Welcome to the 93rd Annual PSAHPERD Convention. As President of the Pennsylvania State
Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, I join President-elect Carl
Kiefer, Past President David Lorenzi, Executive Director Linda Woods Huber, and the entire
PSAHPERD Executive Board in welcoming you to this fantastic event.
My theme “Many Hands, Many Minds, One Goal” is truly a testament to the many
hands and minds who worked so hard in preparing for this convention. I’d like to take the
opportunity to thank the Vice-Presidents, committee chairs, and local planning committee who
have worked tirelessly to ensure a wonderful experience for all of us. This convention includes
programs, meetings, socials, awards, dance gala, and networking for your professional growth
and personal enjoyment. Additionally, I recommend taking a break out of your day to visit
the exhibits. While there, please take a moment to personally thank each exhibitor for
attending our convention and for recognizing that marketing and promoting health, physical
education, physical activity, dance and sport are vital for our students and our educators.
The Convention Program will help you navigate the many convention offerings. Please plan
on coming to Friday morning’s General Session to hear the keynote speaker, Dr. Carolyn
Dumaresq, Pennsylvania’s Acting Secretary of Education. Come and join us in celebrating the
excellence in our profession at Friday’s Awards Luncheon and at Saturday’s Cottrell Banquet.
Have a wonderful convention, and take every opportunity to network, attend the excellent
programs, visit the wonderful exhibits, meet former friends, and have fun! I look forward to
spending the next few days with you here at the beautiful resort of Seven Springs.
Thank you for attending this year’s convention. The Convention Planning Teams, Executive
Board and I are so very appreciative of your ongoing support, professionalism, and contagious
enthusiasm. As a result of your attendance, I hope you return back to your schools and
communities revitalized and energized with new ideas and strategies to promote healthy and
active lifestyles for all.

GREETINGS FROM THE SHAPE AMERICA–EASTERN DISTRICT
As president of SHAPE America Eastern District it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2014
PSAHPERD Convention and bring greetings from the Eastern District. I know that your convention
planners have been working hard to bring you a professional development experience that will provide
you with the latest and greatest activities and practices in your profession. The convention is not only a
time for professional development, but also a time to reconnect with old friends and develop
connections with new colleagues. I am sure you will leave the convention energized and excited about
trying some new ideas with your students.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the 2015 SHAPE America Eastern District Convention
in Springfield, MA, February 5-7, 2015. The Council for Conventions has developed an exceptional
program focused on SHAPE America’s new agenda of preK-16 health and physical education. Shannon
Miller, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist, will be the keynote speaker at the Opening General Session. There
will be a SHAPE America Presidential Youth Fitness Program training as well numerous sessions provided
by state, district, and national teacher of the year recipients. If you are looking for something to do
outside the convention then check out the following sights while in Springfield: Basketball Hall of Fame,
the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden in honor of author Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel (a
Springfield native), the Science Museum and historic Springfield Armory. Visit the SHAPE America Eastern
District website for more details about the convention.
Since I am unable to bring these greetings in person to you in Pennsylvania, I hope to meet and greet
you in Springfield in 2015. On behalf of Eastern District have a fun filled and fantastic PSAHPERD
Convention!!

GREETINGS FROM SHAPE AMERICA
Dear PSAHPERD Friends:
On behalf of my colleagues at the Society of Health and Physical Educators, now known as SHAPE
America, I bring you greetings from your national professional organization. Thank you for inviting me
to your annual state conference. Having grown up outside Philadelphia it is truly a homecoming for me.
This year we will be celebrating our 130th anniversary at the 2015 National Convention & Expo in Seattle,
Washington. One of my personal goals is to have us all begin thinking of SHAPE America as not just a
membership organization, but rather as a cause organization. This means we are united around a
specific cause activated around a needed change that members believe in with all their hearts, are
marching together to accomplish, and are passionate about encouraging others to join.
I think this describes us. We want to change the culture of this country so that every child is supported
in growing up “healthy, physically educated and physically active.” As an organization with a cause we
will educate, engage and empower ourselves and others in the knowledge and strategies needed to
make our vision a reality.
We will:
• Shape a future where healthy is the norm
• Shape a standard of excellence in physical education and health education
• Shape the lifelong habits of young people
• Shape and influence policy related to physical education and health education.
I hope I can count on you to add your voice, support and energy to realizing our vision—Healthy
People – Physically Educated and Physically Active.
Sincerely,
Dolly Lambdin, Ed.D.

Community Program: M. Kathleen (Kat) Ellis
Marcy Jack
Dr. M. Kathleen (Kat) Ellis is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at West Chester University. She
specializes in Adapted Physical Education, Deaf Studies, and Disability Studies. A 2001 graduate of Michigan
State University with a PhD in Kinesiology (Adapted PE) and Deaf Education, Dr. Ellis started her career at
the University of Rhode Island before coming to West Chester University in 2009. Her first semester at
WCUPA she developed the Adapted Physical Activities Lifetime Fitness program for young adults with
disabilities. Each semester the program introduces and educates over 20 young adults with disabilities
about various forms of fitness activities promoting a physical active life style across their lifespan. The
program is in its 6th year and recently partnered with Dr. Jeanie Subach to provide nutrition education in
collaboration with the fitness program. Dr. Ellis’ main goal is to ensure that all youth with disabilities have
an enjoyable and motivating avenue for being both physically active and “nutrition smart” in order to
prevent common secondary conditions, especially obesity and sedentary lifestyles. In the future Dr. Ellis
plans on using her expertise as one of two Deaf sports experts in the U.S. to provide similar programs to
Deaf youth and their families.
PSAHPERD and the American Heart Association are proud to present the 2014 Heart Award to Marcy L.
Jack. Marcy is the physical education teacher and Jump Rope for Heart coordinator at the Central
Elementary School in the Hampton Township School District. Marcy has been teaching for twenty-nine
years and conducting JRFH events at the Wyland and Central Elementary Schools for fourteen years.
In the past, Dr. Ellis has served as an aquatics specialist at Camp Abilities at SUNY-Brockport and WCUPA.
She also holds certification as Master Teacher of Adapted Aquatics having been taught by colleague and
expert in the field, Dr. Monica Lepore. Dr. Ellis has over 20 publications related to Deafness and disability
and has also presented on various topics at multiple conferences, including PSAHPERD, EDA, SHAPE,
NAFAPA, and IFAPA
PSAHPERD is proud to recognize M. Kathleen Ellis as the 2014 Adapted Physical Education Community
Award winner.
According to Kelly Wilding, AHA, “ Marcy exemplifies the Best Practices of the American Heart Association
through her phenomenal Jump Rope for Heart events. While her fundraising efforts are outstanding, her
commitment to heart health education makes a strong impact on her school community. Marcy has raised
more than $82,000 over the years to fight heart disease and stroke and she was also responsible for rallying
the Physical Education team at Hampton elementary schools to also participate in Jump Rope for Heart
events. There’s no doubt that students moving from the elementary to middle school level at Hampton
have a solid foundation in how to live heart healthy lifestyles. Thank you, Marcy, for all of your HEART work
through the years.”
The key to her success is a fun, energetic Kick-Off Assembly. The gym is decorated with heart healthy
messages, posters and colorful decorations. There is upbeat music and the students demonstrate various
jumping styles and skills. One of the highlights of her event is the participation of her principal and teachers.
Marcy’s 3-day event is held for grades K-5 during her Physical Education classes. She stresses the
importance of being a Heart Hero. Another highlight for Marcy was walking on the field at PNC Park with
her top fundraisers.
Marcy is active with PSAHPERD serving on the Executive Board as the Convention Exhibits Chair. She has
also served on the PSAHPERD Sites Committee and Sponsorship Committee. She participated in a Demo
Team Clinic in 2010 with the American Heart Association.
Congratulations Marcy L. Jack, recipient of the 2014 PSAHPERD Heart Award.
