Tips for Mobility
I
When discussing a new range of
mobility scooters we had on offer
to a friend, he asked if there was
a model available with sails!!!! Of
course, he was joking, however when
choosing your mobility scooter, make
sure you think about what kind of
scooter suits your needs.
There are scooters which dismantle
for people who want to take a
scooter in the car for shopping, days
out or on holiday. Or perhaps you
want a scooter to go from your home
to a local shop or social event in
your area. There are even scooters
which you can take with you on a
plane or cruise ship.
There are, of course, other factors
to take into account, such as how
fast it can go, how far it can go on a
battery charge, together with style
and cost; but what’s important is
that you retain your independence
and continue to enjoy life, so choose
wisely.
For further information, contact
Tracey at Just Care Products
on 627177.
love my job!! I know I keep
saying this ... but with every
issue of the magazines that
I run ... the more I find
that people are just enjoying
discovering what there is to do on
this wonderful island of ours.
It's a HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY!!!
to 'My Time - Isle of Man' and
the ideas never cease. I do hope
you are getting 'ahold' of one
easily - but if you aren't - and you
can think of a venue that might
wish to stock them .... do let me
know and AS ALWAYS ... ideas
on articles? keep them coming!!!
Hugs and Happiness for the
coming New Year. Hee'moo.

We had made our way to Shrewsbury
at the weekend in eager anticipation
of what lay before us, an excited
group of women from all over the
island who enjoy the singing that
brings us together.
We are the Isle of Man
Women's Institute
Choir who are taking
part in the Federation's
Centenary competition
"Singing for Joy".
Altogether, 60 choirs from all
over Britain are battling to win
this competition and we were in
the first heat of twelve meeting in
Shrewsbury, which included women
from Shropshire and the Welsh areas
as well as the Isle of Man.
Our conductor is Karen Elliott
who started the choir three years
ago. We meet every Tuesday in Peel
and thoroughly enjoy ourselves. We
are a large choir but we get on so
well together and enjoy each other's
company.
Although we received a rapturous
applause from the audience, we did
not get through to the next round
but we might yet win the 'wild card'
which allows the best runners up to
take part in the final.
We are currently raising money for a
new piano, so we are singing all over
the island at various events. Keep a
watch out for us and come along to
join in the fun.

Flu vaccine
Have you already had a flu vaccine this year? If you have,
you can be assured that you are in the best possible position
to protect yourself against the influenza virus this year. The
vaccination is modified each year to offer protection against
the three strains of flu which are most likely to cause infection.
It's recommended to have a flu vaccine every year to ensure
you are protected against the strains thought to pose the
highest risk that year. If you have not had your flu vaccine
this year it may not be too late. Your GP practice may still be
offering NHS (free to patients in "at risk"
groups) and private flu vaccinations.
Boots also offer private flu vaccinations
at a price of £12.99 - pop into store or
call 616120 for more information.

- the Island’s Passenger Watchdog - will be
holding its next Public Meeting at the Villa Marina
on the morning of Saturday 8th November. We
hope to welcome Ian Longworth, the Island’s
Director of Public Transport, and we will be
reviewing the effect of the big changes in air
services since April. We will also be looking at
future prospects for ferry services now that
the threat posed by the Celtic Array wind farms
has been lifted and that the IOM Government
is mindful to review the Island’s needs, before
agreeing to any User Agreement extension.
Time is allowed for questions, feedback and

NEWS FROM MANX TELECOM
Open some Manx Telecom magic
this Christmas
Self healing is the ultimate act of self-love. Many are
conditioned to thinking how selfish that is, but if we do not
respect and honour ourselves, who will?
What have we got left for others?
Healing implies that something needs to be set right. In a world
where stress and anxiety is increasingly effecting our lives, it
is essential we have ‘my time ‘ to recentre, restore and ground
ourselves, in order to flourish.
The MNHC offers a variety of therapies and workshops to do
just that, aided by qualified therapists and healers.
With Christmas on the horizon, why not value the true
sacredness of the time of year where the Light is reborn and the
opportunity comes to reflect this in our lives and those around
us. Gratitude for what we do have is sustaining and embracing.
Enjoy it!
November programme includes:
Therapies:
Hot Stone: Warm stones gently massage the body to promote
relaxation as well as eliminating negative energy from the body,
mind and soul. Deeply nurturing.
Swedish Massage: Firm but gentle pressure used to improve
circulation, help reduce fluid retention and cellulite, relaxes tense
muscles and improves flexibility.
Pranic Healing: Prana means ‘life force’ energy and this healing
practice involves channelling colour prana into the energetic and
physical body, so that the healing process may be initiated. This
can be used not just for healing physical imbalances, but also
emotional or psychological problems and relationships.
Workshops:
Reiki: Introducing the ancient art of Reiki and how we can use
it in everyday life for the benefit of ourselves and others. This
workshop is aimed at those who have not yet discovered the full
benefits of Reiki. Even seasoned practitioners may find useful
new techniques for their work.
Dream Therapy: which will include learning about the variety
of dreams which can provide valuable guidance for healing, self
development and dream recall technique. Includes meditation CDs
December programme includes the following therapies:
CranioSacral Therapy: which gently releases deeply held
patterns of dis-ease which have accumulated physically and
psychologically from injury and illness, and held in the body
tissues leading to ill-health and dysfunction.
BodyTalk: reconnects the lines of communication within
the body’s internal systems so that they can operate as nature
intended them to and accelerate the healing process.
As well as taster therapy sessions available at £15 and
bookable in advance, one can drop in between 1.30 – 4
pm on Saturdays for energy healing (donations for this go
towards the running of the centre).
For full information visit the Manx Natural Healing Centre
Facebook page or call Chris on 393735 – or call in and see us.

for a donation.

Farmers' Markets
A Good Place To Start
The long hot summer days are now long gone and
have been replaced with the near normal Isle of
Man weather - extremely wet and windy! And with
this change of weather the IOMFM stallholders
were blown headlong into preparations for the
Christmas season. It is a heartening fact that the
popularity of the Farmers' Markets never waivers
and the invites keep rolling in for us to attend a
wide variety of events on top of our four regular
markets.
We are always willing to welcome new traders who
wish to showcase their local produce or products.
Some traders who started out at the Farmers'
Markets have taken their businesses onto the next
level. Some choose to continue trading at the
markets, some found it difficult to juggle trading
with us and their increased volume of orders, but
still take the time to credit us with the help we
provided for them on the way up the ladder. The
run up to Christmas is one of the best times for
any trader to showcase any of their existing or new
lines, and for customers to place their orders safe
in the knowledge that delivery will be guaranteed in
time for the festive period.
Regardless of the weather the IOMFM traders
endeavour to make sure that they get to the
marketplace. Ensuring the freshness of their
produce is of paramount importance. These
artisans take immense pride in their products and,
along with the traceability of all produce available
at the Farmers' Markets,
consumers should
make them their
number one
stop to shop.!

Smartphones and tablet devices make great Christmas gifts,
especially for our tech-savvy generation of children and
grandchildren. Here’s a guide to the latest gadgets and technology
which will be on many wish lists this year.
4G for FREE!
4G is the latest mobile broadband network which makes it much
easier and quicker to surf the internet, upload and download emails,
photos and videos, get the latest online news, FaceTime with family
and much more! Since we launched the Island’s first (and, to date,
only) 4G network last July, there has been a massive rush from
customers who want to be among the first to enjoy superfast mobile
broadband on the Island, and with 95% population coverage, it
is easy to see why so many are jumping on board. 4G is currently
only available to pay monthly mobile customers, however, in early
2015 we will be opening up the service for pay as you go customers
too. If you’re looking for that special gift for a friend or family
member who would be delighted to receive a new mobile handset,
then a 4G ready pay as you go handset could be the perfect present
this Christmas, starting at £139. We also have a fantastic range of
FREE 4G ready smartphones when you sign up to a pay monthly
smartphone tariff, from only £25 per month. If you’re not looking
for 4G speeds, pay as you go smartphones start from just £69 when
you purchase a £20 top-up in-store.
Pay as you go gifts
Pay as you go handsets are a great way to manage mobile phone
costs, especially if you don’t use your mobile that often and for
those who may be wanting to treat their son, daughter or grandchild.
Technology has moved on so much that smartphones are now
packed with the latest features without breaking the bank. The
fantastic Samsung Galaxy Young 2 is just £69, and if your budget
stretches a little further the Nokia Lumia 530 (£89), LG L7 II
(£119), and Sony Xperia E3 (£139) also make great gifts. All of
these smartphones boast minimum specs of a 4-inch screen, 4
megapixel camera and 4 gigabytes of storage, so there is no need to
compromise on quality.
Ultima broadband – more fun for all the family
With so many couples and families using a range of smartphones,
tablets, laptops and internet-enabled TVs, the demand on
broadband capacity in the home is increasing all the time. To
make the most of all of these devices at home requires superfast
broadband, and that’s why Manx Telecom’s Ultima is ideal, as it
offers superfast upload and download speeds, so you can enjoy
watching that video cooking guide or stream your favourite
programme in High Definition, whilst another family member is
downloading a new album or ebook. Ultima comes in four data
packages, and there are no up-front costs, as each one comes with a
free router and free installation*.
Get a FREE tablet worth £149!
Manx Telecom is giving away a fantastic LG tablet to every
customer who renews or signs-up to both Ultima broadband AND
4G as a pay monthly customer* this Christmas. The LG GPAD
7-inch tablet is WiFi enabled, perfect for using at home yourself, or
giving as a Christmas gift!
These are just some of the treats we have on offer this
Christmas, so pop into our Strand Street store and you’ll
also find lots of phone and tablet
accessories, top-up vouchers and
more, which make great stocking
fillers. Alternatively visit our website
www.manxtelecom.com/christmas
Here’s wishing all 'My Time Isle of
Man' readers a Happy Christmas
from everyone at Manx Telecom.

Guitar Works
what’s on
EVERY Tuesday I have the privilege
of running a not-for-profit guitar group
based in Onchan for people who have, or
have had, mental health problems.
Below is a guide to what is going on – on the Island.
Where possible the information is verified but things DO
change so please ring to verify details.
If you know of other groups or clubs that would like to be
listed (normally for free), just email Amy at
[email protected]
The group, which started back in January, is known as
GuitarWorks. It takes place at the Archibald Knox pub meeting
room from 3.45pm for an hour.
There are a few reasons why I decided to start up the group.
Firstly, before GuitarWorks, I used to run a guitar group at what
was formerly the Star Club in Douglas. This group came to an
end, but I could see the positive impact it had on those who
attended.
So, with the support of a couple of members of that previous
group, I decided to form a new group open to anyone of any
experience on the instrument.
Unfortunately, I have had experiences of mental health problems
myself. I have suffered episodes of depression and I know
how incredibly difficult it is. That’s why how the group is run
is important. Every single person who attends the group is as
important as the next. It doesn’t matter how much experience
someone has on the guitar – music is not a competition. The
group belongs to everyone.
There is a fantastic friendly atmosphere
at the sessions and I am delighted with it.
I have met some lovely people who have
become friends as a result.
My aim is for everyone to get something out of each session
and the emphasis is very much on a nice, relaxing hour of
good company and good music.
Anyone can just turn up at the Archibald Knox but it might
be best to email me on [email protected] or
call me on 204320 just to check that the group is on that week
(it will be on unless I am on holiday). There is a suggested
donation of £2 which goes towards the running costs.
The group is just one of a number of regular sessions I do.
I also hold general guitar tuition groups in Douglas, Ramsey
and Port St Mary, in addition to holding many private lessons
across the Island.
I also regularly attend Isle of Man Prison at Jurby where I am
the voluntary guitar tutor. I see music as a positive thing that
absolutely anyone can become involved in. It is something
where age and background do not matter one bit. I believe
everyone is musical and has the ability to play an instrument
providing they are willing to put in the practice.

I also have the privilege of going into Victoria House nursery
in Douglas every week where I play guitar and sing songs with
the children.
Again this is another highlight of my working week. The
children never, ever fail to make me smile. There is such a
wonderful mix of personalities and last year the children and I
wrote a song together, 'Why We Love Nursery'.
Occasionally I also organise special events. In February, this
year, I held a 'sold out' charity evening to celebrate the acoustic
guitar. It took place at the Erin Arts Centre in Port Erin and
featured a number of Isle of Man musicians. We raised £1,000
for the Manx mental health charity the Service Users’ Network
and £475 towards the running of the GuitarWorks guitar
group.
In May I brought two great blues guitar players to the Isle of
Man – Michael Messer and Ed Genis.
Michael is one of the greatest slide guitar players in the world
and in addition to a fantastic sell out concert at the Institute in
Laxey, Michael and Ed also gave two brilliant guitar workshops
at the Northern Lights Community Centre in Ramsey.
Looking ahead, I will be playing a solo concert at the Erin Arts
Centre on Saturday, February 28 2015. Tickets are £8 and are
available online from www.etickets.im/jg or by emailing or
phoning me on the contact details I mentioned earlier. It will be
a night of country blues and I have offered my guitar students
the chance to open the show for me.
*John Gregory is a member of the Registry of Guitar
Tutors and teaches guitar full time six days a week. His

As a guitar tutor it is not surprising that music is a very important
part of my life. It is my absolute passion. But this group is so
much more than just improving people’s technique on the guitar.
The social aspect is just as vital (we all have a couple of cups of
tea and coffee) and the sheer joy of making music with other
people is a fine way to spend an hour.

Inhaler technique
There are lots of different styles of inhalers on the
pharmaceutical market, which are prescribed for various
breathing disorders. When was the last time you had a review
of your inhaler technique? Do you inhale too forcefully from a
metered dose inhaler (press while inhaling), causing most of
the medication to end up in your stomach? Do you struggle to
trigger a dose from a dry powder inhaler (inhaler triggers the
dose in response to inhalation)? Are you unsure what benefit
there is in using a spacer device, or even what a spacer device
is? Did you know that most patients could improve their
inhaler technique, resulting in an improved
response to the medication? Your local
pharmacist is available to assist with
your inhaler technique, to ensure you are
getting the most out of your inhaler.

All in Order
This is the second in a series of articles written by
Maria Bridson of All in Order.
In the last article I outlined why it was a good idea to
prepare a will. In this article I summarise two Manx
cases which show why it is a good idea to have your
will professionally prepared by an Advocate.
Mrs Lilian Squire was a widow with no living relatives who
prepared her own will without professional assistance. She
left her bungalow and her bank accounts to the Church of
England Pensions Board, however, because of how she
had drafted her will, she did not deal with some items in
her estate, mainly some Shares and some War Stock. Her
executors had to apply to the Manx Court for it to decide
whether Mrs Squire had died partially intestate. If so, the
Shares and the War Stock would pass via the intestacy rules
to the Treasury. The Deemster decided that Mrs Squire’s will
contained a clerical error which could be rectified to carry
out her intentions. The result was that the Shares and the
War Stock could pass to the charity and not to the Treasury.
However, the legal fees for bringing the case were deducted
from the amount the charity received.
Another case in which executors had to seek the Manx
Court’s direction was the 2008 case of Mrs Salt. To
summarise, Mrs Salt left shares in her residuary estate to
“The British Legion” and “The Anti-Vivisection Society”.
Unfortunately, neither of these bodies existed in law because
their names were slightly wrong. After legal argument,
the Deemster ruled that The Royal British Legion and the
National Anti-Vivisection League could each receive a part
share in the estate but, again, the costs of the proceedings
were deducted from the amounts these charities received.
These cases are just two of the many cases which illustrate
that although writing a will can seem easy enough, the law
around wills can be complex. When you make a homemade
will, you risk making mistakes, either in drafting the will to
fulfill your intentions, or complying with the rules governing
the execution of wills.
All in Order is an advice and organising service
which helps people organise their affairs to
protect their family from stress, expense and
disagreements after they die.
If you would like more information about the All in Order
service contact Maria Bridson at [email protected]
or 477709. www.allinorder.co.im
The information contained in this article is general information relating
to the law and is not legal advice.

My Time
Isle of Man
Christmas is a-coming and like most parents (even
though there are only three of us) I am already
planning.
We go across this year, to see my parents (both of whom are
in their 80’s) and have Christmas with them. My son gets to see
his grandparents and has his first ‘adult’ Christmas – being that
he’s a VERY OLD 18 year old now; but we will still have some
traditions (til I’m even older and grayer) like reading ‘Twas’ the
Night before Christmas” on Christmas Eve. I believe in such
things; ‘traditions’ I mean. I like to think that my son will carry
on with these with his ‘brood’ and that when I am in my dotage,
I will be reminded of the warmth that family traditions bring.
This year I entered my 5th Decade … and I did it in style. A
trip to my parents ‘homeland’ of the US; visiting the capitol
and enjoying the vast array of history, cramming as much
as we could in to a few short days. Then, celebrating with a
wonderful party, with friends from here and across; and family
from both sides of the Irish Sea. I made small trips away to see
family; to my sisters in France (she turned 60 this year); and
to see my parents.… and I loved the sheer feeling of love and
happiness.
After all, happiness is something we all strive
for. I reached some goals this year, but I
have set myself many more!!! I aim to be even
happier; not with riches and ‘things’, but
with achievements. I want to help my son to
achieve what he desires; I want to be the best
mum, wife and daughter that I can be; the
best friend that I can be; the best citizen that I
can be; and I don’t want to look back in years
to come when I am ‘dreaming of what was’
and think ’if only I’d….”
Being Over 50 is not
about slowing down for
me. Some doors will
close (of course they will)
but my life is not lessened
through age; if anything
it’s enriched through the
experience I bring to the
endeavours I aim for in
years to come.

The University of the Third Age - Isle of Man has
been established for almost three years and is
increasing in popularity all the time. It is, however,
a global organisation with over 320,000 members
in the UK alone.
The U3A encourages local groups of like-minded
people to meet and share their skills with others. This
informal learning body is open to anyone not in full
time employment. It is proving to be a very progressive
organisation and many of the groups provide a challenge,
encouraging brain stimulation. It has been proved that as
we ‘mature’ we accumulate knowledge and other abilities,
particularly in vocabulary and general knowledge, therefore
further motivation can be offered by joining the U3A.
The many groups cater for different tastes, but it is
advisable to see the full list by consulting the website
u3asites.org.uk/isle-of-man. It only costs £15.00 to
join the U3A Isle of Man so is not beyond most people’s
pockets. Members can then join as many groups at they
wish. Some groups make a small charge whilst others are
free. The Wearable Art group is great at encouraging the
creation of innovative styles and the Writing for Pleasure
group gives members the opportunity to discuss projects
and assist each other through discussion. The Book Club
members enjoy reading a set book and then discussing it
over lunch or a drink with their fellow group members.
There are Recreational groups, Tai Chi, the Natural World,
History, Arts and Crafts and Philosophy, just to mention a
few. The choice is wonderful and the committee work very
hard to keep introducing new things.
The monthly network meetings are held at St. Johns Mill,
St. Johns and afterwards, many members enjoy afternoon
tea. We often have speakers at the network meetings. On
Thursday 20th November, Liam O’Neil will give a talk on
Archibald Knox, our own celebrated artist and craftsman,
who died in 1933, with his art objects still being very much
in demand.
