UPC charge €32.50 per month for their basic TV package,

Where UPC and SKY will charge you a hefty
fee per month for multi-room viewing
with Free To Air you pay a small one
off fee to view the channels on a
second TV.
SKY charge €28.00 per month for their basic TV package,
that’s still a hefty €336.00 per year.
Between them they have captured most of the market.

Rabbits - Basic Care

An increasing number of people these days are keeping
rabbits as pets, and they really can make great pets. They
are cute and usually quite friendly, especially if handled
well from a young age. They can live for about to 8 to 10
years. Rabbits usually live outside in a hutch, but they also
like being indoors. If you do bring your rabbit inside, be
sure to rabbit proof the house before you let one loose as
they love chewing through cables.
Older Rabbits
Like dogs and cats, rabbits can suffer from arthritis. Feet problems are
common too – especially sore hocks. Ensuring a soft surface underfoot
and clean dry bedding helps to prevent this problem.
Handling your Rabbit
Rabbits have a very light skeleton and powerful back legs. They can
easily injure their spine if they jump from your arms so it is important to
handle them correctly. Never pick them up by the ears! Pick them up
gently, cradling them in your arms and supporting the back. If your rabbit
is nervous, keep a grip on the scruff of the neck – this will not hurt him,
however he may find it stressful so do not hold on to him for longer than
necessary. Rabbits that are well handled when they are young will make
the best pets. They are a burrowing animal so they tend to have quite
long nails. Be very careful clipping them as it is easy to clip the “quick”
and make their toes bleed.
Here is some veterinary advice on important issues for
rabbit owners in Ireland.
IMPORTANT HEALTHCARE INFORMATION:
Diet
One of the most common reasons vets see rabbits is due to dental
problems. Rabbit’s teeth grow continuously throughout their life,
therefore they need to spend lots of time grazing to keep their teeth
worn down. Wild rabbits eat hay and grass, and our pet rabbits should
also.
Rabbits with normal teeth do not need
their teeth clipped. However if your rabbit
develops dental problems he may need his
teeth clipped regularly.
We recommend feeding ad lib hay and water. If you are feeding dry mix
use a homogenous pellet mix. An occasional piece of carrot once a week
will do as a treat! Too much carrot and lettuce can be too rich, and often
they do not spend enough time eating. If fed mixed pellets, they engage
in selective feeding, eating the tastiest bits and leaving the rest behind.
This leads commonly to weight and dental problems.
Dental problems in rabbits often result in eye problems or abscesses, and
can be very difficult to clear up. To give him something to gnaw on, have
a block of wood or an apple tree branch in your rabbit hutch
Fresh water is essential, either a bowl or bottle. Check the water bottles
every day to make sure the nipple is not blocked.

Outdoor rabbits can graze the grass, and you can get hutches that sit
directly on the grass. This allows your rabbit to graze without becoming
prey for a dog or cat, although in any case many rabbits are well able to
defend themselves!

Rabbits can be affected by myxomatosis, a deadly virus that is spread by
fleas and other insects. Treatments are available to prevent flea
infestation. Signs of myxomotasis include swelling on the skin particularly
the eyes, mouth and genitalia. It is frequently fatal. Annual vaccinations
are necessary to help prevent this disease in our rabbits. An outbreak
occurred in Celbridge in autumn 2009, and seven out of nine affected
rabbits seen at our centre died. The two survivors had been vaccinated,
showing the value of regular vaccination.

We also recommend vaccination against Viral Haemorrhagic Disease of
Rabbits, this virus typically results in sudden death in rabbits. It is very
common in Ireland.

Neutering – Male and Female Rabbits
Male rabbits should be neutered, as they are easier to handle and they
tend to be less aggressive. A huge percentage of female rabbits aged over
four will get uterine adenocarcinoma (cancer of the womb). Therefore it
is a good idea to get them spayed while they are young.
