Friday, 14th November, 2014 Issue 12/2014-15 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK National Merit Scholar-- Congratulations to Rohan Soorabthula Rohan, one of our seniors, has received a letter of Commendation for his outstanding performance on the PSAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Very well done. The Arts in Education Last Friday our students participated in a magical musical concert. Well done one and all. The event took place in a packed room at the Park Hyatt. At the end of the evening, we reflected, why are the arts so important in education? Here are seven reasons adapted from Dee Dickenson. Arts are so important because: They are languages that all people speak that cut across racial, cultural, social, educational, and economic barriers and enhance cultural appreciation and awareness Arts are so important because: The provide opportunities for self-expression, bringing the inner world into the outer world of concrete reality. Arts are so important because: They develop both independence and collaboration Arts are so important because: They make it possible to use personal strengths in meaningful ways and to bridge into understanding sometimes difficult abstractions through these strengths; Arts are so important because: They improve academic achievement -- enhancing test scores, attitudes, social skills, critical and creative thinking. Arts are so important because: They exercise and develop higher order thinking skills including analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and "problem-finding”. And finally, Arts are so important because: They provide the means for every student to learn. It is important to remember this as we develop as a whole person at ISH. 1 International Day Tuesday saw ISH in a sea of vibrant color as everyone dressed up in national costume and attire. See pictures later in the newsletter. The theme of the day: “Internationalism’ was discussed in small groups by the students. Here is a wordle summarizing their findings: Building Blocks of Internationalism Big thank you again to all the parents for the Food. The PTA received 122 plates – quite incredible really!!! WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS There is a lost blue Canon digital camera, if found, please return to School lost and found. HYDERABAD SCHOOLS CHORAL FESTIVAL: NOVEMBER 6TH AND 7TH 2 Since the beginning of the school year, the Elementary and Secondary Choirs of ISH have been working hard and singing for several hours each week, trying to master the skill in every way possible. By putting together songs from a variety styles and cultures, we managed to put together the perfect set list, but the best part was when we realized our hard work truly paid off. Last week, ISH hosted the 2014 Hyderabad Schools Choral Festival, which involved about 100 students who came from schools all over Hyderabad. Stonehill International School even flew out all the way from Bangalore, just to participate and be with us. Not only did we get to meet people of our age who had the same passion for music as we did, but we also got to hear a variety of songs which featured musical elements from all sorts of genres. We got to collaborate with the other students, and we learned a group of songs together. We also got to meet Ms. Pauline Warjri from Shillong, who was not only an inspiration herself, but who also told stories that changed our perception of music and even inspired us to do better than our best. We went through exciting workshops and intense rehearsals, where we learned new techniques and skills that continue to prove extremely helpful. Finally, during the concert on Friday evening, we all went up with our newfound friendships and sang together, as one big choir. In fact, we could say we were one very big but very happy family. At the end of it all, we had all formed the same opinion: It was an experience we would definitely remember for the rest of our lives. 3 International day Celebration at ISH: November 11th, 2014 The spirit of internationalism was in the air as students, teachers and parents proudly wore their national colours and costumes in celebration of International Day. The day kick started with discussions on what internationalism was and how ISH students were impacted by this. Their reflective and insightful thoughts were then posted on the wall, aptly called 'The Building Blocks of Internationalism.' Overall, it was a wonderful day with food, fun, flags and meaningful learning. 4 5 Language Day Celebration at ISH: November 11th,2014 Let's Celebrate Languages! Fêtons les Langues ! Celebremos las lenguas! A variety of stations divided according to languages were abuzz with activities. While the calligraphy corners catered to all having their names scripted in the different languages of the world, at the tourist bureau, the elementary school children were enjoying learning new words and phrases in different tongues. The grade 11 students moved around as media persons interviewing teachers, students and parents. All cheered while everyone brushed up their language skills trying to express their opinions in the National Language Hindi. Traditional games were conducted at every stall giving all a chance to savor the different cultures and at the photo booth corners all were posing with smiling faces with symbolic backgrounds of the countries. The entire community of enthusiastic parents, pro-active teachers, ‘eager to share their learning students’ summed up the vibrant atmosphere. The Language Department thanks the parents who came forward to participate in ’Let’s Celebrate Languages’ 6 Book Fair Magic at ISH! The two-day book fair by Scholastic was a success. Our students had a great time browsing and selecting books that they wanted for their personal collections. On Monday, students visited the stall outside the MPH and filled in 'Wish Lists' that were provided by the Scholastic representatives. On Tuesday, parents and students hit the stall and bought up a storm. Thank you to all the parents and students, who bought the books. Thanks to the great sale, the school library was able to procure a decent amount of new books. Scholastic also added to our Service Learning project by donating 3 boxes of books for ISH to further donate to a school/ organisation in need. All members of our school associated with the production, including faculty, are toiling away with just two Saturday practices and four weekday practices to go, until the date of the performance. Props have begun to be used in scenes and the first full run through was completed last Saturday; one actor said “I feel the production is coming along smoothly for now. However I think we still need to refine and improve our performance in some of the larger scenes.” Overall the date of 28th November is fast approaching and our practices have risen to a more serious degree, with hopes to even integrate costumes and the full assortment of props before the performance. So much for the production’s progress, as the production team looks forward to seeing a wonderful audience on the day of our “Merchant of Venice” staging.
