Late Breaker: Investigations into the cluster of acute neurologic disease temporally associated with the large
enterovirus D68 (EVD68) US outbreak continues. To date, 12 children have been admitted to CHCO with this
condition. The first case had an onset date of August 4, 2014 when enterovirus/rhinovirus detections
(including EVD68) peaked. The last case had an onset date of October 11, 2014, as these viruses began to
wane. Ten children had focal limb weakness and cranial nerve dysfunction, with MRI showing lesions of the
brainstem and spinal cord grey matter. Most of the children have yet to fully recover. A preceding respiratory
illness was common in affected children, with EVD68 detected in respiratory specimens from 4 of the cases.
CDC has verified reports of 70 similar cases in 16 states.
