It seems as if we just sent a newsletter
(because we just did!) Breakfast is next week –
early because of the Thanksgiving Holiday so
please make sure you plan on attending. This will
be our last networking breakfast this year as we
don’t do a December breakfast in the midst of the
holiday season. We will do a December newsletter so if you have information for that please let us
know.
November always seems to be a time to
reflect a little in preparation for the coming winter
and, for many of us, an opportunity to reflect on
the many blessings we have and (hopefully) possessing the matching gratitude for having those blessings in our lives.
Giving thanks for the harvest, being grateful for health and family, jobs
and careers, for relationships and friendships, for food and shelter, and
sometimes just being grateful for the ability to be grateful.
One instance of gratitude is for those people that have provided
us with wisdom and insight, education and knowledge, who have guided
and mentored us, shared their best practices, their successes, their failures, and themselves asking for nothing in return. Doesn’t this often happen at our breakfast meetings and our after-hours networking events,
our committee meetings and during those one-on-one coffee gettogethers we often have with fellow chamber members. The lessons
learned and lifelong relationships have a value beyond measure and are
well deserving of our thanks and gratitude. Let me posit the flip side of
that relationship: those that give and share and serve should also be
grateful. Should they not be grateful for their understanding,
knowledge, and success and grateful to have the opportunity to give
and to share? I sometimes think we might overlook those gifts and abilities fearing false pride. But gratitude need not always be broadcast from
the rooftops, simple reflection and an acknowledgment might suffice.
So maybe you could look at chamber membership and our networking and breakfast events as both an opportunity to receive and to
give – and do so with gratitude, knowing how really fortunate we are to
have the lives we lead!
November breakfast (on the 21st) we ask that you bring gloves,
hats, mittens, scarves and socks of all sizes and shapes of the young and
the old so they can be distributed to those in need within our Webster
community. This has been a huge success in the past and I am banking
on you that we can far exceed our past triumphs and fill this critical wintertime need in Webster. Donations can be accepted at the Chamber
office until December 3rd so please don’t forget to help with this worthwhile effort!
One last note: Open enrollment is underway for health insurance. The Chamber has the ability to get insurance for anybody through
every option: commercial, individual, sole proprietor, family, business,
through the SHOP or on and off the NYS Exchange (where you might get
a premium discount tax credit. No one has insurance for you or anyone
you know that the Chamber doesn’t offer – we are a full service health
insurance source for our members, our businesses and the individuals in
our community!

Thanks for Giving Food Drive
Penfield Central Federal Credit Union opened its
doors in February 1969 in the home of Penfield teacher Dick
Dennison. Embracing the concept of “people helping people,”
PCFCU was chartered to serve employees of the Penfield Central School District and their families.
In 1983, BOCES Federal Credit Union merged with
PCFCU giving members access to additional products and services. In 1984, the name was changed to Penfield Federal
Credit Union (PFCU) to better reflect their new field of membership.
The first few years saw transactions taking place in
their President’s homes, most notably during the mid-1970’s in
former President/CEO Len Szumiloski’s den. Proudly, the credit union remains a family tradition with many of the relationships formed in that den still strong today.
In 1995 Penfield Federal Credit Union’s field of membership included 150 schools, social service agencies, small
businesses and community groups. To better serve these
groups, the credit union established its current headquarters at
2520 Browncroft Boulevard in Penfield.
The Perinton branch opened in 2000, to accommodate
the growth in that geographical area. In 2004 the credit union
opened its third branch in Webster, and in keeping with their
educational roots, in 2008 a student branch was opened at Bishop Kearney High School to promote financial literacy to the students.
In 2002, the credit union saw a major change in the
field of membership as they converted to the current community charter. With a member base that extended far beyond Penfield, it was decided to create a name that was not descriptive
of one area, but based on their philosophy to put the "Family
First."
Today, after completing 40 years of service to their
members Family First maintains the same values of family, integrity, relationships,
service and trust, that
the credit union was
founded on. From their
roots as a small, homebased credit union for
Penfield
educators,
Family First Federal
Credit Union is now a
full-service
financial
institution with more
than 12,900 members
and over $150 million
in assets.
With the focus continuing to be on the members of the
credit union, who are also the owners, the employees of Family
First are committed to making a difference in the local communities. In addition to monetary donations to the Webster Comfort Care Home and the Len Szumiloski Scholarships (in the
name of former President and CEO), Family First Credit Union
also sponsors: Webster’s Movies in the Park, Webster Central
School Districts YEA Program, CDS Strikes for Abilities, Meagan’s Run and many more.
Congratulations to Family First Federal Credit Union –
the Webster Chamber of Commerce’s November 2014 Business
of the Month!
