RBM SWEEPS UP WASTE AWARD
Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has done it again. This time the mining giant
walked off with two awards at the Waste Management Awards Gala at the
Durban Country Club last night (Thursday, 13 November). RBM became the first
mining entity in KwaZulu Natal to be honoured by the Institute for Waste
Management South Africa (IWMSA) with a Gold 4-Star Certificate and Best New
Entrant.
This award acknowledges and recognises RBM for demonstrating leadership in
promoting waste management, on-site recycling, proper record keeping and
environmental compliance throughout their operations.
RBM General Manager for Health, Safety, Environment & Security, Dr Peter
Eaglen, said the company is committed to controlling and disposing of waste in a
responsible manner.
“We have plans in place to ensure that employees, contractors and our
communities are able to live and work in a safe, healthy environment. All our
efforts are guided by legislation as well as Rio Tinto policies that outline very
clearly ways and actions that should be taken to safeguard the environment in
which we operate.”
Eaglen pointed out that his team carries out routine or unplanned visits to ensure
compliance and implement the necessary actions if conditions need to be
improved.
