STEWARDSHIP
"After a long time the master of those servants came
back and settled accounts with them. The one who
had received five talents came forward bringing the
additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five
talents. See, I have made five more.’ His master said
to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since
you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great
responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.’”
Matthew 25: 19-21
Everything we have and everything we become are
gifts from God. Like the stewards in the parable, we
have been given gifts. Do we develop those gifts and
do we share them, or do we “bury” them and really do
nothing with them? Those who do the former, return
them with increase to the Lord, are not only
complimented, but embraced and invited: “Come share
your master’s joy.” - See more at: http://

• Identifying mental health resources and services in
the community.
• Offering prayer for and support to individuals with
mental illness and their families.
These are just a few ways to help. For more

SOCIAL JUSTICE
JUSTFAITH—SANCTITY OF ALL LIFE
The Catholic Church teaches that, as a gift from God,
every human life is sacred from conception to natural
death. This principle of the worth and dignity of all human
life is at the core of Catholic social teaching.
The JustFaith Ministries Sanctity of ALL Life module
engages this teaching and offers extensive action ideas
and activities for all of the life issues, including abortion, in
vitro fertilization, euthanasia and the death penalty.
We are looking to begin this program in January. This
program requires a six week commitment. If you are
interested in participating, please get in touch with Bridget
Hernandez
by
November
30.

STEWARDSHIP
STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT ON THE JESSE
TREE
Christmas is a time to celebrate giving. It’s a good
time to remember not only the gift of Jesus, our Savior,
from God, but the countless other gifts with which God
has blessed us. Without God we would not have our
families, our jobs, food on our table, a shelter to stay
warm, and life! With the Advent Season quickly
approaching, it is a time for us to remember that
everything we have is a gift from God, and the best
way to thank God for those gifts is by sharing them.
For years now, many of our parishioners have shared
their blessings by helping others during Advent through
donations to our Jesse Tree. We have consistently
been able to help the homeless, families in need, and
the retired religious. Each week of Advent we have a
special Jesse Tree collection, beginning with toys
which are donated to Heart-N-Hand to be given out to
children whose parents may not be able to afford toys
this year. The second week we collect hats, gloves,
socks, etc. which Kirstie Roberts takes on the Project
Uplift rounds to give to our brothers and sisters who
don’t have a warm place to live. The third week we
collect canned goods and non-perishable food that we
donate to Heart-N-Hand, who then gives it to families
in need. The fourth week we
do a special monetary
collection that goes to help
the retired religious.
You can help by bringing a
donation and placing it under
the Jesse Tree, or by helping
us to move the donations out
of the church. If you can help
with moving donations please
contact Bridget Hernandez at
816-979-3159
or
[email protected].
May God bless you and your
family this Christmas Season.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
REFLECTION ON THE THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A
One more Sunday and our liturgical year comes to a
close. The focus for these last few Sundays of the
Liturgical year is the end times, the final encounter
between God and humanity in which a final assessment of
one’s life and actions will take place. Traditionally we have
made this part of God’s job description. Today’s readings
remind us rather clearly that we take a very active part in
the final encounter with God.
The fear of the Lord seems to dominate the readings.
Psalm 128 focuses our thoughts with its refrain, “Blessed
are those who fear the Lord.” The fear of God is not one of
dread or trembling but rather one of awe, reverence,
respect and majesty. Such fear is affirmed as the
“beginning of wisdom.”
The first reading from the book of Proverbs praises and
blesses a woman for her role as a worthy wife, but most
especially for her ability to “fear the Lord.” Why such
praise?
Because anyone who “fears the Lord”
acknowledges the mystery, grandeur and majesty of God.
Such people seek to know, understand and gain wisdom
into the meaning and purpose of life, the purpose for which
we were created. For all human beings, such wisdom
leads to recognition of God’s many blessings to us, most
especially in terms of work and family.
Paul, in his First Letter to the Thessalonians, reminds
us that often we are worried about many things that we can
do nothing about. This leads to stress, confusion and
misunderstanding of what is really important in life. In
Christ, we have become “children of the light and children
of the day.” By focusing on Christ and living in his light, we
gain the wisdom we need to focus on what is important in
our relationship to God and others. We will remain “alert
and sober”, always attuned to God’s desires and intentions
and to what needs to be done so that even more light can
be cultivated.
Matthew’s parable of the talents can be interpreted in
many ways. The original intent of the parable as taught by
Jesus during his public ministry addressed the injustice
and oppression of the poor by the rich. It was understood
that the rich got richer by oppressing and stealing from the
poor. The first two servants act as retainers, assisting the
rich in oppressing others by gaining more wealth for the
master, thus cooperating in the
rampant economic injustice.
The third servant refuses to
oppress
others
by
not
cooperating in this unjust system.
By
boldly
questioning
his
master’s greed, oppression and
injustice, the third servant returns
to his master what was his to
begin with and nothing more.
For
this
he
is
severely
reprimanded and punished. Such is the fate of any person
who dares to question injustice and oppression, especially
in the realm of economics and the bottom line. Read this
way, the parable severely challenges our current economic
system and all those who cooperate in getting rich by
oppressing the poor.
Matthew, sixty years after Jesus, refashions this parable
into an allegory about the end times. In light of the end
times, it takes on a different meaning than it had during the
ministry of Jesus. The parable fashions the master as God
who entrusts us with gifts to be used for building up God’s
people. The praised disciples are those who use their gifts
wisely, boldly and faithfully, willing to take risks and be
creative in the use of their gifts for building up God’s
people.
Such disciples are willing to reach out to others, even
when inconvenient, challenging or costly, in order that
God’s care and love can be manifested. Such disciples
are prophetic, willing to challenge the status quo so that
justice and right relationship prevail. Such disciples do not
bury their gifts or hold on blindly to custom or tradition for
fear of not getting it right. Rather they trust enough in
God’s wisdom and light to be willing to take risks for God
and others.
Both interpretations of the parable uphold Jesus’
Jewish values which always favor justice, concern for all,
most especially the poor, marginalized and the powerless.
Reflect on how you live out these values as you prepare
for the end times.

Catholics are mostly exposed to the Bible through the
Sunday Lectionary Readings. In order to help us all enter
into the Bible through the Sunday readings, we are
offering study sessions that will provide an opportunity to
read, to study background to the readings, and to reflect
on how to apply the readings to our lives. We will gather
on November 23rd at 10:30am. All are welcome. Bring a
Bible and a friend. To register for these sessions, please

CIRCLE OF GRACE
Our parish is dedicated to

that goal, we are happy to comply with the Diocesan

who will present lessons to each grade of PSR on a
schedule of Sundays this fall. If parents do not wish for
their child to receive this training they may fill out an “Opt
Out” form. A letter was mailed to each family outlining the
program and it included a copy of the Opt Out form as
well as the schedule of training for each grade.
All volunteers with youth and children must attend

SIMPLE WAYS TO “TURN UP THE
BURN” (INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM)
PART 3
Spice up lunch with peppers. Capsaicin, the key
substance that makes chili peppers hot, stimulates
your “fight or flight” stress response and may increase
metabolism by 23 percent. Peppers may even improve
your muscle-to-fat ratio by inhibiting the production of
fat cells.
Garnish with dill weed or chives. Both of these
herbs are packed with kaempferol, a flavonoid that in
one study was found to increase the production of
metabolism, spurring thyroid hormones by about 150
percent.

SCC DINNER - MONDAY, DECEMBER 1
Our Wellness Center is hosting a dinner for all Small
Christian Community members and their families on
Monday, December 1 from 5-7pm in the Wellness Center.
This will be an open house event, so if you can’t make it
at 5pm, please stop by as your schedule allows.
As one of the characteristics of Small Christian
Communities is reaching out to others in need, we are
asking each family attending the meal to bring a blanket,
or bath towels, or kitchen towels that can be given to
families in need this Christmas season. St. Sabina
collects toys, hats, gloves, and food in conjunction with
our Jesse Tree donations to help families with Christmas
gifts, but many times families are in great need of other
practical household items, as well, and we would like to
help in this way. Please plan on joining us for this special
SCC Dinner hosted by our Wellness Center. To help us in
our planning, please RSVP to the parish office at 816-331

attend.

DELEGATION TO CINQUERA, EL SALVADOR
We have set the dates of January 13-20, 2015 for our
trip to El Salvador. We are planning this trip in
conjunction with Our Lady of the Presentation Parish.
Those traveling will have the opportunity to visit the
communities of Cinquera and San Rafael Cedros,
along with other places of significance within El
Salvador. Many of you had the chance to hear Zulma
speak of her experience and her thankfulness of being
a scholarship student when she visited our parish in
September. We are pleased that Zulma will be our
translator for our delegation when we are in El
Salvador. If you are interested in traveling with this
delegation, please contact Kris as soon as possible.
Those interested should begin application for a
passport now.

at the same time!
Our volunteers who help

proceeds will go to buy food
and supplies needed for the
community meals.
THANKSGIVING DAY MASS
Please join us on Thanksgiving
Day, November 27th at 9am for
our Thanksgiving Day Mass to
give thanks to God for all of his
blessings.
POINSETTIAS FOR CHRISTMAS
It's not too early to begin thinking about poinsettias for
decorating the church for Christmas. In your November
and December packets of monthly envelopes you will
find an envelope for donations to our Art and
Environment fund. We use these funds
to purchase poinsettias to enhance our
church for the Christmas season. You
may also make a donation on our
website. On the home page, click on the
on-line giving box located at the top
right of your screen. This will direct you
to our on-line giving site. If this is your
first on-line gift, please click, don't have
a log in, and you will be prompted for
registration information. If you have any questions about
on-line giving, please contact Bridget Hernandez at 816979-3159 or [email protected].

ARBOL DE JESE
ENFOCADA
Navidad.
