A Newsletter from The Cincinnati Eye Institute Foundation Summer 2014 INSIGHTFULnews 2014 Golf Outing — A Success for Community Outreach The Cincinnati Eye Institute Foundation’s “Tee Off to Save Sight” golf outing on Friday, May 30th may not have reached PGA tour quality on the technical side, but it surpassed it for fun. Ninety-six golfers played on Cincinnati’s most beautiful public course, Cooper Creek’s Blue Ash golf course. TEE OFF TO SAVE SIGHT “The day was perfect,” said John Courtney, Golf Chair and MC for the awards ceremony. “Roselawn and The Foundation’s Vision Outreach programs were the real winners with over $42,000 raised to support The Foundation’s initiatives,” Courtney said. He added, “We may have started something with the introduction of the ‘248’ golf category.” This year the committee introduced a special category for players whose foursome’s The CEI Foundation ages add up to 248 years or more. Besides Annual Golf Outing the traditional golf awards for lowest score, longest drive, closest to the pin, players in the “248’ category were able to play from the forward tees and had their own prizes. The mission of The Foundation to serve the community, research and education, coupled with the world class operations of CEI, made the opportunity to be associated with the leading ophthalmologists in the world irresistible. I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves to help guide and support the mission of The Foundation.” Don Klekamp is a partner in the Keating Muething & Klekamp law practice. Don is on a number of boards including the Xavier University, Board of Trustees. “I have been, and continue to be, a patient of the outstanding ophthalmologists at Cincinnati Eye Institute. They have, without question, helped to preserve my eyesight. I am pleased to join The Foundation team as it strives to fulfill its commitment to improve eye care for the most vulnerable in our community. It is my opportunity to “give back” through Foundation initiatives, such as Oyler School’s OneSight Vision Center. Oyler School holds a special place in the hearts of the KMK staff that provided tutors to Oyler. I was proud to be included as part of that team.” Community Outreach Expands The Richard S. Kerstine Vision Outreach program and the Roselawn Eye Clinic are expanding. On July 8th, The Vision Outreach held its first monthly screening at Christ Church Cathedral on Fourth Street in downtown Cincinnati. The Outreach program screened the 5,000 club—a Tuesday dinner program for the homeless and less fortunate held at the cathedral every Tuesday. Clients requiring glasses or follow up by a physician will be scheduled for The Foundation’s Roselawn Eye Clinic the following day. 40 individuals were screened during this program. Amy Jones, Community Outreach Project Manager, said, “This is a great opportunity to expand the mission of The Foundation by reaching groups we would not ordinarily be able to help.” She added, “Screenings will be scheduled so that clients failing the vision exam can be scheduled for a dilated eye exam the next day with a volunteer doctor at the Roselawn Eye Clinic. Vouchers for glasses or a follow up treatment plan will be provided at that time.” Roselawn Eye Clinic is also expanding its screening services with its newest partner, St. Vincent de Paul on Bank Street in the West End. This partnership will provide a comprehensive, central location for a primary medical care clinic staffed with University of Cincinnati medical and nursing students, a medical social worker, and St. Vincent de Paul’s free pharmacy. Initially, this program will provide basic vision screening. Clients who fail their initial screening exam will be referred to The Foundation’s Roselawn Eye Clinic. The possibility of establishing a Roselawn satellite at the Bank Street location will be evaluated. Summer 2014 4,000 Patients Seen at Roselawn Clinic An Evening of Fine Food, Fine Wine, and Fine Art The Cincinnati Eye Institute Foundation has a special evening planned for November 13th at the Hilton Netherland Plaza— Plaza—A Feast for the Eyes. Although the Affordable Care Act will provide free screening and preventative healthcare for primary care, it does not include eye care. Unfortunately, the need for free eye care continues. Patients coming to the Roselawn Eye Clinic receive a comprehensive dilated eye exam conducted by one of our volunteer ophthalmologists or optometrists. If glasses are needed, they receive a prescription and voucher for a free pair of glasses from a local Lenscrafters. If additional medical issues are identified, i.e. surgery, etc, patients are referred to the University of Cincinnati.
