Character Counts at Park Village
By Ricardo Ceceña, Principal
Park Village continues to implement the character education
program, Character Counts!TM into our school community. This
program has helped to improve the climate of our school by
increasing awareness of personal behavior choices of our school
community. Character Counts!TM is a program that has been combined with
our everyday behavior expectations and academic curriculum.
The program is based on 6 pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect,
Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Throughout the year we
focus on a pillar every 4-6 weeks. Focusing on each pillar separately, students, staff and parents can really understand each pillar individually.
What do the pillars mean?
Trustworthiness is when a person who lives with integrity and honesty,
and they are reliable and loyal. In the classroom, students will tell the truth.
Respect is when a person lives by the Golden Rule. Students respect others, and are courteous, polite, and tolerant of one anothers’ differences. In
the classroom, students will use good manners, and will not use put-downs
towards others. Responsibility is when a person is accountable for their
actions and pursues excellence and self-control. In the classroom, students
will accept responsibility for their choices and accept the consequences of
their actions and will not make excuses. Fairness is when a person is fair
and just. They listen to others and are open to different viewpoints. In the
classroom, students will treat people equally and will not take advantage of
others. Caring is when a person is compassionate towards others. They
are kind, loving, and considerate. In the classroom, students will be empathic and kind to others, and will not be mean and insensitive. Citizenship is when a person acts as a good citizen. They share the load, help
their community, and respect authority and the law. In the classroom, students will play by the rules and will not make them up as they go.
Next week (October 23- 30) we will be highlighting all 6 pillars during Red
Ribbon/ Character Counts!TM Week. During our daily morning announcements I will be highlighting the pillar of the day and students will be asked
to show their support of the school and the pillars by wearing the color that
represents each pillar. Lastly, I’d like to call attention to the new PV Student,
Parent and Staff Character Counts!TM flyers that are attached to this week’s
Flash. I recommend that you review the student
and parent flyers with your child in preparation
of CC! Week. All classrooms on campus have
reviewed them with students and have posted
them as reminders to our collective commitment
in making Character Count! TM at Park Village.
See the box on the next page for the complete
schedule of CC! Color Days.

27th ANNUAL CROSS COUNTRY FUN RUN
We’re excited to have many 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders running in the
27th Annual One Mile Cross Country Fun Run this coming
Tuesday, October 21, at Mt. Carmel High School!
Run start times are as follows:
3rd Grade Boys 2:30pm / Girls 2:40pm
4th Grade Boys 2:50pm / Girls 3:00pm
5th Grade Boys 3:15pm / Girls 3:30pm
A reminder to parents that you are responsible for driving your child to the race. Please
make sure you allow enough time to pick your child up from school, park at the high school, find
the stadium, and check your child in for the race. The Mt. Carmel HS outdoor football stadium/
running track is located on the upper level from the school parking lot, on the opposite side from all
the school buildings. As you enter the stadium, look to the right (east stands). Bring your child to
the “Park Village Elementary” sign. Your child needs a label to run, and this is the only location it
will be available. Plan to arrive no later than 30 minutes BEFORE your child’s start time. They usually get over 800 students running for this event, therefore, plan accordingly.
3rd Grade Parents: 3rd grade runners will be granted an early dismissal at 1:15. Please come to
the school office to pick your child up at this time.
4th & 5th Grade Parents: 4th & 5th grade runners will have a regular 1:40 dismissal since their
races start a bit later.

Costume Parade
By Ricardo Ceceña, Principal
Park Village Elementary School is proud to announce its Annual Costume Parade, scheduled for Friday,
October 31 at 9:15 am on the back field/track. All children in grades Pre-K through 5 who wish to participate will parade in their costume around the track and then return to their classrooms. Children who
don’t want to wear their costume to school may bring them in a paper bag and change prior to the parade. Parents are welcome to join in the fun and costumes are encouraged. The best place for parents
to view the parade is anywhere along the side of the running track, since the entire school will be making
a parade lap around the track.
The Costume Parade is two weeks away; I know many of you are selecting costumes. Here at Park Village we are promoting a safe and friendly environment. Please remember to keep the following guidelines in mind when selecting a costume to wear for the parade:
 Avoid rubber masks. If a costume requires a mask, it may only be worn during the parade.
 Wear shoes. Safety regulations require students to wear shoes at all times.
 No weapons, blood or gore. We promote a safe and friendly environment at Park Village. Weapons,
blood and gore don’t support this philosophy. Toy guns, knives handcuffs, swords, nun chucks etc.
will be taken and returned at the end of the day. Any child with bloody make-up will have to remove
it.
 Costumes that portray violent movies/ TV (Scream,
Freddy Kruger, etc.) are not appropriate at school. Save
them for after school events and trick or treating.
 Display respect for other cultures. Stereotyping or ridi-
culing other races or cultures is unacceptable.
Thank you for following the guidelines. We have children
of all ages at Park Village and we want the day to be full
of smiles for all.
Now that you’ve submitted your entry – what next? We will advance our 30 winners to
the Palomar Council Level by November. Palomar Council will advance their selections
by December to the Regional Level. We’ll know who’s made it to state by January.
Stay tuned. We will have our own PVES Reflection Artists Gallery Showing sometime
in February where we will showcase all entries. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Reflections.

Peachjar Flyer Rack
Park Village has gone green with flyers. We have replaced the old-fashioned flyer rack with an online system
where flyers and notices are uploaded onto a site called Peachjar. Parents can view and receive alerts for new flyers.
Here is a list of flyers currently posted on the Peachjar website. New flyers are in red. Click on Peachjar and it will
take you to the Peachjar site where you can select a flyer and view more information. You may access flyers on
Peachjar at any time as a guest. Once you register for free as a member, you will receive new flyer notifications via
email and/or smartphone, depending on your desired settings. To post Enrichment flyers on Peachjar, contact
[email protected]. To post flyers for Our School, Parent Organizations, PUSD events and free Community
events, please email Sandi Oshiro at [email protected] and attach the flyer.
