THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A THOUGHT FOR TODAY
33 Sunday in Ordinary Time
The readings today are taken from Proverbs 31:10-31;
Psalm 128; 1Thessalonians 5:1-6; Matthew 25:14-30
"A ship in the harbor is safe...but that's not what ships
were made for." When we walk through a marina, we
see boats of all types and sizes. Each one is unique. We
are not unlike those boats. Some are faster, some slower.
Some can carry many passengers, others only a few or
perhaps even only one. Some can navigate through the
roughest waters, others need a fairly calm sea. Each of
us is quite different from one another.
Some of us can go out to many people, helping out in
great ways. Others can only reach out to one or two
people. Some of us can lead, others follow. Some of us
can formulate great plans, start things from scratch.
Others are better at following and maintaining things. It
does no good to compare ourselves to others, lamenting
the fact that we only have a few talents to work with.
The point of today's Gospel is so, so clear. Do what you
can with what you have, but do it!
What are we afraid of? What keeps us from going out in
love to others? It is useful to bring such questions to our
prayer. If we're not sure what's holding us back, then we
should be asking the Lord to help us see what we are
afraid of. Awareness is always the first step towards
creating something new in our lives.
Fear, not hatred, is the enemy of love. Many of us will
spend our whole lives fighting fears because new fears
have a way of rising up as we go through life. One fear
gets exchanged for another fear. There will probably
never be a time when we will be fear free. That's not the
point. We need to recognize our fears, see how they are
holding us back from loving others, and then ask for the
courage to set sail--to go out in love to our neighbor--to
bring the love of God to those who stand lost and alone.
Please note:
November 22nd and 23rd, the
2nd Collection will be for
“The Campaign for Human
Development”.
Please be generous.
RITE OF ACCEPTANCE
First Step: Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens
The rite that is called the Rite of Acceptance into
the order of catechumens is of the utmost importance.
Assembling publicly for the first time, the candidates who
have completed the period of the precatechumenate declare
their intention to the Church and the Church in turn,
carrying out its apostolic mission, accepts them as persons
who intend to become its members. God showers his grace
on the candidates, since the celebration manifests their
desire publicly and marks their reception and first
consecration by the Church.
The prerequisite for making this first step is that
the beginnings of the spiritual life and the fundamentals of
Christian teaching have taken root in the candidates. Thus
there must be evidence of the first faith, and intention to
enter into a deeper relationship with God in Christ.
Evidence of calling upon God in prayer, a sense of the
Church, and some experience of the company and spirit of
Christians is to have occurred.
After the rite, you will be dismissed for the
"Breaking Open of the Word." This spiritual exercise will
be part of your faith formation until Holy Saturday. You
will reflect on the Sunday Bible readings as a group, in
room 105, until the end of the Sunday liturgy.
Following the Rite of Acceptance, the catechumens
are embraced by the Church. The Church nourishes them
with the Word of God and sustains them by means of
liturgical celebrations. The catechumens should be eager,
then, to take part in the celebration of the Word of God and
to receive blessings and other sacramentals. One who dies
during the catechumenate receives a Christian burial.
REMEMBER
Those Who Have Gone Before Us
Catholics have long seen November as a time for
remembering the communion of saints and praying
for all the souls who have gone before us. A "Book
of Remembrance" will be on a podium by the votive
lights where you may write the names of our faithful
departed to be especially remembered in the
Liturgies during the month of November.
The New 2015 St. Joseph Sunday
Missal will be available in the parish
office. The cost is $4.00 each.
PRINCE OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
FAITH SHARING
Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Risk Security in Using Gifts Well
INVITATION TO PRAY
Pause for a few moments of silence and enter more deeply into
the presence of God.
Song: “What Shall I Give,” Scott Soper, OCP
Proclaim the Gospel of Matthew 25:14-30
“Well Done, My Good and Faithful Servant.”
As you listen to the gospel be attentive to a word, a phrase, a
question, an image, or a feeling that emerges. Reflect on this
quietly or share it aloud. (The other readings for this Sunday
are Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31; Psalm 128; and 1
Thessalonians 5:1-6.).
INVITATION TO REFLECT
The parables of Jesus in this, his last major set of
instructions found in Matthew’s Gospel, are rich with meaning
for us, both individually and as a Church. In this particular
parable of the talents, we who live in the “in between” time,
waiting for the fullness of the reign, are reminded that we are to
live in harmony with the earth. The treasures of the earth, the
gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the charisms of the Church are in
our safekeeping. The question that is set before us is, “Will we
risk failure or even loss to increase the treasure trove of God’s
abundance?”
The talent, or Greek talanton, referred to in the gospel
was a huge monetary silver coin that represented a lifetime of
earnings. The first servant had five lifetimes of earnings, the
next had two, and the third servant was responsible for one
lifetime of earnings. More importantly, this reminds us of the
generous abundance of God. We all are blessed with a treasure
of gifts and graces that flow unearned into our daily lives. We,
the Church, are abundantly blessed and gifted to bring forth the
reign of God – that state of justice, peace, and communion for
which we all long. In a culture that continually preys upon our
fears, the myth of scarcity prevails. We do not have enough
money, time or resources. But Jesus continually reminds us,
from the feeding of the crowds to this parable of the talents,
that God’s generosity will not be outdone.
Furthermore, the question of stewardship over such a
huge treasure is vital to God’s plan. The servant to whom the
master gave the least treasure to tend feared the master, and
even more, feared failure. He could not risk allowing the talent
to grow and multiply, so he buried it. Burying, hoarding, and
stubborn clinging to what is freely given was adamantly
condemned by Jesus. How can we hang to what was not ours
in the first place? The gifts, the talents are given to be used for
the sake of the whole. We all possess a multitude of charisms
or gifts, entrusted to us by the graciousness of God. For our
part, we must develop and hone them, generously offering
them for the benefit of the community, of humankind and the
earth. The Church too, is abundantly blessed. We, who are
the Church, just see to it that these blessings pour over into
society to benefit all of creation.
November 16, 2014
The reward for such generous self-giving is to be
given even greater responsibility. We can never think our task
is complete. We are asked to do and to be even more, so that
our circle of influence will grow larger and larger. Look at the
simple gesture of compassion toward one dying person that
was the only goal of Mother Teresa. She never tried to change
whole systems of poverty; her only mission was to be with one
person at a time. Yet her circle of influence affected the whole
world.
INVITATION TO GROUP SHARING
1. What does this parable say about my current spiritual
growth? What changes do I need to make in my life?
2. How rich in treasure and talent are those in my group?
What are some talents I can name for each person
present?
3. Look at the rich treasure of the Church community in
which you worship. What are some treasures that are
being given for the benefit of the whole parish? The
larger social community?
4. What are some of the obstacles that keep me and others in
our group from fully giving of our time and talent? What
will I or we do to overcome these obstacles?
INVITATION TO ACT
Determine a specific action (individual or group) that flows
from your sharing.
These should be your primary
consideration. When choosing an individual action determine
what you will do and share it with the group. When choosing
a group action, determine who will take responsibility for
different aspects of the action. The following are secondary
suggestions:
1. Take inventory of the gifts you have used in the past year.
From these determine some action you can take to further
develop the gift you have been given.
2. Name the fears that keep you from offering your gifts to
the parish or your social community. Pray each day this
week to overcome these fears, remembering that fear of
the Lord, that is awe for God’s generosity, erases human
fear.
3. In your group, take time to name your charisms, affirm one
another in the gifts you see, and encourage one another in
using these talents to meet the needs of others.
4. Look at the wonders of creation together by taking a walk,
having an outdoor picnic, or sitting together at a campfire.
Name and give thanks for the gifts of the earth that are in
our safekeeping. Determine how you will be in a better
relationship with the earth.
5. Reflect on the gifts of a family member, a friend, a
coworker, or a neighbor. Pray for that person.
THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
INVITATION TO CLOSING PRAYER
Give thanks to God (aloud or silently) for insights, for desires
awakened, for directions clarified, for the gift of one another’s
openness and sensitivity. Conclude with the following:
Generous God, you have blessed us with abundant treasures.
We offer our thanks for your graciousness by naming and
claiming these gifts together.
Begin a litany of thanks, using the following phrase to
initiate the naming of these gifts:
“I acknowledge your gift of ……… in my life. Grace me to
use this talent for the benefit of others.”
When all have finished, close with the following words:
May your kingdom come. May your will be done as we offer
these gifts for the sake of all. Amen.
