Hi Everyone,
The fall riding season came roaring in here in East Tennessee.
Always look forward to cooler temps and beautiful fall colors after a
long hot summer. Those of us who may have invested in electric riding gear can look forward to many more nice enjoyable days out in
the countryside.
Had a really great day to ride for a little impromptu ride to
enjoy some of the fall colors. I picked one of my favorite rides on the
Goldwing and even discovered a new place to eat. The Green Tomato proved to be a definite destination for future rides, hard to beat
the mountain riding either. If you happen to find that hidden jewel
out riding make sure to share your experience with the rest of the
membership.
Many of our chapter officers will be attending the annual operations meeting again this year, always a good time to meet folks
from the other Tennessee chapters and share ideas. If anyone has
questions or concerns that we cannot answer we promise to get
some guidance form the District team at the OPS meeting, let us
know.
I know I had mentioned our upcoming Event and Ride planning meeting on the 22nd of November but wanted to once again
remind you all to attend a fun day at our place. We will have lunch
and put together our schedule for the 2015 season. (Please note the
date has changed from the originally scheduled 15th—our OPS
meeting will be that day so we needed to make a change.) If you
are unable to make the meeting jot down some of your ideas and
pass them on to someone who will be there, we want input from all
our membership.
Look forward to seeing you all at our November monthly
meeting next Tuesday the 4th and make sure you take time to
VOTE! Is It game night time yet???

Tom & Kathy led 19 other members of TN-B on a very enjoyable impromptu ride to check out the fall colors, using a really nice route though
some nice scenery, fun roads, and a
really nice stop for a late lunch. We
had some fun twisties to enjoy, for
those that like that, but none so extreme that you could see your bike’s
tail-lights, which Loretta was happy about - she says
she likes the fun sweeping curves but not those hairpins. The majority of the foliage was still showing
more green than anything else, but we did see some
reds and oranges mixed in along the route. With the
predicted cold coming soon, that will probably
change and we’ll see more colors soon.
toward Bean Station, with a stop at a new
restaurant for many of us, the Fried Green
Tomato. They were ready for us, even
though there were more of us than Kathy
had told them to expect, and we all had
quite a nice late lunch. Leaving from
there, some of us split off for their own
route back home, while others continued
on to a stop at the Veteran’s Overlook.
What an awesome view from up there!
From there all that was left was just the
ride home, with members peeling off as they came to
the place best for them. All in all it was an absolutely
gorgeous day for a ride. It started out cool, but most
of
We met up at the MacDonald’s in Jacksboro and
headed out north on 63, a quick stop at the Hardee’s
in Harrogate for a potty stop, a few slurping up some
needed coffee, and of course we had to indulge in the
famous “Kathy’s Kookies”! After the quick break, it
was back on the road for a continuation on 63. The
comment was made that 63 from Jacksboro to Harrogate has GOT to be the straightest and flattest section
of road anywhere in TN, but north of US-25E is a totally different story, a really nice curvy road for us to
enjoy, and the comment
was heard over the CB
that for at least one of
the riders, this was their
first ever ride on that
section, and they were
enjoying it. We continued on to Sneedville
us
were
properly
“layered” in our gear,
and at the different
stops, you could see the
layers coming off till we
were all enjoying the
ride in a bright sunny,
mid-70’s day, clear skies, we couldn’t have asked for
anything better. What a great way to enjoy our area,
and our friends.

We've had some beautiful
days for riding this fall and our
ride to Panama City on Friday,
Oct. 10th was no exception. Even though we had to
suit up in our rain gear as we left the Lafollette area,
we shed it by the time we met the rest of the group
in Loudon an hour later. (Our group being Wally,
Joann, Emily and grandson, Christopher, Bobbi &
Kyle, Tom& Debbie, Jack & Debbie, Jerry & Irene
and daughter, Melanie and fiancé Curtis, and Chuck
and Pat.
Wally led our
group of 16 (8 bikes
and a car) through
the back roads and
small towns, very
little traffic, beautiful scenery, making for an enjoyable ride.
Overnight stay in LaGrange GA, before heading
on to Panama City. Had to make a stop for lunch at
Dobb's BBQ restaurant in Dothan, AL before leaving the heavy traffic there and getting on route 231
for a pleasant ride into Panama City.
Accommodations at Seaside Villa
were great, for most of us. We relaxed around the pool and were entertained by Tom, Debbie, Jack and
Debbie moving their luggage from
one building to another, across the courtyard, then
back again. They were eventually given two nice
units to reward them for all the inconvenience
Sat. night, our restaurant offered all you can eat
shrimp, much to the delight of Jerry, Kyle and Anthony (he had joined up with us at Panama City) It
was thought that shrimp tails were seen coming out
their ears. Not a good experience for Kyle. About
3am he began to have trouble breathing and had to
be taken to the hospital and treated for an allergic
reaction. We were glad to have a car available
(Jerry and Irene's daughter) to get him there quickly.
The predicted storm bringing in rain and high
winds on Monday arrived earlier than expected. We
were kind of confined to our habitat until Tues. afternoon. The wind was so strong Mon. night that it
blew Anthony's bike over in the
parking lot, doing a little damage. Tues. night we got together
as a group and enjoyed a lasagna dinner in one of the units.
.Thursday was picked as our
day to ride to Apalachicola
and enjoy lunch at the restaurant famous for its large
fish sandwich. The ride over
was beautiful as some of it is
along the coast. We rode out to St. George Island,
crossing over the long bridge that takes you there.
A trip to Panama City isn't
complete without a visit to
Capt. Anderson's Seafood
Restaurant. Some had already
had their fill of seafood, so they ordered steak. Expensive, but claims
were made that it was the best steak
they had ever had.
All in all, it was a great
trip...relaxing with great friends, lots
of seafood, lots of 5 Crowns and lots of ice
cream. Life is good. Thanks to Wally for all his
planning.

Rally in the Valley, October 9, 10 & 11,
was a fun time as usual. And, as usual for
that rally — we had lots of rain! Because it
was predicted, Tom and I chose to drive the
car. The drive over was beautiful—may have
been sorry at that time that we didn’t ride,
but that feeling didn’t last long. The rains
came . . . and they came . . . and they came.
But
the
rain didn’t slow us
down a bit. Virginia had changed
their location and
the new rally venue was great—with most everything inside. We did our outdoor vendor
shopping when we arrived Thursday and didn’t
have to go out again until the trip home.
The theme of the
rally was Looney Toons,
and as you can see from
the photo, lots of folks
really got into it.
The hi-light of the trip for us was the
Region N Couple of the Year selection. I wish
you all could have been with us when Brian and
Loretta made their presentation. Although
they weren’t selected
they
made
us
proud. All
5 districts had super couples and it was a special time. I recalled when Tom and I were in
the Region selection process 11 years ago;
someone came up to me afterward and told
me how much they enjoyed our presentation,
saying “If I weren’t already a member of
GWRRA I would have to go out and join right
now!” That’s how I felt after this selection
process.
We want to congratulate Glenn & Nanette Mizner of Virginia (2nd from the left)
for being selected Region N Couple of the
Year for 2014-15. And also to say Thank You
to Boyd and Diane Hixson, our own TN folks,
for representing us so well as the 2013-14 Region Couple of the Year.
We hit the jackpot once
again, by winning some cash at
this rally: a small WINGO win,
two 50/50’s, and the 50/50
drawing for the Region N cookbook sales
(everyone who purchased a book filled out a
ticket for the drawing.) All tolled, our take
was $375.
The drive home on Sunday in the pouring rain was made a little more tolerable
knowing we had come away winners, not just
for the cash in our pockets but mostly for the
memories made with old and new friends.

The day started out with a wonderful forecast but it turned a bit cool and overcast. After
meeting at Shoney’s we headed up the mountain on
I-75 and across Rt 63 towards Huntsville where we
started across the back roads towards Clark Range
near where Muddy pond in located. There were 22
of us, most on 2 or 3 wheels, and two couples in a
4-wheeler.
It seemed like everyone and their brother
decided to visit Muddy Pond this day. As we approached the general store there were cars everywhere; finally most of us found a place to park but
we were all spread out so it was difficult to get everyone to decide what and where we’d meet up and
how long everyone needed to shop. Some of the
locals had set up a table out front and were selling
coffee and sweet rolls- nice snack as some didn’t
have breakfast at Shoney’s and some did; made it a
good snack to take care of those grumbling tummies as plans were to eat a bit later at the Pumpkin
Festival.
The crowd was
huge as we approached the Festival
and worked our way
to find some parking.
Again everyone got
scattered everywhere
and again difficult to
get the word out as to
what, where and when
for food and departure etc. I got to take responsibility for the situation - should have made plans back
in Muddy Pond before we left there. Everyone understood and they all took off in different direction
to enjoy the festival, food, car show, pumpkin and
watermelon judging.
The sun finally came
out and made the final leg
home much more comfortable for all. Always a fun
time at the festival since you
got arts and crafts, good
food, and a custom bike and
car show; all you had to do
is pick which direction to
head off to first. Look forward to next year!

Let's talk about stoplights
So you and your bike got caught at a
stoplight alone with a 4-wheeler in front of
you. There's no one behind you, for now at
least. What's the safest way to protect yourself until you get your green light? First,
leave some space, or make some space between your bike and that car in front of you
to use an "escape route". Keep your bike in
first gear and your right hand gripping the
front brake lever to keep your brake light
activated.
While waiting at the traffic light keep
an eye on your mirrors to check for a possibly distracted driver coming from behind. I
always like to give a few quick off and on
grabs to the front brake lever causing the
brake lights to flash to get an approaching
drivers' attention. Remember, some drivers
actually think they can do other things while
driving!
I also recommend installing a brake
light modulator that gets immediate attention from most every driver following your
bike.
This may seem like a lot of extra effort to do while out riding, but being rearended on a bike is not a nice experience; and
after having it happen to me once, I decided
to take these steps so as to minimize the
possibility of it happening again.
One last thought while riding this fall;
IT'S DEER SEASON AGAIN! If you see
one there are probably more running in the
area.
Until next time, ride safer.
Jerry
