ACCOMPANIST POSITION DESCRIPTION UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH As of November 4, 2014 SUMMARY The Accompanist will provide music (excepting choral music) for all worship services. S/he works under the supervision of the Supervisory Committee, a sub-committee of the Personnel Committee. S/he works under the Minister and in close cooperation with, the Music Director, other staff members and committees as needed. QUALIFICATIONS The Accompanist must have advanced keyboard skills in both piano and organ. S/he must be familiar with a broad repertoire of sacred and secular keyboard music, including but not limited to classical pieces. S/he must be able to work closely with the Music Director and other musical artists as an accompanist during rehearsal and worship. Previous experience in a related position is strongly preferred. The Accompanist should have or gain an understanding of UU history and values, as well as UU congregational structure and governance. S/he should be able to help build and organize a music program in a congregation, and join in collaboratively planning and leading worship services. S/he should have familiarity with musical resources, including hymnody and other forms of congregational singing. S/he should support the congregation’s efforts toward being anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and multi-culturally competent. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performance duties: a. Perform a variety of appropriate solo organ and piano music for all Sunday and holiday services from the last Sunday of August until the third Sunday in June. b. Accompany soloists and the choir as needed during weekly choir practices and during worship services. c. Accompany the congregation when hymns are sung during the services, and, when appropriate, help lead congregational singing. 2. a. b. c. d. e. f. g. Administrative duties: Assist the Music Director with planning the music program for all worship services. Participate in scheduled meetings with the Minister. Coordinate with the Office Administrator to have the music program published in the weekly service bulletins. Provide for music when the choir doesn’t perform. Coordinate with the Office Administrator for regular tuning, maintenance and repair of the organ and pianos within the budget. Keep a written record of all repairs made. Evaluate and approve any requests for organ or piano use in writing and demonstrate proper use of the organ to any outside organists. h. Maintain a list of qualified and approved organists and pianists with the Office Administrator. i. When requested and in consultation with the Music Director, assist the Assistant for Services in finding musicians available to participate in summer services. 3. Budget: a. Report needs to Board of Trustees in writing b. Contract for instrument maintenance as needed within the constraints of the annual budget. Duties and responsibilities of this position are approved by the Personnel Committee. Salary and benefits are established by the Board of Trustees. All staff members are ultimately responsible to the Board of Trustees.
