FEATURED TENANTS
Goodman Arts Centre is a hive of 44 artists
and arts groups ranging from the visual arts to
theatre, music, dance and literary arts, making
it Singapore’s largest arts enclave. This section
introduces two of these artist-residents in every
issue, to allow you a sneak peek into the lives
and works of creators in Singapore.
Mental health is a state of well-being, where
we, as individuals, can realise our abilities,
cope with stress and lead productive lives in
our communities. Some common examples of
mental illness include anxiety, eating disorders
and postnatal depression. Social stigma and
misconception have altered our understanding of
mental health, often leading us to ignore the state
of our own mental health.

original works inspired by society, culture, heritage and relationships.
T.H.E’s aesthetic is distinctly Asian, a powerful fluidity that is rooted in careful control of breath, a
constant in their works that discover what it means to be human.
Consisting of just eight professional dancers, along with 25 semi-professional dancers in their
Second Company, T.H.E has conquered major festivals in Singapore and internationally, from France
to South Korea. This has brought them to their next stage of development in dance vocabulary,
aesthetic and artistic voice.
The annual M1 CONTACT Contemporary Dance Festival, happening from 27 November to 31
December 2014 is just one of the many ways they push themselves to the next level.
Taking place at the Esplanade, the National Museum of Singapore and Goodman Arts Centre, M1
CONTACT features an impressive lineup of performances and workshops. From collaborations with
international choreographers and festivals such as the Seoul and Yokohama Dance Collections, each
programme allows Singapore-based dancers a rare chance to not just learn from, but also work with

Drawing on sequences from his award-winning repertoire, Israelborn, Madrid-based Sharon Fridman leads participants in an
exploration of contact technique as a method of choreographic
composition. Concepts such as organic creativity, collaboration
and support underline Fridman’s creations and the principles of

CLASSES
Explore the infinite possibilities of dance with 45 contemporary
dance technique classes at M1 CONTACT 2014. This year, 18
guest instructors from Batsheva Dance Company, HKAPA, NDT
II and more teach a range of movement styles and philosophies
for beginner and advanced students, suitable for participants
13 years and above. Other highlights include the New Creation
Sharing Sessions, where participants get a peek at the original
creations premiering at M1 CONTACT 2014, and classes by Kuik
Swee Boon and Kim Jae Duk, Marcus Foo, Jin Byoung Cheol, Lee
Ren Xin and Miwa Okuno (Asian Festivals Exchange), as they teach
movement phrases from their new works before their premieres!

Gathering the brightest young talents from institutions and
conservatories in Singapore and the region, Continuum Dance
Exchange presents a day of spirited dance exchange, featuring
dancers from Singapore’s LASALLE College of the Arts, Nanyang
Academy of Fine Arts and School of the Arts, and overseas guests,
the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (HKAPA) and the
Queensland University of Technology (QUT), both renowned for
producing illustrious alumni active in the Asian and European dance

Teachers and trainers are often tasked to create short but
complete performances with their students for different school
events. How does one create these with imagination and craft,
with limited resources, and still allow all involved to have fun, learn
and grow? These two workshops led by experienced facilitators
offer two possible methodologies.
Workshop: Devising Strategies by Patricia Toh (10am - 1pm)
Designed for educators keen on devising through the use of images,
the body and the environment. Participants will learn strategies
to generate material and create staging compositions, as well as
understand the nature and possible challenges of devising.
Workshop: 15 minutes of Drama by Marianne Sim (10 am - 1pm)
This workshop invites participants to have hands-on experience
in exploring written text. Through exploration of characters, their
dynamics and bringing them to life, through the use of drama
strategies and theatre conventions, participants will use dramatic text
to make performance meaningful and relevant to young audiences.
Forum: Competitions in Arts Education: Good or Bad?

organisations as they take on the topic of arts competitions in

that moment, or that moment you saw the most beautiful stars
on a cloudless night by sewing your own Starlight Cushion this
Christmas! Simple and beautiful to sew, it also makes the perfect
handmade gift for your loved ones this Christmas. So who says you
can’t have your stars and keep them? In this workshop, you will
be operating a sewing machine, overlocking using zig-zag stitch,
sewing according to seam allowance, making buttonholes and
fabric buttons, as well attaching appliques.
