WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2014 6:00pm - 10:00pm Review & Assessment THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2014 7:30am - 10:30am Advanced Lecture “On the Cusp” The “New” Periodontal Disease: “Inflammatory and Risky” This lecture will be designed to appeal to AVDC Diplomates and Registered Trainees, and Academy Fellows and Trackers. The focus of the presentation will be periodontitis. Periodontitis has entered into a new frontier as not only a major chronic infection but a disease of inflammation. Recent studies demonstrate the parallel nature of periodontitis with a similar inflammatory cascade of chronic inflammatory diseases as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Likewise, periodontal therapy protocols have moved from a “treatment” orientation to one of “management” and therefore emphasis to host modulation including nutraceuticals and antioxidants over singular antimicrobial strategies. We consider not only the biofilm as an etiology but genetics and the epigenetic involvement of risk factors to determine the prognosis of retaining the dentition. Several examples will be provided on managing periodontal inflammation as a systemic and local immune response. The guest lecturer is Samuel B. Low, D.D.S., M.S., M.Ed., Professor Emeritus, University of Florida, College of Dentistry; Associate faculty member of the Pankey Institute with 30 years of private practice experience in periodontics, lasers and implant placement. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology. Dr. Low provides dentists and dental hygienists with the tools for successfully managing the periodontal patient in general and periodontal practices and is affiliated with the Florida Probe Corporation. He was selected “Dentist of the Year” by the Florida Dental Association, Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Texas Dental School, and the Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition Award. He is a Past President of the Florida Dental Association and past ADA Trustee. Mandibular Fracture Repair Techniques - The lecture will cover techniques on how to repair symphyseal separation, unilateral mandibular body fracture, bilateral mandibular body fracture, coronoid fracture, condylar fracture, multiple fracture. The lecture and the lab to follow will concentrate on non invasive techniques that preserve tooth roots. The lecture will also emphasize the importance of maintaining occlusion. The laboratory will then give a chance to the participant to apply some of the techniques covered in the lab. Actual fractures will have to be repaired using intraoral splints, interdental wires and intraosseous wires when indicated. (DVMs ONLY) Limited to 24 participants. WWW.VETERINARYDENTALFORUM.COM 9 LABORATORY DESCRIPTIONS (continued) Program subject to change Oral Radiology for Technicians - This is a lecture and laboratory combination. The presentation includes description of equipment, indications for radiology, positioning and troubleshooting imperfect images. Conventional bisecting angle technique and other techniques are discussed in the lecture and explored in the presentation. Lab time is given to exposing images of all teeth in both canine and feline cadaver specimens. Special attention is given to techniques to examine imperfect images, evaluate what went wrong and ways to fix imperfect images. Limited to 24 participants. Orthodontics II: Treatment of Linguoversion of the Mandibular Canine Teeth in the Cat and Dog – Veterinary orthodontics is not about creating a cosmetically perfect dentition, but about treating painful malocclusions to allow the animal to have a comfortable, functional bite. There will be a 50-minute lecture at the beginning of the lab to familiarize the attendee with the etiology and pathophysiology of this very painful condition.- A review of the anatomy and classes of occlusion of the dog and cat will be provided. The materials and techniques will be thoroughly discussed to allow the attendee to maximize the remaining 3+ hours of lab time. Each attendee will have a dog (or cat) cadaver head and all of the materials needed to fabricate an acrylic bite plate with an inclined plane appliance. The appliance is intended to be durable and properly secured to the teeth in order to prevent inadvertent removal by the patient. Each attendee will learn the proper techniques to maintain the patient while the appliance is in place and to safely remove the appliance. (DVMs ONLY) Limited to 20 participants. Periodontal Treatment II: Advanced Periodontal Therapy - This program will focus on periodontal therapy beyond the level of prophylaxis. Participants will learn the proper treatment approach for moderate to advanced periodontal disease. This course will cover proper methods for closed root debridement, open root debridement, application of regenerative agents, apically repositioned flaps, and laterally repositioned flaps. (DVMs ONLY) Prerequisite lecture is Advanced Periodontal Therapy. Limited to 30 participants. Rabbit and Rodent Dentistry - This laboratory will cover oral anatomy, equipment, occlusal equilibration procedure, extraction of incisors, intraoral and extraoral cheek teeth extraction techniques. A lecture will precede the lab and give examples of the techniques to be covered later in the lab. (DVMs ONLY) Limited to 24 participants. Regional Nerve Blocks for Technicians- This is a hands on wetlab covering specifics of regional nerve blocks for the dog and cat. Information covered will include technique for all appropriate regional blocks used in the dental practice, equipment required, agents and dosing used, as well as practical uses for this procedure. Periodontal therapy techniques for the veterinary technician will also be covered. This will include hand instrumentation, probing and charting, closed root planing, perioceutic placement and gingival curettage. Periodontal disease processes and prevention will also be discussed. Limited to 24 participants. Restorative Lab: Crown Preparation - Hands on laboratory covering Crown preparation, impressions and stone models. Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. (DVMs ONLY) Limited to 30 participants. Specialists in Training: Anesthesia - Refer to VDF website for complete information. (AVDC Trainees ONLY) Limited to 40 participants. Surgical Endodontics - This laboratory will teach the techniques of surgical endodontics. Topics will include: indications (and contraindications), equipment needs, and techniques for all major teeth. The hands on portion will cover the surgical approach (incision), trephination (bone removal), apicoectomy, root end preparation and filling, closure, and follow-up. The techniques will include a step by step performance for the four major teeth (maxillary and mandibular canines, the maxillary fourth premolar and the mandibular molars. We will also discuss the various root end filling materials as well as their relative advantages and disadvantages. Finally, we will cover the recommended equipment, including ultrasonic reotips for maximum preservation of tooth structure. (DVMs ONLY) Limited to 30 participants. Veterinary Dental Radiographic Technique Simplified Veterinary dental radiography, in particular positioning is one of the most frustrating aspects of veterinary dentistry. The bisecting angle technique can be demanding and difficult to perform consistently. Positioning the patient, the sensor and the tube head to create quality images can be challenging. A simplified approach can consistently produce quality images with less confusion if a few principles are followed and some of the variables removed. Limited to 48 participants. Vital Pulpotomy of Horse Incisors and Canines - This lab will allow participants to obtain hands on experience for the sterile preparation and application of vital pulpotomy in the horse incisors and canines. The lab will cover indications, instrumentation, medication, equipment and materials to complete a vital pulpotomy of a simple rooted tooth. (DVMs ONLY) Prerequisite lecture is Vital Pulpotomy. Limited to 12 participants. Wildlife Dentistry - This lab will be hands on instruction in primate restorations, endodontics in large cats and beakistry. (DVMs ONLY) Prerequisite lectures are Exotic Animal Dentistry and Large Cat Dentistry. Limited to 30 participants. Restorations Lab: Equipment, Materials, and Clinical Applications - A one hour lecture presentation of recent updates, focusing on bonding agents and composite restorative materials and their application in veterinary dental practices. The lecture will be followed by a three hour hands-on laboratory where attendees will learn the proper indications for dentin bonding and composite restorations. Lesions will be created and restored and instructors will be available to offer their clinical insights as well as “tricks of the trade.” (DVMs ONLY) Limited to 30 participants. 10 ATTENDEE PROSPECTUS 2014 VDF PROGRAM GRID - FRIDAY LABS Program subject to change (for current schedule, refer to VDF website; www.VeterinaryDentalForum.com) TIME 8:00am12:00pm Orthodontics II: Treatment Comprehensive Periodontal of Lingually Displaced Debridement Techniques & Mandibular Canine Teeth in Instrumentation for Treatment the Cat and Dog & Prevention of Periodontal (W Gengler, D Nossaman and Disease C Miles) (C Weldin and R Brannan) Canine Surgical Extractions Lab I (B Shope) Restorative Lab: Crown Preparations (R Furman and C Coffman) Introduction to Jaw Fracture Repair (K Taney) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) 12:00-1:00pm Lunch (pre-purchased lunches available with ticket in Exhibit Hall) 1:00 - 6:00PM 1:00-5:00pm Endodontic/Prosthodontics Laboratory for Veterinary Technicians (D Carmichael) Mandibular Fracture Repair Periodontal Treatment II Lab Advanced Periodontal Therapy Techniques (D Beebe) (L Legendre) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) Endodontics I Endodontic Access (L Baker and C Schor) 2014 VDF PROGRAM GRID - SATURDAY LABS Program subject to change (for current schedule, refer to VDF website; www.VeterinaryDentalForum.com) TIME 8:00-12:00pm Oral Radiology for Veterinary Technicians (J Moore) Rabbit and Rodent Dentistry (L Legendre) Canine Extractions Lab II (D Kressin and S Honzelka) Endodontics II: Canal Cleaning, Shaping and Obturation (M Peak) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) Specialist in Training Lecture - Anesthesia (J Quandt and M Barletta) Pre-requisite Lecture: Introduction to Standard Root Canal Therapy 12:00-1:00pm Lunch (pre-purchased lunches available with ticket in Exhibit Hall) Wildlife Dentistry (P Emily and S Holmstrom) 1:00-5:00pm Veterinary Dental Radiographic Technique Simplified (B Beckman) (DVMs ONLY) Feline Extractions Lab (C Miles) Surgical Endodontics Lab (B Niemiec) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) Pre-requisite Lectures: Exotic Animal Dentistry and Large Cat Dentistry Specialist in Training Lab - Anesthesia (J Quandt and M Barletta) AVDC Trainees Only 2014 VDF PROGRAM GRID - SUNDAY LABS Program subject to change (for current schedule, refer to VDF website; www.VeterinaryDentalForum.com) TIME Regional Nerve Block and Peri8:00-12:00pm odontal Therapy for Technicians (A Mills) Restorations: Equipment, Materials and Clinical Applications (M Peak) Vital Pulpotomy of Horse Feline and Canine Extractions Incisors and Canines Lab (C Niederman and J Reiswig) (H Lobprise) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) (DVMs ONLY) 12:00-1:00pm Lunch (pre-purchased lunches available with ticket in Exhibit Hall) 1:00-5:00pm No afternoon labs scheduled.
