Free Pre-Lunch Seminar with Power Panel, Election for 2015 Board of Directors, Plus Donation Presentation to Gillis Meadowbrook Country Club closed its doors at the end of October, so the November 20 chapter meeting will be held at Abdallah Shrine Hall, 5300 Metcalf. Come early for a free pre-lunch seminar (10:00-11:00) with four Kansas City female leaders: Debbie Leonard CPA, MBA, Thill & Leonard; Lori Worth, Vibe Communications; Pascale Henn, Business Law Advisors, LLC; and Alana Muller, corporate networking coach. These woman entrepreneurs will give an overview of business practices and will also take questions. Lunch Topic: The C’Crets of Networking with Debbie Leonard The comment most often heard about Debbie Leonard is “No, you can’t be a CPA! You have way too much personality!” Debbie Leonard is indeed a CPA of a different breed. She is the business development partner in the CPA firm of Thill & Leonard, and specializes in business planning, taxation, efficiency implementation and growth strategies. She has been recognized as a Small Business Advocate from the SBA for her work with start-up companies, helping to get their accounting on track from inception. Debbie is a frequent speaker and an author of the newly released book, The C’Crets of Networking. Free Pre-Lunch Power Panel Seminar Here’s a brief look at each of the panel STANDARDS presenters that are being hosted by new NARI member Arvest Bank. Debbie Leonard will be a member of the panel and is also the lunch keynote speaker on networking. Lori Worth, President and Visionary of Vibe Communications Lori Worth and “live wire” share the same initials LW. Coincidence? Probably not. She’s the epitome of a “people-person” whose enthusiasm is infectious and expertise is without question. Her background spans a 20-year track record in developing culture, driving grassroots initiatives and orchestrating successful PR, marketing and branding campaigns for small to multimilliondollar organizations. Poised under pressure and ever-mindful of brand perceptions, Lori is a trusted brand advocate for clients, both behind the scenes and in the spotlight. Pascale Henn, Attorney, Business Law Advisors Pascale Henn practices in the area of commercial law, with an emphasis in business contracting, procurement and supply contracting, distributor and dealer sales, government contracting, business formation, commercial real estate, corporate compliance, and corporate policy drafting and implementation. She has over twenty years of experience as legal counsel to Fortune 100 multi-national corporations as well as to small start-ups and sole proprietorships. Alana Muller is a corporate networking coach, workshop facilitator, keynoter, lecturer and the author of the book, Coffee Lunch Coffee: A Practical Field Guide for Master Networking and a companion blog, CoffeeLunchCoffee. com. Her accessible, relevant, immediately actionable approach to professional networking has helped thousands of people formulate 1 a strategic mindset around networking while creating a game plan to get out there and connect. She has been a contributor to Forbes.com, The Huffington Post, CNBC and other publications and was a featured speaker at TED OverlandPark. Alana is the former President of Kauffman FastTrac, a global provider of training to aspiring and established entrepreneurs, providing them the tools, resources and networks to start and grow successful businesses. The President’s Message As I write this letter, October is here and the Royals are in the World Series! Holy $&%*! I even find myself coming down with “Royal Fever”, and I don’t care for baseball that much! I was here during the 1985 World Series, although much younger, but it definitely is cool to live in Kansas City now with a new perspective. Things are happening with your NARI chapter also. We just had our last lunch meeting at Meadowbrook Country Club. Our November lunch will be held at the Abdallah Shrine Hall at 5300 Metcalf Avenue. This year’s Holiday Happy Hours is going to be at the Hallbrook Country Club, 112th and State Line. Hallbrook will also host our lunches in 2015. Thanksgiving is around the corner, and I hope you have lots to be thankful for. I know that I am definitely thankful for our own Jan Burchett! She has made my presidency this year almost effortless. Thank you, Jan! This year’s Thanksgiving weekend not only brings great food and family, but it also gives me the chance to move my motherin-law to Arkansas! Now there is something to be thankful for! I hope that the holidays treat you well, and I look forward to seeing you soon. Maybe if you are lucky, you can move your in-laws too! See you soon, Jerry Hillard, President Kansas City NARI 913-492-3030 [email protected] Board Minutes Here’s the Abdallah Hall sign at 5300 Metcalf for those who might need a landmark when going there for the November 20 KC NARI chapter meeting. 2 November Board Meeting: Three applications were approved. Thompson Lumber Company. From six yards, lumber was delivered by horse and wagon until trucks became the mainstay in the 30’s. In 1950, Albert set forth to make this company stand above the competition with top notch customer service and providing “Tamm Good Lumber.” Thereafter, Ercell Arney came on board and over time became a primary partner. As fate would have it, lighting struck the electrical system in the lumber shed one Sunday morning in August of ‘62. However, the Albert Tamm Lumber Company continued to grow and prosper. As time went by, ownership changed hands to Mr. Arney and partners, yet the renowned Albert Tamm name remained. Today in the 21st century, Albert Tamm Lumber Company continues as a well-known and respected lumber business among its competitors and its customers. Commercial construction and renovation companies rely on Tamm Lumber Company’s dedication to their customers and quality products. Ercell’s son, Don, now heads up the yard along with many dedicated employees who like to work there. All involved continue a long standing tradition of having a vested interest in its future and will continue for generations to come. At the November 20 lunch Albert Tamm will feature Quaker Windows. Quaker Windows are built from American products in Freeburg, Missouri. This 65-year-old company makes quality windows in vinyl, aluminum, clad wood and steel. On October 23rd, Jim suffered a heart attack. He was 52. Jim was instrumental in helping to grow the company to what it is today. Our family strongly supports autism and would greatly appreciate NARI members contributing to Autism Speaks at www.autismspeaks. org. Jim’s wife, Robin Atkins, is also a NARI member with KC Magazine. Here is Jim’s obituary. Jim’s passing leaves a huge hole in this world that can never be replaced. Jim was a tremendous husband, brother, uncle, son and friend. He was incredibly intelligent and witty, and above all else loving. His strong unwavering character always guided him to do the right thing. Jim put other people first and truly cared about them. His love was deep and genuine. Jim was extremely entrepreneurial. He always believed that he would prevail. He worked hard in business, but it was the relationships that meant the most to him. Jim took great pride in mentoring others to help them better themselves. He appreciated the mentoring that had been given to him at a young age, and did the same for others. There was nothing more important to Jim than family. He loved his family deeply. He would not let anything get in the way of being available for his family. One of Jim’s very favorite things to do was to simply visit with his family. He had a few very close friends that were in his family circle. Jim was a tremendous husband. He always put his wife Robin first. Always. He believed in her completely and was her biggest fan. There was nothing that he wouldn’t do to see her happy. Jim had many, many friends. People who knew Jim really loved him. They especially loved his sense of humor. He was always ready with a quick-witted line that made people smile. Jim was a staunch conservative, and very proud of it. He read and kept a copy of the constitution at hand. The constitutional principles were part of his core. He was a true patriot. He loved Ronald Reagan. Jim actively studied the issues and people behind the politics. He knew more than most anyone. He didn’t judge others for thinking differently. He tried to educate them. He loved remodeling spaces. It was his hobby. He spent his career in the remodeling industry as a sales professional, and he was extremely good at what he did. He spent the last two years remodeling his and his wife’s home. He absolutely loved doing projects. He took great pleasure in building things to last. He has left us way too soon. He actively worked to maintain a healthy life. He wanted to grow old with his wife. Memorial contributions may be made to Autism Speaks at www.autismspeaks.org or 1060 State Road, 2nd Floor, Princeton, NJ 08540. This month we’ll get to know each candidate with their answers to the following questions: 1. What does our motto, Business Built Together, mean to you? Or give us an example of how NARI has helped your business. 2. What is the one most favorite food item on Thanksgiving Day that you can’t wait to eat? 3. Give us a one-word description of you…and that word must start with an N, an A, an R or an I! President - Gene Bosley, McCray Lumber & Millwork 1. The motto means that, while many members may compete in some way, we all recognize that there is more business to be had if we work together to enhance the public awareness of NARI. When NARI members refer work to one another, the client gets the best possible outcome, and all of our business improves. 2. My grandmother just turned 102 this month and still makes the best dinner rolls and apple butter on the planet! 3. I am Ready. First Vice President - Pat Strand, CR, Total Home 1. NARI has been a big part of our growth since becoming more involved. It has allowed us to create great partnerships with vendors and subs that care about each other and the remodeling industry. 2. Mom’s mashed potatoes 3. I thought I would give you a few choices: N-got nothing good – Neat; A-Awesome, Accomplished, Accountable; R-Resilient, Refreshing, Relaxed; I- Instinctive Second Vice President - Austin Cornell, MSC Enterprises 1. I use NARI on a daily basis when looking for specific trade contractors or design specialists. The Business Built Together motto gives our company the ability to feel comfortable working with any NARI member! 2. Sausage rolls 3. I am Interested! Secretary - Judy Transue, CRPM, CHC Creative Remodeling 1. Business Built Together--a team of people working together to conduct business and in our industry it could be a general contractor, designer, subcontractor, supplier, business consultant and more. Without a team, no one succeeds on their own. 2. My most favorite food item for Thanksgiving - sweet potato casserole. 3. I am Reliable. Treasurer - Greg Heiman, CR, Heiman Development 1. Business Built Together means that all of our members are in this as a group- even though we are in competition with each other. If we all work together to make the industry better, we all win in the end. 2. Thanksgiving is one of my least favorite meals. I know I’m weird, so I would say the 7- layer dip as an appetizer is my favorite. 3. I am Reachable. Director (through 2016) - Tommy Angotti, Factory Direct Appliance 1. To me, KC NARI’s Business Built Together means the ultimate networking opportunity with professionals helping professionals. 2. My grandma’s Sicilian olive salad. 3. I am Inspiring (according to my 10-year-old son when I asked for his help on this one!) Director (through 2017) - Chris Peterson, CR, CLC, Schloegel Design Remodel 1. NARI helps our business in many ways. We take advantage of the certifications as well as the roundtables and phase specific seminars (window installation, stair and handrail trim, etc.). I think surrounding ourselves with other professional and ethical companies pushes us all to be our best and not settle for what was good enough yesterday. 2. Smoked turkey. 3. I am Iowegian (person from Iowa). House of Delegate Rep - Joni Smith, Great American Building Materials 1. Business Built Together not only means gaining business through networking and relationships within NARI, but also building up the community’s view of the business we are in. There are many positive events - big or small - that stem from NARI. They range from community service projects to exemplary service provided to a homeowner. These positive events can come either from the group as a whole, or individual members acting to benefit our business and our industry. 2. Pecan pie a-la-mode! 3. I am Reliable. (Continued on next page) 11 The following members will retain their Board position for 2015: Director (through 2015) - Lance McCarthy, ReTouch Design Build Renovate 1. Business Built Together means collaboration is more powerful and profitable than competition. I have met for coffee with many of my fellow NARI members to share and learn insight into the tricky business of running a construction company. 2. Pecan pies are hands-down the best part of the day. 3. I am Relational. Chairman of the Board - Jerry Hillard, Top Master 1. Business Built Together to me means strengthening our chapter by using each other before using non-NARI members. We are fortunate enough to have a lot of NARI members as customers, and we use NARI members as subcontractor activities for services that we don’t already provide such as cabinets, flooring and wall touch up. Nigro Painting and SVB Wood Floors have bailed us out of jams before. 2. Turkey 3. I am Resourceful. The annual election of the Board of Directors takes place at the chapter lunch meeting on Thursday, November 20. Upon election, Gene Bosley will name two President’s Directors who will serve during his presidency in 2015. EXTRA! EXTRA!
