<Foundation Certificate in Chinese as a Foreign/ Second Language (Cantonese) > is recognized under the Qualifications Framework.
Widely spoken in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong Province, Cantonese is one of the seven major dialects of China. It is also
the most widely spoken Chinese dialect by overseas Chinese communities. Its origin dates from as early as the Qin Dynasty
(221 to 206 BC). During the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 AD), the occupation of northern China by foreign invaders caused an
exodus of the Han Chinese to southern China, where the Cantonese dialect took shape. Hong Kong is the only place in China
where people think in their own dialect (Cantonese) and use it officially to discuss serious issues. Its long heritage and countless
ties to ancient Chinese culture, together with the fact that Cantonese has far-reaching influence on the pop culture among the
Asian Pacific region, all these have made Cantonese a very interesting and essential language.

The Centre
Founded in 1963 under the joint auspices of New Asia College and the Yale-China Association, the Centre became part of the
Chinese University in 1974 and has been responsible for the teaching of Chinese language (Putonghua and Cantonese) of
University students as well as other Putonghua and Cantonese learners. Courses are offered in two different series: for nonnative speakers and for native speakers of Chinese. All the series have different levels to meet the needs and aptitude of
students.
The Programme
Cantonese training modules:
At beginner level, the modules focus on oral skills and listening comprehension, with proficiency-oriented activities based on
useful vocabulary items, daily expressions and a wide variety of patterns. For reference only, students are usually expected to
spend no less than 4 hours a week on revision to make progress. By the end of the foundation programme, students are expected
to use Cantonese to ask and respond to simple questions, convey minimal meaning and satisfy some immediate needs.

Pocket Dictionary and Chinese English Pocket Dictionary to facilitate their learning.

Putonghua, also known as Mandarin, the standard speech and the official language of mainland China spoken by more
than 1 billion native speakers, is increasingly regarded as the language with equal importance to English. Along with the
booming economy and the countless business opportunities related to China, learning Putonghua seems becoming inevitable for
many, and the education systems in some foreign countries have made learning of Putonghua compulsory to students.

The Programme
The programme aims to give all-rounded training in Chinese (Putonghua) with emphasis on oral skill and listening
comprehension. All the four speech functions namely listening, speaking, reading and writing will be taught. The programme
consists of proficiency-oriented activities based on useful vocabulary items, daily expressions and a wide variety of
patterns. Simplified Chinese characters will be taught in ALL Putonghua courses. For reference only, students are usually
expected to spend no less than 4 hours a week on revision to make progress.
The Elementary Courses familiarize students with the fundamental pronunciation in Putonghua through different activities. By
the end of the foundation programme, students are expected to use Putonghua to ask and respond to simple questions, convey
minimal meaning and satisfy some immediate needs. They should have the ability to read individual words and short phrases in
real life contexts and understand the formation of Chinese characters (e.g. stroke order, etc.)

The sounds and tones of Putonghua (“Hanyu Pinyin” or Putonghua

七至八月六週課程，可分上下兩部各三週進修
＜粵語(華語人士) 證書＞在資歷架構下獲得認可。
粵語，又稱廣東話、廣府話及廣州話，是漢藏語系漢語族的聲調語言，中國七大方言之一，是美國、
加拿大及澳洲等的華人社區中使用人數最多的漢語，全球以粵語為母語者高達 1.2 億人。粵語也是除了
普通話外，唯一在外國大學有獨立研究的中國漢語。香港及澳門是中國城巿之中唯一可以用自己的母語
方言（廣東話）思想及進行官方討論的地方。粵語的起源和發展成熟的年代遠在宋代，歷史悠久，與中
國古代文化息息相關，也對現今潮流文化影響深遠，是一個既有趣又實用的語言。

研習所
雅禮中國語文研習所在新亞書院(New Asia College)及美國耶魯大學雅禮協會 (Yale-China Association) 的支
持下創辦於 1963 年，1974 年成為香港中文大學的一個教學部門，承擔教授大學生及中外人士漢語的任務。課程
分廣東話及普通話、對外漢語及對華漢語不同系列，課程旨在培養及改善學生的語言水平，提高他們以普通話或
廣東話溝通的能力。
研習所自 2005 年起，通過大學擴展教育課程局(UEXB)申請各種證書及文憑課程，公開讓中外人士進修高
素質普通話及粵語課程，也是香港所有本地大學中，提供普通話／粵語證書課程最大的大學單位。來自九十多國
的漢語研修生人數每年超過 2000。
課程大綱
本課程為對廣東話有興趣、來港工作或定居的華語人士而設，通過生活化情景、實用的詞彙、簡明的語法介紹及密
集的語音練習提高學生運用粵語的能力。減少甚至脫離地方口音，融入香港的生活。課程由淺入深、互相銜接、自成體系。
本課通過精簡講授，以香港的社會及文化為題材，使學員瞭解並熟悉普粵在語音、詞彙、語法等方面的差異，把更多的時
間放在聽、說等方面的綜合訓練，以培養語言技能、尤其是口頭表達能力為目標。
