President’s Message Sally Sjobeck
As this year is rapidly coming to an end I look
back at all the events and discussions about
future events that have occurred. The current
Board has been very active in working with
Club members on proposals and ideas for
future events. Even though several are going
off the Board in a few weeks, they are
continuing to make sure events are planned
for 2015 and there is a smooth transition to the
new Board members. I cannot thank them
enough for all the work they have done and
their support and continual efforts to make this
an active club with attention to all the various
venues.
2015 looks to be a great year filled with
events. Proposals already on the table
include a grooming seminar, handling seminar
for the show golden, hands-on seminar with a
Golden breeder judge, and a CCA. In
addition, there has been discussions about
doing more to promote Goldens in the
community, including participating in Meet the
Breed events at local shows. If you want to
assist or have ideas for additional events or
ways to promote Goldens in the community,
please reach out to me or the appropriate
Board member.
It’s been a fun and challenging past year for
me. I cannot express my appreciation enough
for helping me through it and teaching me
about all those little things that I never knew
occurred or that the Club was involved in. I’ve
had great mentors and have gotten to know so
many Club members along the way.
I hope to see you all more in the coming year
as I am able to get back into working and
showing my dogs. Even though my dogs have
enjoyed their lazy past year with minimal
training, they are very also excited to get back
into working and wake up each morning to see
what we are going to do that day.
Please attend the membership meeting on
November 21
members, and thank the current Board
members for all they have done.
Again, I cannot express my appreciation
enough to everyone who has helped make
2014 a great year for the Club and hope you
will continue doing so as the new Board
assumes the reins later this month. Sally Sjobeck

Sally mentioned that there are a lot of open
dates for 2015. There is some interest in having
a presentation on PRA and other health issues
either at the Specialty or some other time.
Anyone with an idea for an event can send a
proposal to Sally and the board will review it.
A followup discussion was held about the issue
of allowing All American dogs at the agility
trials hosted by MHGRC. Sally reported that so
far GRCA has not released a position on this
issue and so it is up to the individual clubs to
decide what they want to do. Around the
country, many of the Golden clubs that host
agility events do allow All American dogs.
Several club members who were not able to
attend the meeting sent messages to Sally to be
read to the group. All of that input was in
support of allowing the All American entries.
Marcy Werner also pointed out that as a nonprofit organization, part of our purpose is to
provide education to the dog owning
community in general, and allowing the All
American dogs into agility trials is a way to
benefit that group.
these will be handled by Keith Winch when he
attends the next meeting. In addition, the slate
of judges has been narrowed and Bruce
recommended that MHGRC support Dan Mills
and Kay Scott.
Another issue is to give the Master National
club input on the possibility of amending their
rules to require that judges must have handled a
dog that has successfully qualified at the Master
National event within the last 7 years to be able
to accept a judging assignment. Bruce
commented that this would probably reduce the
field of available judges down to about 40
people.
Further, the Master National club is considering
ways to deal with the tremendous growth in
entries to the Master National event. Bruce
reported that entries have gone from 361 in
2010 to 669 in 2013 so that the event has gotten
too big to be handled that way it has in the past.
Here are the options that have been presented:
1. Handlers who submit entries with multiple
dogs will have to prioritize their entries and
dogs will be selected in order until a limit of
500 dogs has been reached.
Doug Sutton moved to allow All American dogs
at agility trials hosted by MHGRC other than at
the Specialty show. Seconded by Marcy
Werner. Passed.
2. Set no limits on entries and allow the event
to expand to meet demand, hoping to be able to
find a facility large enough to accommodate the
event.
NEW BUSINESS
The slate of candidates for the upcoming
election was presented.
3. Split entries into Amateur Master National
and Open Master National with each group
holding its own event There has not yet been a
determination of how the two groups will be
defined.

4. The event could be reduced from 6 series (2
land, 2 water, 2 combo) to 5 series by
eliminating one water series. It would require
the approval of the AKC to make this change.
No additional candidates were submitted for
consideration at this time. The election will be
held during the November business meeting.
On behalf of Jim Gregory, agility rep, Sally
Sjobeck submitted a request for the club to
approve spending up to $3500 on a new tunnel
and new jumps for agility. Bruce McLean
moved to authorize the expenditure. Seconded
by Carol Hanft. Passed.
5. Another idea would be to hold qualifying
events on the east coast and west coast where a
team would need to be successful a this level to
participate in the Master National event.
Finally, Bruce recommended that Sally seek out
club members who will be affected by these
changes to get together as a task force to review
the proposals.
Bruce Evashevski brought up several issues
pending with Master Nationals that need input
from the club. A couple of items related to how
club delegates interact with the organization and

BEAUMARIS GOLDENS
Anne and her late husband, John, were among the
dedicated visionaries who established Mile Hi GRC in
1966. Not only did they contribute their time and
leadership to helping the club develop into the organization
it is today; John became a respected breeder judge. Anne,
originally from England, and John, a Canadian, met onboard ship as she was traveling to Canada. Once married,
they moved to Colorado where they established Beaumaris
kennels – blending selected American dogs with quality
imports from Great Britain. Through many years of
breeding, they never lost sight of the importance of breed
type, structure and soundness.
Anne and John also unselfishly shared their deep
knowledge of our breed with novice fanciers. When
critiquing a dog that might not meet the standard,
Anne would say it in such a way that it was
respectful… truly an art. “Not my cup of tea” was
as strong a criticism as she usually delivered. Their
efforts have left a lasting legacy on countless lines
of Goldens throughout the United States. Consider
the pedigrees of dogs you own or admire and you
will recognize that many great kennels have a
foundation from Beaumaris. American kennels,
such as Chasehill, Ginge, Knightwood, Pekay,
Miramichi, Star Crowned, Sunshine, Timberee &
Wingwatcher.
A woman of strong opinions, she was a mentor to many.
Anne was always gracious but spot on with her critique.
Anne continued to import Goldens from England and Coowned many with Nancy Ego of Chasehill Goldens. She
attended MHGRC events whenever possible. She enjoyed
reading, concerts, plays, her English women's group, and
walking her dogs at local recreation areas. Anne moved to
Pennsylvania in 2010 to be closer to her son, Brad, and his
Family. Anne will be known for her keen eye for a good
puppy and her bright smile. She will be missed by people
from all over the world.

Another couple of months have gone by since our last newsletter, and we again have another long list of great
accomplishments from our members and their dogs. So, as a quick overview, we have a: New Grand Champion; Best
Puppy in Show; multiple Best of Breeds; Bred by Exhibitor Best in Show; multiple Selects; multiple new
International Champions; and, multiple Winners Bitches, including a Winners Bitch from the 6 to 9 month Puppy
Class, in this puppy’s first show!
To start with, once each year the International All Breed Canine Association (IABCA) holds a show up in Loveland.
The IABCA differs from the AKC in that Dogs and Bitches can win a National and International Champion title based
on how well they conform to the standard of the breed. This is very much like earning a CCA title in the AKC. The
IABCA also has a head to head competitive aspect for Best of Breed, Group Placements and Best in Show. This year
we had four of our member dogs earn their International Champion titles. Additionally, during the four IABCA shows
that took place in October, Lynda and Mike Gehring’s bitch “Raylyn” and Sandy McFarland’s dog “Macallan” walked
away with many of the top awards, including: three Best of Breeds; two Sporting Dog Group 1’s and a Sporting Dog
Group 2 and, two Best in Show Bred by Exhibitor. The full list of the winnings in the IABCA is detailed below.
It seems like in every conformation newsletter article, Leslie Blythe & Mark D. Wilkinson and Lauren Relay & Dan
Rudzek have their names pop up, as one of the dogs always seems to do something notable, and it has happened
again. Congratulations to Leslie and Mark, and their bitch Fate. Fate won her Grand Champion title at the Arapahoe
Kennel Club show in September. Also, congratulations to Lauren and Dan, and their bitch Derby. Derby, in her first
show from the 6 - 9 puppy class went Winners Bitch at the Buckhorn Valley Kennel Club show in Greeley.
To wrap up, there are still two very notable accomplishments over the past couple of months. Angela Berkheimer
McLean and Bruce McLean’s bitch “Savannah” went Winner’s Bitch three times over a period of 4 weeks and
Jennifer Grossnickle’s puppy Deja went Best Puppy in Show on August 1 & 2 at the Bismark Kennel Club Shows.
It is truly amazing how well MHGRC dogs perform day in and day out. The dogs mentioned above are just a sample
from the complete list below of all of the great wins that our members and their dogs have had over the past couple of
months. Congratulations to everyone for another fabulous couple of months!

The proposed MNRC Constitution/By-Laws Amendment by the Atlanta Retriever Club Voting Results on October 10, 2014 at
the MNRC annual meeting in Corning CA was voted down by the attending club membership. The proposed amendment would
require a judge before serving as a Master National judge in any given year, must have handled a qualifying dog and passed said
dog, (i.e. earned a plate), at a Master National Event within seven (7) years of the date of the event. The data accumulated for
this would reduce the current eligible pool from a total of 121 to 40 judges from across the United States.

The 2015 judges elected from Region 3 for the 2015 MNRCHT event in Cheraw, SC was Kay Scott and Bruce Bachert both
from Texas.
In regards to the Retriever Hunt Test Advisory committee, the committee has provided recommendations to AKC and to Entry
Express on the issues related to the limited entry option for clubs.
The below is an edited excerpt from the Report to the Master National Retriever Club’s Annual Event
October 10, 2014 at the Rolling Hills Lodge in Corning, California.
Recommendations to AKC ‘so far’ this year included:
•
•
•
Approve the use of alternate attention getting devices, i.e. propane tank devices;
Establish a new AKC title for Master dogs, Lifetime Achievement Title;
The 200 miles ‘non-compete’ regulation be revised to 100 miles;
Add an option that clubs would be permitted to hold up to six (6) events {currently limited to four (4)} per calendar year. All
other related regulations would remain unchanged.
Recommendations to both AKC & Entry Express to address the ‘equality’ (ability to have equal access to entering) and ‘quantity’ (ability
for anyone who wanted to enter a test) issues related to the optional limited entries; to AKC:
To Entry Express:
• Open AKC Retriever Hunt Test entries no more than fourteen (14) days prior to the event;
• Openings would only be on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday;
• Openings would be at 4 pm ET for each event;
• Develop a ‘stand-by’ list that accommodates entries submitted after the limited entry event was ‘full’. When entered dogs are
‘scratched’, dogs on the stand-by list go into the test in the priority they were added to the stand-by list;
• If multiple dogs are attempted to be entered and there aren’t enough places for all of them, the available places would be filled
and the remainder of the dogs go on the stand-by list.
The status of these recommendations are:
• A new AKC title, Lifetime Achievement, was approved;
• The option for a club to conduct six (6) instead of four (4) events per calendar year was approved & becomes effective January
1, 2015;
• Entry Express has a team working to implement the recommendations* and hopes to have the work completed in 90 days from
the date approved.
•
*Based on extensive dialogue between AKC, EE and others, modifications of the recommendations will probably be made, including a
longer time (probably 30 days) and later time (probably Wednesday, 8 pm CT) for entries to open and the development of a selective
entry system whereby local clubs posting the event on EE will have a priority to enter a certain number of dogs that would be handled by
club workers. It should also be noted the opening date is determined by Entry Express and/or AKC.
•
The AKC will notify the Club ‘secretary of record’ of AKC decisions on new/revised regulations via e-mail. The committee reminds you
that any regulation change implemented will be carefully monitored and, if deemed appropriate, additional recommendations will be
made.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support and participation during my terms of Field
representative for MHGRC. It was a great and humbling experience and I wish the best for Susan Faulkner who should be our next field
representative
All the very best to one and all.
