JACKRABBIT NOTES
South Dakota State travels to Peoria, Ill. to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional Friday
at 1 p.m. The Jackrabbits will look to send a runner to the NCAA Championships for the
second-straight year.
The Last Time Out
The Jackrabbits ran at the Summit League Championship Nov. 1 in Fargo, N.D. The men
took second, bolstered by Brendan Sage’s second-place finish, while the women claimed
third, being narrowly edged out by host North Dakota State for second by three points.
Sage Soaring
Brendan Sage
Sage has been the top South Dakota State finisher in every meet this season. A two-time
Summit League Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the sophomore ran to top-five
finishes in five meets this season and recorded his first collegiate win at the SDSU Classic
Oct. 4. At the Summit League championship, Sage claimed all-Summit League first team
honors after placing second with a time of 25:26.7. His second-place finish is the best by
a Jackrabbit sophomore.
Kraft and Capra Cruising
Drew Kraft and Trevor Capra each earned all-Summit League second team honors by finishing 10th (25:56.9) and 14th (25:59.5) respectively at the championship meet. Capra
made an all-Summit League team for the first time in his career while Kraft’s 10th-place
finish was his best performance at the championship meet.
Jessica Eibs
Branick Blazing
Connor Branick only ran at four of South Dakota State’s six meets this season, but each
time he was among the top four Jackrabbits to cross the line. Competing in his first Summit League Championship since 2012, the redshirt sophomore took home second team
honors by placing 11th with a time of 25:57.3, less than a second behind Kraft.
Eibs Igniting
Jessica Eibs became only the second Jackrabbit to capture all-Summit League first team
honors in back-to-back years, joining Ashley Storm, who accomplished the feat in 2008
and 2009. Eibs placed seventh at the championship meet with a time of 22:22.1. Last
year, she claimed sixth with a time of 21:55.4.
Juniors Leading the Charge
On the women’s side, juniors have led the way throughout the season. Five of the seven
runners making the trip to Peoria come from the class of 2016. At the Oz Memorial and
Roy Griak Invitational, the first five Jackrabbits to cross the line were juniors. At the SDSU
Classic and Bradley Pink Classic, five of the top six SDSU finishers were juniors.
At the Summit League Championship, the three Jackrabbits who earned all-Summit
League honors were juniors: Eibs, Cheyanne Bowers and Laura Lawton. Bowers and Lawton made the second team after placing ninth (22:28.8) and 14th (22:46.1) respectively.
Kirsten Anderson (22:56.3) was the fifth South Dakota State runner to cross the line.
The 2013 NCAA Midwest Regional
Trent Lusignan became the first Jackrabbit to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships by placing second with a personal-best 10k time of 30:30.3. As a team, the men
placed 10th out of 29 teams, with Anthony Bongard (57th, 33:03.3), Joel Reichow (58th,
33:28.1) and Sage (88th, 32:17.3) rounding out the Jackrabbit top four.
The women’s team took 15th out of 30 teams. Bowers tied Storm for the highest finish by
a Jackrabbit at the regional meet, claiming 40th with a personal-best 6k time of 21:27.5.
Courtney Neubert (72nd, 21:51.2), Eibs (85th, 21:57.8) and Alex Suhr (107th, 22:13.9)
completed the South Dakota State top four.
