New user-friendly
Certificate Catalogue
A new version of Normpack’s Certificate Catalogue is
now being published. The catalogue is an aid for those
who are looking for certified materials, articles and
packaging that will come into contact with food. In the
new version everything is accessible via inputs adapted
for users, improved searchability and links direct to
suppliers.

The trade and industry group Normpack
provides support for companies within
the relatively complex legislation relating to materials that come into contact
with foodstuffs. Normpack’s Certificate
Catalogue is a unique specification for
those who are looking for products that
comply with the legislation. The catalogue can also be used to check whether
a company has a valid certificate and
when it is due to expire. It is also a support for public procurement. Recently,
the Swedish Competition Authority
introduced a direct link from its website
to the catalogue regarding documentation for quality assurance.

logue has been developed with improved
search options for food producers and
others who are looking for material and
packaging that will be in contact with
food. In practice this means that the
choice can be made on the start page to
search both by packaging type and by
food type by applicable legislation, i.e.
the legislation for foodstuffs as well as
the legislation for food contact material.
Adapting the catalogue to users in this
way means that Normpack has provides
a bridge between food companies and
packaging companies.
“Through improving searchability
and also ”talking the food producers’
language” we are hoping that the catalogue will function better as an initial
search path. It will subsequently be easy
to link from the catalogue to the supplier’s website”, says Ann Lorentzon,
who is responsible for the secretariat at
Innventia.
Normpack is a self-assessment system
and certification body which creates the
right conditions for safety and trust.
Having materials or products certified
by Normpack means that Normpack’s
secretariat has carried out third party
reviews to ensure that valid legislation is
met through carrying out necessary tests
and that other, frequently confidential,
data is available. The idea behind the
self-assessment system is that those companies that own and sell the product,
and that thereby have product responsibility, will have access to expertise to
evaluate their products before they put
them on the market. Consumers can
therefore be confident about packaging

Innventia will release its third
Global Outlook Report in 2016:
“A Cellulose-Based Society”. The
report will examine trends and
driving forces affecting the role
of the forest industry in a future
featuring innovative renewable
materials based on cellulose that
are used with brand new business
models.
In March this year, Innventia started the
“A Cellulose-Based Society” project. We
believe that a circular bioeconomy in the
society of the future will be largely based
on cellulose. Cellulose is nature’s most
common building block. It is the biggest constituent part in the cell walls of
plants, and is also present in certain bacteria, fungi, algae and aquatic organisms.
The forest industry has long been working with resource-effective processes for
the large-scale manufacture of products
that form the basis of today’s society.
Paper is part of everyone’s everyday lives,
in the form of packaging materials and
tissue paper, and as a means of support
for interaction between people, learning,
creativity and innovation. Long before
the advent of industrial papermaking,
people from all cultures were using cellulose as a construction material and to
heat their homes.
The issue of climate change is one of
the biggest challenges of our time, and
significant research resources are therefore being invested in replacing old fossil
materials with renewable alternatives.
The need for a shift towards a more sustainable society is becoming ever clearer,
and demand for bio-based innovations is
experiencing strong growth.
The route to the future needs to be
mapped, showing both the opportunities and the challenges faced by society
along the way. In the cellulose-based
economy, cellulose is the key molecule in
the processing chain. But the chain also
includes responsible forestry and making
use of side streams such as refining lignin
and hemicellulose in all their forms.
The project will create a road map
for the new cellulose-based bioeconomy,
by investigating and describing current
trends and driving forces, interviewing
experts and consumers, and speaking
with players and partners globally. The
results will be presented in an Innventia
Global Outlook report in 2016.

Here at Innventia, as described on the
previous page, we believe that a circular
bioeconomy in the future will be largely
based on cellulose. And faster progress
needs to be made towards this future
society. Global challenges – such as the
fact that Earth Overshoot Day, the day
in the year when we have consumed
what the planet can produce during a
year, comes earlier each year, falling on
19 August in 2014 – require sustainable
solutions that are not limited by future
development. We need to be able to live
on what one planet Earth produces. At
Innventia, we call this “The one vision”.
In order to achieve this one vision,
society must become circular. In such
a society, there is no waste: everything
is streams of materials or energy, a kind
of zero vision. Innventia has now been
commissioned by the Swedish Energy
Agency to lead the work involved in
putting together a strategic innovation
agenda for a waste-free city. Project
coordinator Mikael Lindström explains:
“There is a great deal of interest,
both from industry and from society.
Almost 300 businesses have expressed
an interest in being involved so far. And
this is important. The overall picture of
resource consumption must be included
in the overall picture of town planning.

The consortium even includes game
developers. Perhaps we can create a
SimCity in which everyone can get an
interactive insight into the consequences
of their actions.”
Mikael believes that everything in
society should be reusable in some form,
either through a deposit system or by
being converted into energy. This means
that we need to understand which parts
of the flow cannot be combined in order
to facilitate the maximum use of our
resources. It is thus also a question of
which materials we will allow in the
waste-free society. One concept that
Mikael often returns to is that of hierarchical design, which he explains using
the example of materials development at
Innventia:
“First we design the components
needed in the material, i.e. fibres, binders, polymers, pigments, flame-proofing
agents, etc. Then we design the material
by mixing and processing the components to give them the desired properties
in the product created by a designer during the product design process. When
a product can no longer be used, it’s a
matter of recycling the individual components, fibres, plastics, pigments, etc.
In the waste-free society, we therefore
see a limited number of components
that can be combined and separated.
Everything must be planned for the
available resources.”
When everything is a resource, we
will start talking about resource management instead of waste management.
For example, energy is a service that can
be delivered from food packaging once it
has done its job of protecting the product, thereby reducing food wastage.

order to determine what is precipitated, where
in the process and at what dryness.
New reactor at Innventia to
study precipitations
One of the major problems faced by the
forest industry is that of precipitation
and scale formation in evaporation.
The most common salts precipitating in
black liquor evaporators are burkeite and
(sodium sulphate) dicarbonate; if formed
on heat transfer surfaces, these precipitates can act as insulation and thus significantly increase energy consumption
in the evaporation plant. When this happens, the evaporation must be stopped
or some of the units bypassed in order
to flush them clean. Stopping the plant
involves significant costs. It is therefore

of the utmost value to understand how,
where and when deposits are formed,
and thus reduce the number of instances
of downtime.
Innventia’s new high-pressure reactor
is a valuable resource in this work. Here,
trials can be carried out on the plant’s
black liquor under conditions close to
those in actual evaporators. Anna Jensen
explains:
“We can take mill liquors at different levels of dry substance and then
evaporate them further in the reactor to
achieve higher levels of dryness. Since
we can carry out sampling during evaporation without stopping the process or
changing the reactor pressure, we can
monitor the process very closely. We can
analyse both black liquor and the solids
formed in it in order to determine what
is precipitated, where in the process and
at what dryness.
“By sampling and observing the
chemistry in different positions, we can
help the mill and suggest changes. Soon,
we’ll also be able to observe the particle
formation using a new laser instrument.

to be made within the process, we can
carry out test evaporation in our reactor
before the mill decides to invest in those
changes,” says Åsa.
She cites examples such as looking at a
new raw material or considering switching the production from conventional
to dissolving pulp. Both these changes
affect the content of black liquor.
“The same is true if a plant implements the LignoBoost process.* With
the new reactor, we can study changes in
the evaporation when lignin-lean liquor
is returned to the evaporation process.”
Anna and Åsa agree that the equipment could have more applications than
the evaporation trials carried out to date.
“There are many other reactions in
the recovery process that take place
under pressure and at high temperatures,
such as causticisation, that we could
examine,” concludes Åsa. “The reactor
is designed to operate at temperatures of
up to 250 degrees and pressure of up to
69 bars. We’re convinced that our reactor will benefit our customers.” thing starts to precipitate, without a

The relationship between sulphate
and carbonate ions in the black liquor
has a significant impact on what kind of
salt is formed in it, and at what point.
Using the reactor, different process strategies, as well as recycling of ESP-dust
from the recovery boiler or spent liquor
from tall oil plant, etc. can be studied in
order to verify this dependence.

Replicating
what happens
in the plant
One company that is familiar with
Innventia’s reactor and has been on
board since the first trials is Stora Enso.
This cooperation stretches back several
years, and has helped the company to
understand more about various problem
substances within the process. Maria
Björk and Rickard Wadsborn see both
the equipment and Innventia’s expertise
as key factors.
“Having access to the right equipment
is extremely important,” says Rickard.
“This is an excellent example of how
Innventia has collaborated with the supplier to design equipment well so that it
is better able to assist the industry. This
reactor brings us very close to being able
to predict what will happen in our plant.
The ability to look inside existing apparatus that we normally only open once a
year is a real step along the way.”
“By being able to replicate what happens in the plant, we can also prevent
any problems such as precipitation and
clogging,” adds Maria. “Here, we can
observe and monitor the process, and
we can find out why precipitations occur
and how we can get round the problem.”
Their aim is to be able to take samples
under conditions that resemble operating conditions, without experiencing
losses or compromising on temperature
and time factors. They have succeeded in
obtaining previously unobtainable data,
which has had a real impact on their
understanding. So, too, has their interaction with Innventia’s experts. Rickard
explains:
“Carrying out experiments like these
in the lab isn’t entirely simple. This is
an extremely sensitive system, and you
need to know what you’re doing. For
example, hitting a specific figure in an

experiment at 138 degrees! There were
times when Anna exceeded everyone’s
expectations – including her own – by
obtaining data in a way that hadn’t been
done before.”
Maria also believes that the dialogue
between Stora Enso and Innventia with
its mutual commitment is a success factor.
“We’ve not only used Innventia as a
consultant – they’ve also been more like
a discussion partner. That’s probably
one of the reasons why the results have
ultimately been so useful.”

A tool for new strategies
Åsa Samuelsson is responsible for
the Energy & Mill Systems group at
Innventia. She says that one of the
group’s most important roles is to help
the mill with both problem-solving and
evaluating any future process changes.
With the right equipment in the laboratory, simulation tools and researchers’
expertise, it is possible to predict what
will happen within the process, including the economic effects of the change.
The new reactor will be an important
part of this work.

Within the programme area “The modern kraft pulp fibre line” issues such as non-process
elements will be looked into in order to increase the effectiveness of the pulp mill. More efficient
and sustainable kraft pulp mill operations will be required in the near future in order to compete
successfully with other material resources. This programme area aims at improv­ing the process
economy and pulp properties, as well as the availability and capacity in the recovery cycle.
Innventia Research Programme 2015–2017, comprising altogether nine programme areas and
separate projects, addresses many of the challenges and opportunities that the industry is facing.
The work carried out within the programme is focused on improving the existing products and
processes as well as demonstrating new opportunities with novel materials, chemicals, and products.
By working together in pre-competitive projects we get leverage by joining forces and better
success in public funding.

On our mind
The discussion on the transformation into a society based on supply
of renewable products and energy
cannot go unnoticed in today’s
debate. As a researcher and project
manager, I have seen how this signi­
ficant interest results in numerous
requests for new projects and new
business ideas. Two promising areas
involve producing chemicals and
fuels from bio-based raw materials.
With the pulp and paper industry’s
extensive experience of handling
and processing of biomass raw
material, they have beneficial opportunities to become an important
contributor in this area.

Innventia is coordinating a unique
collaboration project that will lead
to less food waste. Resourceefficient packaging solutions that
work throughout the value chain,
from food and packaging producer
to consumer, will contribute towards
a reduction in wasted resources.

Bioeconomy in focus
One currently ongoing project is looking
at intermediary biofuels, and how the
pulp mill can take in biomass raw material, process and upgrade them and send
them to other industries for final upgrading and production of a final product.
The role of the pulp mill will then be
to handle the raw biomass and process it
into a form that is simpler to transport
and upgrade. The benefit would be that
the existing infrastructure and utility
systems in the pulp mill for handling of
biomass is utilised with minor additional
investments and that the overall costs
and energy requirements for transporting biomass raw materials over long
distances are reduced. There are various types of intermediaries that may be
worth examining and that could meet
the needs of many industries, including everything from the iron and steel
industry to chemical manufacturers and
oil refining industry.
Much of what is currently being
researched involves using lignin from the
pulp mill for chemicals and energy raw
materials, and for transportation fuels.
Developments have been investigated
for many years and Innventia has been
closely involved in this process. As the
implementation phase approaches, we
can support the industry by verifying
the performance of the processes and
the new products that are developed.
The challenge lies in ensuring high uti-

lisation of raw materials to obtain a high
yield while reducing the loss of energy
or materials and a high availability in the
production throughout the processes.
Parallel to these activities focusing on
future businesses, we are also working
with how to optimise today’s processes financially using various simulation
tools. One area that is of particularly
interest currently is model-based performance monitoring which involves
calculating various Key Performance
Indicators based on continuous analysis of normal operation data. These
Indicators are used for measuring how
a process is currently performing compared with optimal operation and – by
extension – to make an economic evaluation based on this information. In this
way, it is possible to generate a picture of
how factors such as different raw materials, operating settings and maintenance
affect operations so that production can
be maximised and maintenance and
operating costs minimised. The advantages are early detection of reduced
efficiency, support for proactive maintenance, greater decision-making support
for operators and process engineers and
the creation of an information database
to help with trouble shooting and operational planning. Our aim is to work with
developing tools for the industry for this
and visualising the results so that the
results are easier and faster to interpret.
Working with issues of an everyday nature in customer-focused projects enables a greater and an essential
understanding of the mill’s operational
situation. This could involve helping
to resolve various operational problems
relating to the equipment and processes
involved in the mill’s energy supply. By
combining a devotion to future-focused
activities with real-time practical issues,
researchers gain from better insight of
the technology that will result improvements in processes, new products and an
increased profitable business. contact:

Up to 50 percent of all food that is
produced is either destroyed or thrown
away. Food waste refers to unnecessary
food waste, such as food that could have
been eaten if it had been dealt with
differently. According to the Swedish
Environmental Protection Agency,
roughly a million tonnes of food is
thrown away each year in Sweden, with
households accounting for the majority
of this. Food waste could be reduced
with packaging that protects its contents
and helps consumers to handle products
in the best way.
The “Packaging systems for reduced
food waste” project will develop innovative new packaging solutions to reduce
food waste, throughout the value chain
from food producer to consumer. The
solutions will be optimised at system
level so that no part of the chain is optimised at the expense of any other part.
In order to take an overall approach,

Karlstad University, BillerudKorsnäs, Electrolux,
Orkla, Santa Maria, Axfood, Pacsystem, Trioplast,
Flextrus, Arta Plast, the Swedish Environmental
Protection Agency, Stockholm Consumer
Cooperative Society, Ragn-Sells and SP Technical
Research Institute of Sweden. VINNOVA is providing SEK 4.7 million of support for the two-year
project, with the participating companies matching
this funding.

Innventia has brought together a unique
consortium with participants from the
entire value chain: materials and packaging producers, food producers, the convenience goods trade, authorities, institutions and universities (headed up by
Karlstad University’s Helén Williams),
recycling companies and Stockholm
Consumer Cooperative Society. It transpired at the workshop arranged last year
during the introductory phase – stage
one of VINNOVA’s Challenge-Driven
Innovation programme – that many
players lacked sufficient knowledge and
awareness of other parts of the chain.
As the project enters stage two, mapping waste and the potential for improvement throughout the value chain will
be an important part of the process.
Ethnographical consumer studies will be
carried out as part of this. These studies
will show how food is dealt with in the
home, and will highlight opportunities
for packaging improvements in order to
protect the product, communicate and
make the best use of resources.
Three different prototypes will be
created in partnership with three food
producers, as concrete examples of
how packaging can contribute towards
increased use and make the food and
packaging industries more resourceeffective. These prototypes are being
developed to build up knowledge that
can also be applied to completely different products. Since two thirds of all
packaging is used within the food and
drink industry, the results will affect
millions of users in the long term. For
the companies taking part in the project,
the new, more effective packaging will
also be a concrete result in their efforts
to achieve sustainable development that
can also strengthen their brands.
“Producing prototypes gives companies physical examples that they can
show,” says project manager Kristina

Lösningarna ska optimeras på systemnivå
så att ingen del av kedjan optimeras på
bekostnad av någon annan del. För att
ta detta helhetsgrepp har Innventia samlat ett unikt konsortium med deltagare
längs hela kedjan. Tillsammans med tre
livsmedelsproducenter kommer tre olika
prototyper att tas fram som konkreta
exempel på hur förpackningen både kan
bidra till ökat utnyttjande och göra livsmedels- och förpackningsindustrin mer
resurseffektiv.

New user-friendly
Certificate Catalogue
A new version of Normpack’s Certificate Catalogue is
now being published. The catalogue is an aid for those
who are looking for certified materials, articles and
packaging that will come into contact with food. In the
new version everything is accessible via inputs adapted
for users, improved searchability and links direct to
suppliers.

The trade and industry group Normpack
provides support for companies within
the relatively complex legislation relating to materials that come into contact
with foodstuffs. Normpack’s Certificate
Catalogue is a unique specification for
those who are looking for products that
comply with the legislation. The catalogue can also be used to check whether
a company has a valid certificate and
when it is due to expire. It is also a support for public procurement. Recently,
the Swedish Competition Authority
introduced a direct link from its website
to the catalogue regarding documentation for quality assurance.

choice can be made on the start page to
search both by packaging type and by
food type by applicable legislation, i.e.
the legislation for foodstuffs as well as
the legislation for food contact material.
Adapting the catalogue to users in this
way means that Normpack has provides
a bridge between food companies and
packaging companies.

and also ”talking the food producers’
language” we are hoping that the catalogue will function better as an initial
search path. It will subsequently be easy
to link from the catalogue to the supplier’s website”, says Ann Lorentzon,
who is responsible for the secretariat at
Innventia.
Normpack is a self-assessment system
and certification body which creates the
right conditions for safety and trust.
Having materials or products certified
by Normpack means that Normpack’s
secretariat has carried out third party
reviews to ensure that valid legislation is
met through carrying out necessary tests
and that other, frequently confidential,
data is available. The idea behind the
self-assessment system is that those companies that own and sell the product,
and that thereby have product responsibility, will have access to expertise to
evaluate their products before they put
them on the market. Consumers can
therefore be confident about packaging
