Financial Aid Night
Seniors and Parents: The Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed by
seniors who plan to attend a two or four year college next year. Tori Sharpe, Wake County
Schools Financial Aid Advisor will sponsor Financial Aid Night on Thursday, November 6th at
6:30 pm in the auditorium Bill Cox, Deputy Director, Grants, Training and Outreach with the
North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority will be the presenter. Attend this session to
learn more about paying for college.
College Foundation of North Carolina CFNC College Application Week
HSHS Student Services is participating in CFNC College Application Week. Seniors will have
the opportunity to complete college applications during the week of November 10-14. North
Carolina College Application Week is a statewide college access initiative designed to provide
every NC graduating senior the opportunity to apply to college online through CFNC.org.
Students will be able to use College Board Fee Waivers if they qualify. Note: Some NC colleges
will accept college application fee waivers during this week. Seniors who would like assistance
with completing college applications to NC colleges must sign up in Student Services by
November 7th. College Application Week events include: College Visits, Financial Aid Session
(open to juniors and seniors) and counselor led small group sessions to assist students with
completing college applications.

Holly Springs PTSA Scholarship - Discipline: General; Amount: (2) $500;
Requirements: must be a senior in good standing, member of the HSHS PTSA by October 26,
2014, be admitted to a two or four-year college by Fall 2015.
Additional requirements: Complete a brief description of your experience and how it “paints a
picture” of who you are and your future goals. Submit a recommendation letter from a HSHS
faculty or staff member. Interested seniors may access additional information and the online

Duke University presents the Benjamin N. Duke Scholarship – All applicants from
NC and SC who apply and are accepted for undergraduate admission is automatically considered
for this award. This scholarship exceeds $250,000 over eight semesters which includes stipends
for two summer experiences. There is no separate application and no financial need component.
Duke is looking for applications that embody their program’s core values of community,
empathy, intentionality and imagination, but do so in diverse and individualized ways. If you are
hesitant to apply because of the cost, please reconsider. All of the merit scholarships that Duke
offers are housed under the umbrella of the Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows

NASSP-Prudential Spirit of Community Awards – This opportunity for students who
have taken part in community service activities over the past year by completing an online
application at the following email address: http://spirit.prudential.com or www.nassp.org/spirit,
click on the “Apply Now” link, and follow the screen instructions. The online application must
be submitted by November 4th and the school must certify ONE application by November
11, 2014. The selected person will become eligible to win an unrestricted award of $1,000 or
more, engraved medallion and fabulous trip with a parent to Washington D.C. next May.

Suntrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes– Discipline: General; Amount:
$500; Free to enter and eligibility not based on GPA or financial need. There are fifteen chances
to win and one winner chosen every two weeks from October to May. Learn more information

Thomas Wolfe Scholarship – UNC at Chapel Hill – Discipline: English;
Amount: full-ride scholarship; This scholarship will identify and reward a student with
exceptionally focused literary ability and promise. Additional information and application are

for the scholarship by November 15th.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, Sigma Rho Zeta Chapter Scholarship Discipline: General; Amount: $500. Requirements: 2.5 or higher unweighted GPA and must
plan to attend college Fall 2015. Additional Requirements: submit three letters of
recommendation in sealed envelopes, an official transcript, must submit a narrative in 500 or
more words that explores the following topic: “My Pursuit of Academic Excellence.” Additional

BBB Torch Scholarship – Amount: $1,000 up to $2,000; Discipline: General; Eligibility
Requirements: must be a college-bound high school juniors, seniors and college
undergraduates. Applicant must submit a 400 – 500 word essay, along with an application
packet, official transcript and a letter of recommendation from a BBB Accredited Business.

The National MS Society, Scholarship Program - will begin accepting applications
on October 1, 2014. MS shouldn’t stand in the way of an education. The National MS to help
highly qualified students who have been diagnosed with MS or who have a parent with MS
achieve their dreams of going to college. Applicants must be United States citizens or legal
residents living in the U.S. or a U.S. Territory. The National MS Society raises funds to support
scholarships, establishes award criteria and directs the evaluation of all applications.
Criteria: Individuals who have MS or have a parent with MS are eligible to apply as long as
they meet all of the following eligibility Additional Criteria: Must be enrolled in an
undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or
vocational technical school in the U.S. or a U.S. Territory for the 2015-16 academic year; will be
enrolled in at least six credit hour s per semester in coursework leading to a degree, license or
certificate. Deadline: January 15, 2015
The North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals established this charitable
fund at Triangle Community Foundation to benefit Hispanic students in North Carolina. The
North Carolina Hispanic College Fund awards annual scholarships worth between $500 and
$2,500. Scholarships recipients are recent graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of
Hispanic/Latino background. Recipients of a NC Hispanic College Fund scholarship must enroll
in a degree program at a community college or a 2 or 4 year college/university and be committed
to public service and community development. Eligibility Criteria: Graduate of a NC high school
within the past 2 years; a four-year cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale; 2 letters of
recommendation from a high school teacher, principal, pastor, employer, or other community leader; an
official high school transcript; personal statement (500 words); Deadline: January 15, 2015
NCAE and the NC Foundation for Public School Children (NCFPSC)
presents the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship - Discipline: General;
Amount: TBD; Criteria: must be a senior and a North Carolina resident. Also the selection will
include character, community involvement and scholastic achievement. Additional
requirements: resume, official transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a one page essay on
“Why do you think you deserve this scholarship?” Additional information and an application

Triangle Pest Scholarship - Amount: $1,000; Triangle Pest Control has established
technology as one of its primary goals. In order to fuel this goal, Triangle Pest Control has
created a merit-based scholarship fund for individuals seeking education in environmental
studies. This scholarship will be awarded to an individual who has displayed academic
excellence, in addition to a passionate pursuit of furthered environmental education at an

T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood®- Project is excited to announce the addition of a new
scholarship model for early childhood students. The T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Scholars
model is a stipend based scholarship for students who are enrolled as full time students at any
N.C. community college. Traditionally, T.E.A.C.H. scholarships have been limited to those
currently working in child care. However, this new model will be available to those who are not
already working or are working less than 20 hours per week in a licensed child care program.
This scholarship is ideal for graduating high school seniors who are interested in pursuing an
Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. Participants can receive up to 5 stipends to help
offset their educational costs and then agree to work in a child care setting that serves at risk
children upon graduation. Interested seniors who would like more information and to access an

may apply year-round.
Ronald McDonald House Charities US Scholarship Program- This scholarship is
for seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and community

The Stephen J. Brady STOP Hunger Scholarships – This opportunity is funded by
the Sodexo Foundation recognize students who are driving awareness and mobilizing youth to be
catalysts for innovative models and solutions to eliminate hunger in America. Applicants must
have demonstrated ongoing commitment to their community by performing unpaid volunteer
services impacting hunger in the United States within the last 12 months. Additional
consideration is given to students working to fight childhood hunger. Students selected as
national STOP Hunger Scholarship recipients will receive a $5,000 scholarship, as well as a
$5,000 grant made in their name to the hunger-related charity of their choice in their local
community. In addition, selected regional honorees will receive a $1,000 grant made in their
name to the hunger-related charity of their choice in their local community. (Up to five
scholarship recipients and twenty honorees are recognized each year.) Scholarships are open to
students (kindergarten through graduate school) enrolled in an accredited educational institution

College/University Scholarships
– The Seby Jones
Scholarship (nonrenewable) is for motivated Wake County students. Students being considered
for this scholarship should complete the application for admission by November 15, 2014 and
submit the scholarship application by December 1, 2014. Students eligible for this scholarship
must be entering college for the first time and enroll as a full-time student. Please note that the
scholarship application will be emailed to students who qualify.

Appalachian State University – Seby Jones Scholarship
Boston University Presidential Scholarship – Amount: $20,000 (renewable);This
tuition scholarship is award to students with exceptional academic achievement. No additional
nominations or essays are required. All student need to do to be considered is to apply for
admission by December 1, 2014.
Boston University Trustee Scholarship Competition – This program is seeking
students with outstanding academic ability and the potential to inspire fellow students to excel.
Trustee scholars rank at the top of their classes and demonstrate exceptional leadership in their
school and communities. This scholarship covers full undergraduate tuition plus orientation and
mandatory undergraduate student fees for four years. Additional information and the application
are available online at: www.bu.edu/admissions/trustee. Please note that this scholarship
requires a counselor statement/ nomination. Nominations, essays, and applications must be
submitted by December 1, 2014.
Elon University Teaching Fellows Program – Elon Teaching Fellows receive $5,500
in scholarship funding and renewable while in good standing to support and enhance a four-year
preparation as a four-year teacher. Recipients may retain the Presidential ($6,000) or Elon
Engagement Scholarship ($3,500) if previously awarded. Study abroad airfare is included if
majoring in a Foreign Language and two required winter term courses (American History Study
Tour and The Washington Center Academic Seminars. Students may apply online at

Greensboro College Merit Scholarships – Each student accepted to Greensboro College is
reviewed for merit scholarships. Merit scholarships are awarded regardless of financial need and
are renewable for up to three years based on student’s GPA. For additional information,

deadline is February 1, 2015.
Lenoir-Rhyne University – LR Teaching Scholars Program - Are you interested in becoming
an effective teacher for our public schools? The school is now accepting applications and
priority will be given to students who apply by January 10, 2015. Spaces are limited for this
scholarship opportunity so apply at http://edu.lr.edu/teachingscholars. Prospective students are
also encouraged to attend the Discover LR Enrollment Management event on Saturday,
November 15, 2014.
UNC at Greensboro - UNCG Guarantee is a program that offers outstanding financial aid
packages for those who qualify and a support program that provides a variety of opportunities
and services to enhance the students’ academic achievement, leadership skills, and personal
success. Students who qualify will have the opportunity to attend UNCG while accruing little or
no debt. In order to be eligible you must meet the following requirements: Be admitted to
UNCG; be a NC resident; demonstrate academic promise and potential to the satisfaction of the
committee; be pursuing a first undergraduate degree; have graduated from HS within the past 7
months of first enrollment at UNCG; enroll full-time during the regular academic year; have a
family income that does not exceed 100% of poverty; qualify for federal student financial aid;
