Match Preview
Minnesota enters this season on the
heels of placing second at last year’s
NCAA Championship. The Gophers
boast the nation’s No. 1 ranking and
five wrestlers ranked among the
top-five at their weights. Coming off
an 11-6 campaign, Air Force named
Sam Barber its new head coach last
spring. The first-year head man has a
connection back to Minnesota, where
he coached at Division III Augsburg
College in Minneapolis, including
overseeing the Auggies’ 2007 Division
III National Championship team.
Series History
This is the sixth all-time meeting
between the Gophers and the Falcons.
Minnesota is a perfect 5-0 in these
matchups, winning the most recent
dual 41-3 during the 2008-09 season
at the Lone Star Duals in Dallas. This
is Minnesota’s third trip to Colorado
Springs, the last coming in 1981-82.
Old and Gold
The Gophers will be led this season
by five All-American seniors - Scott
Schiller (197), Logan Storley (174),
Dylan Ness (157), Nick Dardanes
(141) and Chris Dardanes (133). All
five are ranked among the top five at
their weight heading into the season.
Ness is a two-time national runner-up
at 157 (‘12 and ‘14), while Storley and
Schiller each finished third at NCAAs
last season. The Dardanes
have both dropped down a weight
class for this year, returning to the
classes in which they have earned
three combined All-America honors.
@GopherWrestling
New Faces
Minnesota graduated four senior
starters from last season’s team, all
of whom were All-Americans. Notably,
heavyweight Michael Kroells (So.) will
be asked to fill the very large shoes of
Tony Nelson, two-time National Champion and three-time defending Big Ten
champ. Brett Pfrarr will step in from
two-time All-American Kevin Steinhaus
at 184 and Nick Wanzek will enter the
lineup at 165 for Danny Zilverberg.
A Brotherhood... Literally
While Gopher wrestlers regularly discuss the brotherhood they share, there
is also a literal layer to that sentiment
within the program. The team has
four sets of brothers - the Kingsleys,
the Pfarrs, the Karabornis and the
Dardanes. In the case of the Karabornis and the Dardanes, they’re not only
brothers, but twin brothers. Additionally, administrative assistant David Thorn
will help welcome his younger brother
Tommy to the team this year, while
volunteer assistant coach Jayson Ness
helps his brother Dylan in his quest for
a National Championship.
