Since! joining! the! Indian! River! State! College! family! in! August! 1988,! I! have! been! preparing! for! an!
opportunity!to!lead!a!community!college!to!the!next!level.!During!my!tenure!at!Indian!River!I!have!
had! the! opportunity! to! serve! in! many! roles,! including! adjunct! and! fullPtime! faculty,! department!
chair,!instructional!program!director,!student!club!advisor,!chapter!president!Florida!Association!of!
Community!Colleges,!instructional!dean,!and!vice!president.!!As!part!of!these!responsibilities!I!have!
developed,!nurtured,!and!sustained!positive!relations!and!partnerships!with!area!hospitals,!healthP
care!agencies,!colleges,!and!kP12!school!district.!This!breadth!of!experience!has!provided!me!with!
an! inPdepth! understanding! of! and! appreciation! for! the! exceptional! educational! opportunities! that!

Leadership!Style!
Effectively! performing! in! any! leadership! role! requires! strong! interpersonal! skill! (oral,! written,!
listening),!learning!about!various!audiences!and!individuals,!including!their!diverse!motivation!and!
goals,! finding! common! ground,! and! collaboratively! negotiating! and! executing! solutions! and!
strategies.!!
One!example!of!effective!leadership!is!my!work!in!our!cultural!change.!With!the!increased!focus!on!
student! success! and! declining! budgets! the! decision! was! made! to! invest! the! time! and! energy!
necessary! to! revitalize! our! college! to! become! a! creative,! innovative,! driving! force! within! our!
community! vs.! a! declining! casualty! of! the! status! quo.! The! changing! world! brought! the! realization!
that! the! college! could! no! longer! resist! change! but! needed! to! create! a! culture! that! would! embrace!
change!to!remain!competitive.!Going!to!the!next!level!would!involve!altering!and!rePinventing!the!
institutional! culture.! For! more! than! 40+! years! Indian! River! State! College! realized! above! average!
performance! as! measured! by! conventional! indicators.! Aligned! with! the! traditional! American!
community! college! model,! the! college! experienced! significant! success! forming! partnerships,!
addressing! existing! workforce! needs,! and! providing! academic! programs! that! transfer! to! upperP
division! institutions.! This! model! functioned! well! for! many! years,! but! with! the! onslaught! of! rapidP
fire! changes! in! technology,! globalization,! external! competition,! enrollment! growth! pressures,!
budget!cuts,!student!demand!for!access,!and!changing!demographics,!over!time!it!became!evident!
that!a!new!way!of!doing!business!was!warranted.!!
After! looking! at! several! organizations! that! had! "roadmaps”! in! the! development! of! a! culture,! we!
arrived!at!the!decision!that!if!our!people!design!it!and!build!it!they!will!own!it!–!and!the!culture!will!
truly! be! theirs.! We! developed! our! own! activities! by! analyzing! results! and! listening! carefully! to!
employee! feedback! along! the! way.! Leadership! is! critical! to! creating! a! climate! on! campus! where!
faculty! and! staff! feel! sufficiently! secure! to! have! ‘courageous! conversations’! that! allow! them! to!
question!their!ingrained!practices!and!experiment!with!new!approaches.!
The!goal!was!to!create!an!open,!honest,!candid!culture!that!would!accept!feedback!to!drive!change.!
A! structured! professional! process! where! anonymous! feedback! was! offered! and! received! in! a!
constructive!manner!has!been!the!most!provocative!source!of!enlightenment!for!all!involved.!Key!to!
the!success!was!several!“listening!sessions”!to!gather!feedback!from!employees!who!have!a!vested!
interest!in!the!college!and!want!to!make!the!institution!better.!!This!valuable!information!helped!in!
the!development!of!guiding!principles!and!to!assist!in!refinements!to!the!plan.!!This!led!to!a!change!
from!the!past!traditional!form!of!leadership!to!a!flat,!open,!integrated,!administrative!structure!that!
expects! and! encourages! transPdisciplinary! approaches;! this! has! led! to! advances! in! health! science,!
public!safety,!energy!and!technologies!through!the!flexible!structure!that!includes!administrators,!
faculty! and! staff! working! together! to! challenge! the! status! quo.! This! shift! in! conversations! which!
included! the! integration! and! blending! of! various! disciplines,! allowed! us! to! release! creative! and!

have!held!has!enabled!me!to!further!develop!my!understating!and!appreciation!of!the!faculty!who!
are!committed!to!their!scholarships,!their!teaching,!and!student!success.!
I! have! focused! on! student! success! throughout! my! career.! Some! notables! in! this! effort! include! my!
dissertation! and! technology! integration.! My! dissertation! was! designed! to! study! methodologies! of!
instruction!that!allowed!for!the!most!effective!delivery!of!instruction;!using!technology!along!with!
“flipping! the! class”! strategies! that! improved! student! learning! and! increased! retention! and!
completion.!Although!having!been!involved!in!distance!learning!for!over!10!years!we!have!move!to!
the!next!level!in!2012!by!launching!a!Virtual!Campus.!!This!expanded!opportunities!and!flexibility!
for! students! to! earn! an! entire! degree! online,! as! well! as! hundreds! of! online! courses.! Students! can!
complete! the! associate! degree! and! bachelor's! degree! programs! in! organizational! management,!
business!administration,!and!nursing!online.!The!Virtual!Campus!also!encompasses!a!wide!array!of!
online!student!services.!While!addressing!the!growth!of!onPline!instruction!and!the!need!to!ensure!
student! success,! I! instituted! Quality! Matters! (QM),! a! facultyPcentered,! continuous! improvement!
model! for! assuring! the! quality! of! online! courses! through! peer! review,! professional! development!
workshops!and!the!certification!of!courses.!This!has!improved!student!class!success!by!15%!over!
the!last!year.!!
Budgeting!and!Planning!
It!is!the!president’s!responsibility!to!ensure!the!college’s!viability!and!future!growth!by!effectively!
overseeing! the! allocation! of! resources! and! engaging! in! activities! that! tap! potential! new! funding!
sources.!I!have!always!operated!under!the!fundamental!principle!that!a!college’s!fiscal!effectiveness!
and! efficiency! is! best! handled! as! a! team! effort! with! the! expectation! for! fund! manager! to! operate!
within!their!budgets.!!This!keeps!the!process!inclusive!and!strong.!My!experience!has!allowed!me!to!
be! involved! in! all! areas! of! fiscal! matters,! responsible! to! the! state,! the! federal! government,! grant!
agencies,! and! private! donors.! In! my! current! position! as! Vice! President,! my! functions! include!
financial!management!of!the!college’s!largest!areas,!Applied!Sciences!and!Technology.!!I!am!proud!
that! under! my! leadership! these! functions! operate! efficiently,! while! at! the! same! time! growing!
through!the!implementation!of!strategic!planning!initiatives!and!development!of!new!programs.!

major!capital!construction!projects!P!The!KIGHT!Center!for!Emerging!Technologies!in!October!2005,!
a!$21!million!statePofPthePart!high!technology!education!facility,!The!construction!of!the!$40!million!
Treasure! Coast! Public! Safety! Complex! on! 50! acres! adjacent! to! Main! Campus,! which! serves! as! a!
national!model!for!integrated!training!in!all!areas!of!public!safety!and!law!enforcement!and!the!$20!
million! Brown! Center! for! Innovation! and! Entrepreneurship.! The! Brown! Center! a! “green”! building!
centered! on! the! theme,! “Energizing! the! Economy,”! related! to! biofuels,! solar! and! fuel! cell!
