Alli Gloyd and Keyahndra Cannon are the only two Wildcats left on the roster from that first meeting. Gloyd scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and recorded three steals in the first meeting, while Cannon poured in 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. Breaking Down Bakersfield The Roadrunners enter the new campaign looking to improve upon a 2013-14 season that saw Bakersfield go 19-12 overall and 12-4 in the WAC to earn a spot in the WNIT. The Roadrunners have been picked as the favorites to win the WAC this year according to the conference’s preseason coaches’ poll. Senior forward Tyonna Outland was also picked as the preseason WAC Player of the Year. She’s living up to the hype so far, as she scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting in Bakersfield’s opening night 9656 victory over Air Force on Friday. Senior guard Brooklyn Hinkens also chipped in with 21 points in the win. Last Time Out For Arizona Four Wildcats scored in double figures, as Arizona led wire-to-wire en route to a convincing 76-55 exhibition victory over Concordia, last Tuesday afternoon inside the McKale Center. Sophomore forward LaBrittney Jones scored a team-high 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, while also grabbing five rebounds and connecting on 6-of-8 free throws. Sophomore forward Dejza James provided a spark off the bench, nearly notching a double-double, as she put in 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded a game-high three blocks in her first game back from an ACL injury that kept her out for most of last season. Senior Candice Warthen had a nice day offensively, scoring 12 points, as she connected on a game-high eight shots at the free throw line, while also dishing out a game-high equaling three assists. Sophomore forward Breanna Workman chipped in as well, scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high tying 10 rebounds in the win. Janis Peterson led the way for Concordia, as she scored a game-high 17 points, but shot just 7-of-21 from the field. Katie Ogdon was the only other Eagle to score in double figures, as she contributed 12 points and five rebounds in the loss. This one was never in doubt, as Arizona raced out to an early 11-0 advantage, holding Concordia without a bucket for the first five minutes of the contest. The Cats would go on to hold the Eagles to just 32 percent shooting (10-of-31) for the game and 28 percent (7-of-25) from the field for first half. Concordia was able to trim the Arizona lead down to 30-22 with 2:47 remaining in the half, but never got any closer than that, as the Cats strung together a mini 7-2 run to take a 37-24 lead into halftime. Arizona outscored Concordia 13-3 over a five-minute span, capped off by a Jones layup, to take its largest lead of the game at 56-34 with 10:55 remaining in the contest. The Wildcats shot just over 44 percent from the field (15-of-34) in the second half, while they converted on nearly 78 percent of their free throws for the game (21-of-27). Arizona won the battle in the paint, outscoring Concordia 32-20, including recording 21 second chance points to the Eagles’ seven. The Cats also received a huge contribution from the bench, outscoring the Concordia reserves 38-13 on the day. Senior Alli Gloyd (9.4 pts, 6 rebs in 2012-13) and redshirt freshman Dejza James also return after tearing ACLs last year. For Openers Arizona is 26-17 all-time in season openers and 15-9 when opening the year at home.... UA has won four of its last five season openers and four straight home openers....the Cats have never opened the season at home under head coach Niya Butts....last home opener came during 2006-07 season. Worth the Wait Going into Monday’s game, Arizona is the only team in the Pac-12 that has yet to play a regular season contest. Cats Tabbed 12th in Pac-12 Preseason Polls Arizona was picked to finish 12th in the conference in both the preseason media and coaches’ polls. The Cats received 12 overall points in the media poll to finish just behind Colorado, who received 42 points. Stanford (116, 7 first place), California (111, 3 first place), and Oregon State (105, 2 first place) rounded out the coaches’ picks for the conference’s top three finishers, while the media picked California (194, 9 first place) to take home the league crown, followed by Stanford (190, 7 first place) and @ArizonaWBBall By The Numbers Arizona returns 53 percent of its total points scored (913/1,736), 48 percent of its rebounds (494/1,020), 54 percent of its field goals made (357/661), 25 percent of its three-pointers made (27/109), 56 percent of its free throws converted (172/305), 41 percent of its assists (140/344), and 53 percent of its steals from a season ago (103/193). “Gloyd” to Have You Back Senior forward Alli Gloyd returns to action after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. Gloyd averaged 9.4 points and six rebounds per game during the 2012-13 campaign. If one were to plug in her 201213 numbers into last year’s overall statistics, she would have led the team in free throw percentage (.739) and overall rebounding (6.0), while her total steals (37) and points per game (9.4) would rank second among all returners. Gloyd scored in double figures 14 separate times during 2012-13. Follow the Leader Candice Warthen returns as the team’s leading scorer from a year ago (11.1 ppg). She also led the team in total points (334), field goals made (134), assists per game (3.1), and steals per contest (1.3). She’s a transition post player who gets up and down the floor, can finish around the rim and make the 16 to 18 foot jumper. She also has a tremendous presence inside in terms of blocking shots.” Michal Miller | Guard | 5-7 | Michigan City High School (Michigan City, Ind.) Miller comes to Arizona ranked as 35th best guard in the country according to Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. She also brings loads of basketball experience, as she will have started all four seasons for Michigan City High School by the time her senior year concludes. Miller enters her final season at Michigan City as one of the most dangerous allaround players in the state, as she averaged career highs in points (20.4 ppg), rebounds (6.5 rpg), and steals (4.8 spg) last year, while earning All-America, First-Team Underclass All-State and All-League honors. She was also named the team’s most valuable player. During her sophomore campaign, Miller averaged 11.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 3.7 steals per contest on her way to claiming First Team Underclass All-State and Second Team All-League honors, after guiding the Wolves to a 19-4 overall record. Miller made an impact on the Michigan City program right away, as she started all 25 contests her freshman year, averaging 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 3.5 steals, and a block per game, helping the Wolves obtain an 18-7 overall record. Miller wants to study music or communications when she gets to Arizona. From coach Butts… “I feel like we were able to get one of the best perimeter players in this class in Michal Miller. She is an extremely versatile guard who can play all three spots on the perimeter. She can slash and get to the basket, has a solid mid-range jump shot and her game beyond the arc is also efficient. She has all the tools to be one of the great players in our league, so we’re really excited about that.” Destiny Graham | Forward | 6-2 | Eastside College Prep (East Palo Alto, Calif.) Graham comes to Arizona ranked as the No. 28 forward in the country according to Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. She enters her senior season at Eastside College Prep poised for a breakout year, as she set career bests in points scored (14.6 ppg), rebounds (8.6 rpg), and blocks (3.4 bpg), on her way to claiming league MVP honors and a spot on the All-League First Team. Graham averaged a career-best 5.1 steals per contest her sophomore year, while leading the Panthers to the league title and a berth in the state championship game, after going 22-9 overall. She was named the West Bay Foothill League’s most improved player and earned Second Team All-League honors. Graham made an impact right away as a freshman, pulling down 8.3 boards per contest and nearly averaging two blocks a game on the way to being named an All-League Honorable Mention. She’s started all three seasons thus far at Eastside. Graham played under head coach Donovan Blythe both at Eastside College Prep and on Blythe’s Basketball AAU squad. She plans to major in criminology. From Coach Butts… “Destiny Graham is extremely athletic and agile. She brings a bit more size than we have now and her presence is certainly going to be needed. Destiny fits our style of play and has a huge upside. We are looking forward to her joining our family.” Follow the Cats! CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD Niya BUTTS HEAD COACH SEVENTH YEAR | TENNESSEE, ‘00 Entering her seventh season at the helm of the Wildcat program, women’s basketball head coach Niya Butts is more energized and driven than ever to continue to build on the strong tradition of Arizona women’s basketball and to take the program to new heights. With their first ever top-25 recruiting class and an experienced and motivated group of veterans, the 2014-15 season is poised to be a successful stop on the road to greatness. One of the most sought after young coaches in the country, Arizona named Butts its new women’s basketball head coach on April 3, 2008, ushering in a new era of Wildcat women’s basketball. She is the eighth head coach in the program’s history and the first African American female head coach at the University of Arizona. In five seasons, Butts has achieved a number of milestones early on in her head coaching career. During the 2011-12 season, Arizona’s 11-1 start was the best in program history since the 1999-2000 season. Butts earned her 70th-career win with UA’s 100-68 victory versus Oregon on January 13, 2013. Senior guard Davellyn Whyte finished her career at Arizona in 2013 as one of the best players in Wildcat women’s basketball history. She was the 16th pick in the WNBA draft to the San Antonio Silver Stars, earned her fourth-straight All-Pac-12 accolade and was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American in 2012. Arizona’s win was the first over Utah since 1985 and broke a six-game losing streak. The Wildcats followed it up with a 61-52 win at home for the first two-game winning streak against the Utes in history. On January 13, UA defeated Oregon, 100-68, scoring 100 points as a team for just the third time since 2009. During the 2010-11 slate, the Wildcats made their first postseason appearance since the 2004-05 season and their first appearance in the Women’s NIT since the 2000-01 season. Arizona won eight of its last 11 contests. Also in 2010-11, the Wildcats got a win against the Arizona State Sun Devils for the first time since Jan. 26, 2005. The Wildcats’ 10-8 conference record in 2010-11 is their best since the 2004-05 campaign and their 21 wins overall is the most since the 2003-04 season. The 2010-11 season marks the highest finish in the Pac-10 for Arizona (fourth), since tying for the Pac-10 regular-season crown in 2004. Senior forward Ify Ibekwe and then-sophomore Whyte both earned 2011 All-Pac-10 accolades. Ibekwe was named the 2011 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the Pac10 All-Defensive Team. Barnes was named honorable mention All-Pac-10 Freshman Team. In the awards given out by the Pac-10 media, Ibekwe was named All-Pac-10 and a member of the All-Pac-10 Defensive Team. Senior forward Soana Lucet was also named to the 2011 Pac-10 AllTournament Team by members of the media. Ibekwe capped the season off with her honorable mention Associated Press All-America honor. Overall, the Wildcats improved from 12 wins in 2008-09, to 14 wins in 2009-10, to 21 wins in 2010-11. In Pac-10 play, Arizona improved from four wins in 2008-09, to six wins in 2009-10, to 10 wins in 2010-11. During the 2009-10 campaign, the Wildcats posted their highest win total in five seasons while also achieving the most Pac-10 wins for the program in that same span. In their historic win over Oregon on Jan. 16, Arizona scored a school-record 119 points while then-freshman Whyte scored a single-game record 39 points. The Cats won the Iona College Tip-Off Tournament to start the season and wrapped up by advancing to the Pac-10 Tournament Quarterfinals for the second-straight season. Whyte and then-junior Ibekwe were named first-team All-Pac-10 while Whyte was chosen as the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and Ibekwe was named to the all-defensive team. Whyte was the top vote-getter on the five-player Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. Ibekwe repeated both her All-Pac-10 and All-Defensive Team awards after earning the same honors during her sophomore season. In 2008-09, Butts led the Wildcats to a Bank of Hawaii Classic Tournament Championship in the first weekend of her career, including wins over Hawai’i and Loyola Marymount, and then mentored the Wildcats to the second round of the Pac-10 Tournament, propelled by a win over Washington State. The conference portion of the slate included wins over Oregon and USC and a sweep of Washington. Then a sophomore, Ibekwe was named to the Associated Press All-America honorable men- @ArizonaWBBall PAGE 12 tion team. Ibekwe, a first-team All-Pac-10 selection and first-team All-Pac-10 Defensive Team honoree, led Arizona in scoring, rebounding, steals, blocked shots, free throws, field goals and double-doubles during the 2008-09 slate. She finished the season with 336 rebounds, coming up three shy of the program’s single-season record set in the 2003-04 season. Her 16 double-doubles were also second all-time for a single-season behind the 21 posted in the 2002-03 campaign. Ibekwe led the Pac-10 and finished sixth in the NCAA in rebounds per game at 11.6. She was also third in the Pac-10 in scoring at 15.7 points per game, while also finishing second in blocked shots (1.8) and 4th in steals (2.1). Butts came to Tucson from the University of Kentucky where she spent five seasons as an assistant coach. In her final season in Lexington, she served as Kentucky’s associate head coach, and was the program’s recruiting coordinator for three seasons. While at UK, Butts secured two top-10 recruiting classes, solidifying her status as one of the best young coaching talents in the nation. Butts is no stranger to rebuilding programs. During her tenure at Kentucky, Butts helped coach the Wildcats to an 88-72 record (.550) over five seasons, with a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2005-06 and three WNIT appearances. In her final season, Butts helped lead Kentucky to a 17-16 overall record, an 8-6 mark in the SEC for a fourth-place finish, and a WNIT quarterfinal appearance. Before her stint at Kentucky, Butts spent the 2002-03 season as an assistant coach at Michigan State. Butts helped coach MSU to a 17-12 overall record that season and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Spartans’ first since 1997. Prior to Michigan State, Butts spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn., leading the Golden Eaglettes to two Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championships in both 2001 and 2002. Butts played collegiately at the University of Tennessee for Pat Summitt, where she was a four-year letter winner and a member of two NCAA Championship teams (1997, 1998). The Lady Vols won three SEC titles (1998, 1999, 2000) during her tenure, and she was voted the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1997. She also won the Lady Vols’ Unsung Hero Award that season. Butts was a three-time Academic All-SEC selection (1998, 1999, 2000) and earned Tennessee’s Academic Achiever of the Week four times. She played in 111 career games at UT and graduated in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in social work and a minor in psychology. She received a master’s degree in education from Tennessee Tech in 2002. Butts, 35, is a native of Americus, Ga. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. THE NIYA BUTTS FILE Hometown: Americus, Ga.
