FRIDAY EVENING DINNER AND AUCTION EVENT
Friday Evening Dinner/Auction Event to Honor Dr. Peter Emily, Founder and Co-Chair
of the Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation - Join your colleagues
on Friday, November 14th from 6:00pm-10:00pm for a formal dinner and auction event
to honor Dr. Peter Emily and to benefit the Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental
Foundation (PEIVDF) and the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry (F4VD) at 200 Peachtree
Events Center.
Dr. Emily has made it his life’s work to promote the oral and dental health of domestic and
captive animals around the world through his charity, PEIVDF. The PEIVDF’s mission is
to provide life improving advanced veterinary dental care and treatment to exotic animals
located in captive animal facilities and animal sanctuaries in the US (and in the future,
overseas) that are under funded and/or understaffed from a veterinary perspective (www.peteremilyfounation.org). The
Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry is also a beneficiary of this event. Learn more about the F4VD’s mission on their
website, www.f4vd.com.
Tickets are $50 each for registered adult attendees, $20 each for children 10 and under, exhibitor tickets are $80
each and are available for purchase through the VDF attendee and exhibitor registration forms. 200 Peachtree Events
Center is a short walk (1.5 blocks) from the host hotel. The event will open with a reception featuring passed hors
d’oeuvres, two drink tickets per guest and entertainment by Luna Stings, an Atlanta string
trio. Guests are encouraged to view and start bidding on the silent auction items during the
reception. A plated dinner will be served at 7:00pm. Presentations honoring Dr. Emily will
occur during dinner followed by a short live auction. Bidding on the silent auction items will
wrap up after dinner while guests enjoy a dessert buffet. Auction item winners should be
prepared to complete their purchases on site via credit card, check or cash.
Seating is limited so be sure to purchase your tickets when you register. They may not be

Advanced Lecture “On the Cusp”
The “New” Periodontal Disease: “Inflammatory and Risky”
This lecture will be designed to appeal to AVDC Diplomates
and Registered Trainees, and Academy Fellows and Trackers.
The focus of the presentation will be periodontitis. Periodontitis
has entered into a new frontier as not only a major chronic
infection but a disease of inflammation. Recent studies
demonstrate the parallel nature of periodontitis with a similar
inflammatory cascade of chronic inflammatory diseases as
diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Likewise, periodontal therapy
protocols have moved from a “treatment” orientation to one
of “management” and therefore emphasis to host modulation
including nutraceuticals and antioxidants over singular
antimicrobial strategies. We consider not only the biofilm as
an etiology but genetics and the epigenetic involvement of risk
factors to determine the prognosis of retaining the dentition.
Several examples will be provided on managing periodontal
inflammation as a systemic and local immune response.
The guest lecturer is Samuel B. Low,
D.D.S., M.S., M.Ed., Professor Emeritus,
University of Florida, College of Dentistry;
Associate faculty member of the Pankey
Institute with 30 years of private practice
experience in periodontics, lasers and
implant placement. He is also a Diplomate of
the American Board of Periodontology and
Past President of the American Academy of
Periodontology. Dr. Low provides dentists
and dental hygienists with the tools for
successfully managing the periodontal patient in general and
periodontal practices and is affiliated with the Florida Probe
Corporation. He was selected “Dentist of the Year” by the Florida
Dental Association, Distinguished Alumnus by the University
of Texas Dental School, and the Gordon Christensen Lecturer
Recognition Award. He is a Past President of the Florida Dental
Association and past ADA Trustee.

The 2014 Veterinary Dental Forum Fun Run/Walk will be on
Friday, November 14th at 6:30am. The final course is still being
determined, but in past years it has typically been 2-3 miles. The
Fun Run/Walk is not a race, it is based on individual predicted
times. Awards will be given to the people who are the closest to
their predicted time (not necessarily the fastest!). This event is a
great way to showcase and celebrate your personal fitness goals
and achievements. Not only is this benefiting your health, but the
proceeds also benefit Veterinary Dental Education. Those who
pre-register will receive a 2014 Veterinary Dental Forum Fun
Run/Walk T-shirt! The fee to participate is only $30 ($35 after
Sept. 15th) so don’t forget to sign up when you register for the
conference.

Endodontics and Prosthodontics for the Veterinary Technician
(5 hour lab) - Endodontics is the branch of veterinary dentistry that
involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the pulp and
periradicular tissue. This 2 1/2 hour laboratory will demonstrate the
variety of methods used to diagnose endodontic disease as well as
a variety of procedures that are utilized to treat endodontic disease.
These procedures include: vital pulp therapy, conventional root
canal therapy, and surgical root canal therapy (apicoectomy). This
laboratory will focus on the veterinary dental technician’s role in
preparing for and assisting in these procedures. Prosthodontics is
that branch of dentistry that deals with the artificial replacement of
natural teeth or associated structures. Prosthodontics in veterinary
dentistry means crowns. There are many cases in veterinary
dentistry where crown restoration is indicated. This 2 ½ hour
laboratory will demonstrate the techniques involved with preparing
teeth for crown restoration, impression taking for crown restoration
as well as the procedure for crown cementation. Differences
between the various crown choices (full jacket cast metal vs.

the lecture will be on non-invasive fracture repair techniques and
achieving normal occlusion, a cornerstone of jaw fracture repair. To
that point, pharyngostomy tube placement will also be discussed
and demonstrated to facilitate appliance placement and maintain
correct occlusion. Proper placement of wire and acrylic appliances
on the mandible will be reviewed and practiced. Symphyseal wiring
techniques will also be demonstrated and can be performed by
the attendees. Standard equipment utilized for non-invasive jaw
fracture repair will be discussed and will be available for use during
the laboratory. Stabilization of caudal mandibular or TMJ fractures
with maxillomandibular fixation will be demonstrated. Please note
the majority of interdental wiring and acrylic placement will be
performed on SawbonesTM mandibular models which attendees
will be able to take home with them. A limited number of canine and
feline cadaver heads will be available for demonstration and further
practice. This laboratory would be ideal for those preparing for the
AVDC examination or veterinarians with advanced dental training.
(DVMs ONLY) Limited to 40 participants.
Mandibular Fracture Repair Techniques - The lecture will cover
techniques on how to repair symphyseal separation, unilateral
mandibular body fracture, bilateral mandibular body fracture,
coronoid fracture, condylar fracture, multiple fracture. The lecture
and the lab to follow will concentrate on non invasive techniques
that preserve tooth roots. The lecture will also emphasize the
importance of maintaining occlusion. The laboratory will then give a
chance to the participant to apply some of the techniques covered
in the lab. Actual fractures will have to be repaired using intraoral
splints, interdental wires and intraosseous wires when indicated.
(DVMs ONLY) Limited to 24 participants.

techniques are discussed in the lecture and explored in the
presentation. Lab time is given to exposing images of all teeth in
both canine and feline cadaver specimens. Special attention is
given to techniques to examine imperfect images, evaluate what
went wrong and ways to fix imperfect images. Limited to
24 participants.
Orthodontics II: Treatment of Linguoversion of the Mandibular
Canine Teeth in the Cat and Dog – Veterinary orthodontics is
not about creating a cosmetically perfect dentition, but about
treating painful malocclusions to allow the animal to have a
comfortable, functional bite. There will be a 50-minute lecture
at the beginning of the lab to familiarize the attendee with the
etiology and pathophysiology of this very painful condition.- A
review of the anatomy and classes of occlusion of the dog and cat
will be provided. The materials and techniques will be thoroughly
discussed to allow the attendee to maximize the remaining 3+
hours of lab time. Each attendee will have a dog (or cat) cadaver
head and all of the materials needed to fabricate an acrylic bite
plate with an inclined plane appliance. The appliance is intended
to be durable and properly secured to the teeth in order to prevent
inadvertent removal by the patient. Each attendee will learn the
proper techniques to maintain the patient while the appliance is in
place and to safely remove the appliance. (DVMs ONLY) Limited to
20 participants.
Periodontal Treatment II: Advanced Periodontal Therapy - This
program will focus on periodontal therapy beyond the level of
prophylaxis. Participants will learn the proper treatment approach
for moderate to advanced periodontal disease. This course
