Dear Members,
As we come into the month of November, we do so with joy and excitement. October was absolutely
wonderful in so many ways! Our San Francisco Giants led the way! The momentum of fall is with us, as we
look forward to an absolutely wonderful November and holiday season.
Events in November include some significant Sunday activities: a Library Open House on Sunday,
November 2nd. Check out the library’s new look and wonderful collection of artifacts; a superb fashion show
on Sunday, November 16th, sponsored by the LAOH, Division 2; the Annual Deceased Members’ Mass on
Sunday, November 23rd at 10:00 a.m. It is with great respect that we celebrate the lives of those who gave
so much.
I would like to rectify an omission that occurred in the October Bulletin. When thanking the
wonderful Building Committee and the incredible volunteers who helped during the August closure of the
Center, I left out the name of one of the primary contributors on the Committee: Gerry Cassidy. Apologies
to Gerry and kudo’s to him and those who were mentioned in the October Bulletin for their stellar contribution
to our beloved Center.
I am bringing my large family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving with the UICC’s incredible
Thanksgiving dinner. I hope to see many of you with your family, friends and others as our very talented
chefs, kitchen folks and servers are gearing up to give you the very best.
There is a surprise offering in the mix, Rosie Keehan, our Rose of Tralee, is organizing a “Last
Rose of Summer” competition for those of us who “barely” miss the age cut-off for the Rose of Tralee
competition. This event will serve as a kick-off for the January Rose of Tralee event. Yours truly will be in the
competition and more information regarding date and time will be forthcoming. Others who will admit to
being “around” my age are welcome to inquire in regard to joining the competition. More information will
be forthcoming.
As mentioned in the email blast, there will be no General Membership Meeting in November as
Thanksgiving falls on our usual meeting date. Although we usually do not have a membership meeting in
December, we will have a “Membership Appreciation Meeting” in December this year. Your Board has set the
date for this “first” on December 11th. Stay tuned by referring to the December Bulletin message. Additionally
we are going to have a traditional Irish holiday variety show, “An Irish Christmas”, on Wednesday, December
10th. Please calendar the date.
Your Board of Directors and I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity of serving as your Board
this year. I would like to close with best wishes to the family of John (our former BOD President) and Arleen
Gallagher on the marriage of their son, Tim, in Milwaukee (brrrrrrr) on November 22nd. The word is they
have found an Irish piper and dancers for the celebration in Wisconsin!!
In Caring Unity,
Judith Kell, President

of
Thanksgiving
May you live a long life,
Full of gladness and health,
With a pocket full of gold,
As the least of your wealth.
May the dreams you hold dearest,
Be those which come true,
The kindness you spread,
Keep returning to you.

PATRICK J. DOWLING LIBRARY NEWS
TREASURES OF THE
PATRICK J. DOWLING LIBRARY
“ you never know what you are going to
find when you go through
the collection of books at the library”
—Pat D’Arcy
A few months ago long time volunteer, Pat D’Arcy, was sorting through some books at the
library when she came upon an anthology of stories about the Bantry Bay area, It Might
Have Been But Yesterday. I am not even sure why she was
looking through those books since she usually catalogs Irish
language books, but fortunately she did since it contains
stories about her uncle, Michael Walsh, and her first cousins,
Frank, Vinnie, and Noel who are still alive and residing in
Bantry. The anthology chronicles the story of how her
uncle was involved in the transportation of petrol that had
come aground in Bantry Bay when a military ship had been
torpedoed during WWI and how the petrol was used by
Sinn Fein to drive voters to polling places and another
story about her cousins involvement with a handball court/
social club. Pat related the stories to her Bantry cousins
on Facebook, who told her to keep sending more stories.
Kind of fun how the stories came to San Francisco from
Bantry in the form of this little anthology and back to Bantry via Facebook.

United Irish Cultural Center ~ 2700 45th Avenue, San Francisco
“… The capacity crowd nearly brought the house down at the end of the evening.” (The Village News)
An Irish Christmas brings just about everything to the table – joy, hope, laughter,
friendship, celebration, of life through storytelling, music, song, and dance in a night
that sparkles with life and a bit of ‘magic!’ Dancers dance through the generations
over brooms, on half doors, around butter churns, into the world of mythology and
out again. Songs spinning out of the mists and into the familiar Silent Night, Little
Drummer Boy and Carol of the Bells, and superb music of the pipes, flutes, fiddles,
button accordion and bodhráns are just the beginning of this great Irish night!
You can be sure of a rip-roaring celebration of Christmas from the heart of glorious
Ireland with a superb team of Irish traditional musicians, dancers from the Kerry
Dance Troupe led by Ciaran Maguire (Magic of the Dance), the Kerry Records voice
squad, and Irish actor Sheelagh Cullen.
We will journey through Christmas in Ireland and celebrate the great tradition of butter
making, chase the wren on St. Stephen’s day, draw down the half door for spectacular
dance, enjoy superb music-making, singing of Christmas carols and great storytelling
in an unforgettable Irish night. Irish folk theatre at its best!
So come and refresh your spirit, dust off the cares of the world and dance home with a smile in your heart
as this joyful night brings you to a wonderful Ireland that echoes so forcefully in millions of hearts throughout
the world. You can be certain of a GREAT IRISH WELCOME!
