Welcome Dear Colleagues, Students, and Friends, On behalf of the 2014 Program Planning Committee, I am thrilled to extend an invitation for you to join us in Providence for the 42nd Annual Fall Meeting of the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine! Our meeting will feature expert national and international faculty to address the conference theme of Exploring New Frontiers in Sports Medicine. With speakers from South Africa, Canada and across the United States, the program will include an array of presentations ranging from common to unique to controversial. Headlining our program this year are our two Keynote lectures. On Thursday, Dr. Ross Tucker, a scientist from the University of Cape Town and sports consultant with teams and federations including the USA Olympic Committee, Great Britain Olympic Sports Federations, International Rugby Board, South Africa Sevens Rugby, and South Africa Kayaking, will deliver the Clarkson Lecture. Dr. Tucker will speak on the subject of bridging the gap between science and practice. Coming from McMaster University in Ontario to deliver the Knuttgen Lecture on Friday is Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky, a leading researcher on nutritional, exercise and pharmacological therapies for neurometabolic and neuromuscular disorders. In addition, Dr. Tarnopolsky studies the physiological and molecular aspects of mitochondrial adaptation to exercise, aging and the metabolic syndrome. New this year is the Student Special Interest Group Session sponsored by the Camaione Fund. The session titled “What’s Next? Graduate and Career Options” will be focused on the next step after earning a degree in the exercise sciences. And we will continue our tradition hosting the NEACSM President’s Reception, followed by Student Scholarships, Research Awards, and the 11th Annual College Bowl. With such diverse program content, we hope to exceed your expectations and provide you with the opportunity to learn something new. I am profoundly grateful for the privilege of serving the NEACSM for a second round as President-Elect and Program Chair and I would like to express my gratitude to our engaged Board of Trustees and Executive Committee who make the chapter so successful! Thanks are in order for NEACSM President Sean Walsh for his genuine enthusiasm toward the chapter. And finally, a special thank you to our Executive Director, Dino Costanzo, for keeping the Chapter running smoothly over the many years of his active service! So make plans to join us in Providence to share knowledge, partake in experiences, rekindle old friendships, make new ones, and continue to grow in sports medicine! Lara A.
