Successful large law firms or legal networks, however, only exist and persevere if they are open to clients and, as the world changes, to its new challenges. This is how we like to see ourselves but who better than you, to judge this for us. The sole purpose of Miranda Alliance’s “Year In Review”: to unveil who we truly are. However this time round things proved simple. We just looked at the fundamentals of what it is our clients ask us to do, day-in day-out. They ask us to complement their own capabilities. Companies, law firms, NGOs and individuals rely on our expertise, international standards and multijurisdictional experience as they develop and expand their own activities. And we complement our clients’ know-how by working diligently, patiently and often long hours identifying the applicable legal regimes, drafting robust clauses, fighting relentlessly on their behalf in courts and tribunals, or equally hard to avoid disputes arising in the first place. This is our theme. But a desire to complement can only be achieved if we: • know and understand our clients’ business, priorities and culture; and • give our lawyers the freedom to think differently and to innovate. But it’s definitely nice when your peers also think you’re doing a good job. And this past year has seen the Miranda Alliance win a lot of praise. As well as Miranda Alliance members being ranked as ‘Leading’ firms nationally, and a number of our lawyers ranked as leaders in their own practice areas by the major international legal directories, we were also ranked as ‘Leading – Africa-wide’ for Projects & Energy and Corporate/Commercial in Chambers Global. In addition, member firms were ranked among The Lawyer’s Africa Elite. This is why over the last year, we have extended our reach to new countries and to new centres. In the summer of 2013 we added Cameroon-based Abeng Law Firm to the Miranda Alliance. One of the country’s longest-established, best known and most innovative firms it is headquartered in the main business centre, Douala. The addition of the twelve-lawyer team, extending our Francophone forestry, mining and oil and gas practices, enables us to capitalise on Abeng’s leading trade and investment, commercial (including OHADA), disputes and compliance expertise. We have also drilled deeper into the markets in which we already operate. In many countries, member firms now have offices in both the administrative and main commercial centres to better connect clients’ legal, regulatory and business needs. Miranda’s reach is already remarkable. With further bold moves proposed for 2014, last year Miranda took time out to reflect on the way it presents itself. Underlining this, the firm’s internal motto “reach further” has become its public signature. Miranda is proud of its history and values. And now the brand identity enables Miranda to share its unique ethos and differentiation from the very first moment: through a business card, a letterhead, our website, a brochure or a press ad. We are after all people before lawyers. Mindful of the added value that our work often represents, we offer pro bono legal support to non-governmental organisations and the like, but also seek to make a difference across all the jurisdictions in which we are present. We devote time and effort to raising money and supporting a set of projects that we choose on a yearly basis, with 2013 having been no exception. We know that extensive lists of CSR projects are dull, and ultimately self-serving, so here we just mention some of our most colourful cases. csr Miracles in the making Amongst our most vibrant projects, is the Nuestra Medalla Milagrosa Nursery and Primary School in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Founded in 2010 by local teacher Milagrosa Sofia Boto Geko, the school strives to provide an education to 50 or so children that would otherwise be left illiterate and impoverished, in one of Malabo’s most deprived neighbourhoods. Milagrosa is steadfast in providing the children with a safe and secure environment in which to learn and grow and the Miranda Alliance has committed to help make her dream and life goal come true, and with it, to make a difference in “her” children’s lives. With such an aim, this past year ten Miranda Alliance lawyers undertook a sponsored 200 km cycle ride from Troia to Lagos (in Portugal) through which we were able to raise €10,000 for Milagrosa and the children under her care. Thanks to this initiative, the school now has its own well giving the children daily access to clean fresh water. It’s a small but significant achievement. As a body of people sharing a set of values, we’re well aware that no amount of billable hours could ever match the sense of fulfilment that comes from making a real difference in the lives of those who need us most. csr Making dreams come true Still on the subject of cycling, our member firms Miranda and Fátima Freitas this past year, took it upon themselves to enable an Angolan gold-winning cyclist to fulfil his life dream. Alberto da Silva, the fabled “Pepino”, is a sportsman who needs no introduction in his native Angola. Hailing from Benguela on the country’s West coast, this ex-soccer player and locksmith has won numerous trophies in national athletics and cycling competitions and well into his 90s, this unyielding legend, continues to compete. With the sponsorship from Miranda Alliance members, Pepino participated in the Huntsman World Senior Games held in Cleveland USA. But merely competing was not enough for Pepino, who went on to win two gold medals – his achievements reported by the local, national and international media. First held in 1987, the Games are considered the Senior Olympics, with their aim being to foster worldwide health, friendship and peace. Only open to the over 55s, they encompass 27 events over a two-week period each year. Pepino once again proved his remarkable physical condition by winning gold in the 40km and 20km cycling competitions – outpacing riders decades younger than him. A true inspiration, his determination to succeed exemplifies the values that drive us and that we hope to share with the communities of which we are a part. csr Holiday Season is always the best excuse No matter your religion, faith or creed, the Holiday Season is about giving, sharing and competing. Competing? Yes, why not. A competition with the right model and a shared cause can motivate and unite an entire community. As the Miranda offices in Lisbon comprise four floors, a contest was launched for the members of each, to assemble four teams and build Christmas trees entirely out of food. The result was unforgettable and the trees proof that Miranda’s attorneys and staff are both ingenious and resourceful. It was a heartfelt team effort from which we all gained. But the true winners were the children of Aldeias de Crianças SOS, a non-profit organisation present in over 130 countries devoted to taking care of orphaned and foster children, who received all the food used. P.S. A representative from Aldeias SOS chose the winning tree from floor 9 – next time you meet a Miranda attorney check if in addition to being an inspiring lawyer they are also an inspirational treemaker. csr Rocking and rolling with the Lex no More In 2013, Miranda’s house band Lex no More, took it upon themselves to once again sing their hearts out and compete alongside eight other bands at Rock ‘n’ Law, a non-profit initiative that seeks to unite Portugal’s leading law firms in a common cause. The concept is simple: each firm creates a rock band comprising partners and associates who give a once in a lifetime performance at an open air concert in front of Lisbon’s entire legal community. The proceeds of the concert are distributed amongst charities chosen by the organisation. Last year, the event raised close to €55,000 and gave the city’s lawyers the opportunity to, at least for one night, take a seat on the same side of the table. csr out of the office Take a bicycle and pedal for a project, support an initiative or Rock for a cause. There are countless ways you can embrace the communities you belong to and help to make a difference to people’s lives.
