek Laxdal and assistant Karl Taylor. Laxdal returns to the Dallas Stars organization, where he spent five seasons as the head coach of the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads and won the 2007 Kelly Cup. Laxdal spent the past four years as head coach of the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings, and won the CHL’s 2014 Memorial Cup. Former Stars head coach Willie Desjardins and assistant Doug Lidster both departed after the past two seasons to take over for the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. RALLO RETURNS Greg Rallo was a member of the Texas Stars’ inaugural roster in 2009-10 and appeared in 147 games over the franchise’s first two seasons before departing for the San Antonio Rampage (Florida Panthers). This offseason, Rallo chose to sign and return to the Texas Stars for the 2014-15 campaign. The forward entered this season ranked among the Stars th th th th franchise career leaders in goals (6 , 45), assists (7 , 53) points (7 , 98), power play goals (5 , 16), game-winning goals th th (5 , 10), and overtime goals (4 , 4). THE LAST ORIGINAL STARS Three players on this season’s Texas Stars roster remain from the team’s inaugural season. Maxime Fortunus, Travis Morin and Greg Rallo all skated for the Stars in 2009-10. Fortunus and Morin have remained staples in the team’s lineup over the past five seasons, while Rallo spent three years with the San Antonio Rampage and Florida Panthers before returning to Texas this year. HONKA MAKES HIS PRO DEBUT th 18-year-old Julius Honka makes his professional debut this season in Texas, after being selected 14 overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The Finnish defenseman spent last season with the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos on loan from his junior club in Finland. After beginning training camp in the NHL, Honka was assigned to spend this season with the AHL’s Texas Stars.
