Pleasant Cemetery One poet described cemeteries as “a touching and beautiful history, written in family burial plots, in mounded graves, in sculptured and inscribed monuments.” The cemetery tells the story of the past. The Village accepted ownership of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in January 2011 and is proud of its important caretaker role. Volunteers work each spring and fall, some trimming trees and shrubs to maintain the perimeter of the cemetery, others weeding and planting the many garden areas within the cemetery to maintain the beauty of the cemetery. The former hitching post area is now defined with beautiful rose bushes, day lilies and phlox. The American Legion Brooks Shepard Post #765 decorates all of the headstones of the veterans buried in the cemetery with geraniums and American flags each year. Mt. Pleasant Cemetery was established in 1866 high up on the hill, with entrances on Summit Street and Orchard Street. The cemetery was designed by William Webster of Rochester in 1865 in the Victorian fashion. Pathways still wind through the plots, and there are many trees that provide shady spots for nearby benches which embrace the simple serene beauty of the grounds. Names of prominent families of the Village are found throughout the cemetery: Deland, Knapp, Snow, Baird, Potter. Well-known artist Carl Peters of Fairport is buried in the northeast section near the exit. There is a soldier’s monument erected in 1866 to honor the 30 or so Civil War soldiers from Fairport. If you would like to become a volunteer, please contact the Village clerk’s office at (585) 223-0313. Mayor, Frederick H. May Deputy Mayor, H. Kevin Clark Trustee, Kenneth G. Rohr Trustee, Timothy J. Three large projects are either currently being worked on or are in the planning stages. We are fortunate that work on Fairport Village Landing is underway, a 48-unit condo project is being proposed for 15 Parker St. and a 71-unit market rate senior apartment complex with a proposed location east of Durant Place. The Building Innovation Group out of East Rochester was selected to do the work, which began in mid-September with removal of asbestos on the roof structure. The work is expected to be completed by Veterans Day in November. The Fairport Village Landing is getting a facelift, including: new Hardiplank clapboard/ shingle siding, trim repairs, exterior painting, new doors, repairs to roofing, concrete, trim, and other minor changes. Interior work will include painting, new carpeting, new bathrooms and improvements to the elevator car. When completed, the Village Landing will be a more attractive asset on Main Street. Soon the library will temporarily relocate while making improvements to its permanent location. Last May we voted to support the renovations for a much-needed update – the last improvements were 19 years ago. Renovations will begin in December and continue for about nine months while major improvements are made to its infrastructure, including upgrades to lighting, spacial layout, carpeting, windows, and a new entrance off Kennelley Park. Although it will be strange to have the library temporarily relocated, the result will be a more inviting environment. The Village’s Office of Community + Economic Development is serving as the project manager. The crew from Fairport’s Department of Public Works did removals and demolition, and Fairport Electric provided panels and service to the site. SEI Design developed the construction documents and LeChase is the project’s advisor. F O O The “Residences at Canalside” at 15 Parker St., will consist of 48 condo units at the former Department of Public Works site. The five-story building will have covered parking on the first level and four floors of living space above. The units will vary from about 1,200 square feet to 2,250 square feet. Although the design has not been finalized, the building mass has been defined. The Reidman Development Corporation is the developer. An Incentive Zoning application, requesting density relief, is currently before the Village Board. According to our 2007 Comprehensive Plan, this is a desirable usage of the 2.8 acre site located just south of the Erie Canal and adjacent to the new promenade completed last year in anticipation of this area being developed. The newest housing proposal is located off High Street between Durant Place, Turk Hill Road and the Rose Hollow senior living complex. This proposal is for a two- to three-story building consisting of 71 market rate senior one- or two-bedroom apartments. This development will be rentals available to individuals over 55 years of age. Because this proposal is in the very early stages, it will continue to define itself. Like the Residences at Canalside, both projects will offer housing that research indicates the village needs and can sustain. R P I feel we are very fortunate to have the above mentioned additions coming to our village. These two housing proposals offer alternative living options for individuals who want to live in our great village without the responsibilities of owning house. An additional benefit to the village and its residents is that the tax base will be strengthened. I look forward to the completion of the improvements to Village Landing and these two housing opportunities. Fritz May, Mayor Take Advantage of Farmers’ Market Before it Closes for Season Make sure you get another chance to enjoy the Fairport Farmers’ Market before its last date of the 2014 season. The Saturday morning event, held each week in the Village Landing parking lot, behind Bank of America, will close after Nov. 22nd. A variety of products are still available, including pumpkins, apples, baked goods, soap, crafts, and jams and jellies to name a few. And make sure to stop by the food cart with its hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches and more. Zoning Board: 4th Monday of every month, 7:00 pm Please join us on Saturday mornings between 7 a.m. and noon. Parking is available in the Village Landing lot, as well as on the street, and in the Packetts Landing lot across the street. May Halloween Parade Set for October 24 The Fairport Police Union/PBA will be hosting its annual Halloween Parade in the Village at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24. The parade begins at the Minerva Deland school parking lot and travels to Potter Place. Following the parade, the Fairport Police Union/PBA will be giving away complimentary candy bags, donuts and cider, and interacting with the kids. The Halloween parade is one of many community-based events sponsored by the Fairport Police Union/PBA. We look forward to seeing all the boys and girls in their best costumes at the 2014 Fairport Halloween parade. Leaves are Falling and Collections Begin Snow Removal Tips The Department of Public Works is collecting bulk leaf piles in October and, weather permitting, continuing through December. Bulk collection may be suspended and or delayed upon the first significant snowfall. As winter is quickly approaching, the Department of Public Works has several tips to assist with snow removal operations: DPW crews will make every attempt to pick up your leaves on the day of your scheduled garbage collection; however, during peak collection periods the collections days may vary. During these times crews start at the beginning of the route and continue until all leaves have been collected. This may result in your leaves being picked up a day early or late. To assist the DPW in leaf collection the following tips are offered: • All leaves must be placed in the tree lawn area for collection. should be placed in one pile parallel to the street in a • Leaves location Village equipment can access. do not place leaves near any obstructions such as trees, • Please street lights, etc. ensure that leaf piles are free of sticks, rocks and any • Please other debris that may damage leaf collection equipment. Small piles (less than 2 to 3 cans) should be placed in • containers. Small loose piles will not be collected. the spring, leaves should be placed in containers. • During Large piles will be picked up with a loader. • • • • • • • Please remember that there is no parking on Village streets from 3 to 7 a.m. Nov. 1 through April 1. Deputy Mayor, H. Kevin Clark Trustee, Kenneth G. Rohr Residents clearing snow from their sidewalks and driveways should move snow only to locations on their own property. Snow should not be shoveled or plowed onto neighbor’s properties, onto sidewalks, across the street, or left in the street. Homeowners should direct plow contractors to abide by the same rules. Village sidewalk plows will clear snow throughout the winter; please do not block public sidewalks. Trustee, Timothy J. Slisz Help out your mail carriers by keeping sidewalks clear of snow in front of homes and mailboxes. Assist the Fire Department, and keep your own family and neighbors safe, by keeping nearby hydrants clear of snow in the event of an emergency. Please remind children to stay away from snowplows and to not build tunnels into snowbanks. If you have any questions about snow removal, please call the Department of Public Works at (585) 223-9500.
