St. Gregory the Great
Mission Statement
St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds.
We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling,
we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our
word and example.
We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community
in which we live.
BOOK OF THE MONTH
Our spiritual book of the month for November is The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton (New York:
Harcourt, Brace, and Co., 1948) Thomas Merton (1915-1968) is one of the most influential American Catholic
authors of the twentieth century. His autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, has sold millions of copies and
has been translated into over twenty languages. A modern-day Confessions of Saint Augustine, The Seven Storey
Mountain is one of the most influential religious works of the twentieth century. It tells of the growing restlessness of a brilliant and passionate young man whose search for peace and faith leads him, at the age of twenty-six,
to take vows in one of the most demanding Catholic orders--the Trappist monks. It is available for $10.01 from
Barnes and Noble and for $9.87 from Amazon.
YOUNG PEOPLE’S ICON WORKSHOP
Due to the overwhelming success of our adult and now our Children's Icon Workshop, we will now be offering
the same for pre-teens (8-12). Joe Malham will conduct a two day workshop, in the Icon Studio on the third floor
of the Parish Center, in which the young people will write their own icon under his instruction. The workshop is
scheduled for the weekend of December 6 and 7 from Noon-3 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The cost for the
two days, including snacks, is $35 per student and a parent or authorized guardian must accompany each student
each day. Please call Joe at the Parish Center to register (773-561-3546) or email him at [email protected].
The class will be limited to 8 students so please register soon. Students must be registered by November 12 and if a
minimum of four are not enrolled by then the workshop will be rescheduled for early 2015.

**Shoe and Sock Donations benefit Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program. The Refugee
Resettlement Program provides comprehensive resettlement services to refugees from various regions of
the world during their period of adaptation to a new environment, leading them to greater self-sufficiency.
Activities are planned and arranged to address problems specific to individual/family refugees such as
linguistic and cultural barriers, housing, financial assistance, interpretation and mediation services,
transportation, orientation and case management. Emphasis is placed on early employment for those who
are eligible.
*All the money raised will go toward the construction to St. Gregory's gym building which is currently
undergoing renovations which include adding a handicap accessible ramp and updates to the bathrooms.

YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME
Entrust
As we gather around the bedside of our dying loved ones, we entrust them to the Lord.
We can do no more. At some point, although medicine can offer some comfort, it can no
longer keep them alive. We face within ourselves and in our loved ones the poverty and
dependence that has always marked our lives, even when we have not been conscious of it.
Now, we entrust them to God, to the saints, and to the angels. And when we do so, we
acknowledge that we belong to a great communion of holy men and women and of spirits
who serve the living God. What seems to be the most solitary, the loneliest moment of our lives, when we are
dying, is rather a time of communion and connection. The whole Church in heaven and on earth gathers. The
whole Church in this moment of entrustment is our great sacrament of communion in the Lord.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need to do is be
faithful in “small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given. When you
give furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul,
You are sharing God’s extravagant love.
Remember to drop off your gently used clothing donations at the SVDP drop box located in the South
Parking Lot of the gym building. For furniture donations, SVDP will pick up from your home. Please call
Lavetta at 773-779-6700 to schedule a pick-up.—Thank you for your support.
MINISTRY OF THE WEEK—SACRISTAN
The sacristan comes one day a week and attends to the clean linens and to the art and environment of the Church.
The sacristan orders wine, hosts, candles and other liturgical items that are used for our Eucharistic liturgies,
coordinates decorating the Church at Christmas and Easter, launders the cassocks and surpluses used by the
altar servers as well as the albs used by the priests and places in the pews the envelopes that are used for special
collections. Volunteers are needed to help with laundry and with the cleaning and decorating of the Church at
Christmas and Easter. The contact person for Sacristan is Dan Creed. 773-561-3546
SCRIPTURE STUDY
Scripture study will take place on Monday, November 17 after the 8:30AM Mass in the Parish Center lower level.
