Panthers, “They are a good team,” Lennemann said of Oakley. “They are always really good and they had some of their better players back, but we still practiced to go against their best players and go around the outside and I think it worked pretty good.” Phillipsburg clearly was prepared, forcing Oakley to punt on its first possession before finishing its first offensive drive with a 7-yard touchdown run by Lennemann, the first of five scores he would have in the game. The Panthers led 14-0 after a quarter following Lennemann’s second TD, a 27-yard run. Big plays weren’t exclusive to Lennemann, however, as senior Sam Sage broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, of which Lennemann followed with a 36-yard scoring run on the next possession to make it 28-0 Phillipsburg with 8:03 to play until half. “The Kuhn kid, the big, physical kid causes a lot of problems right at the point of attack where we like to attack a lot of the times,” Covington said. “I thought we did a really nice job on him. They are an awfully good football team. They can lineup a lot of big guys, big bodies up across the front.” After getting steamrolled the first quarter and a half, Oakley found life late in the first half. Following Lennemann’s third score, Oakley came back with an eight-play drive, all runs, and finished it with a 1-yard TD plunge by junior Colter Stoll. After the defense held Phillipsburg and was given great field position on a botched punt attempt, Oakley’s next drive also ended in a score. The Plainsmen went 30 yards in about 25 seconds, sophomore quarterback Kendrick Smith finding junior Macoy Rains for an 8-yard TD pass with 4.9 seconds to play in the period. With their lead cut to 28-12 at halftime, Phillipsburg knew it needed to respond coming out of the locker room. “I thought coming out we felt like we needed to put a drive together,” Covington said. “They made a nice run at us at the end of the first half. We felt like we had to put a drive together and stick one in the end zone. Obviously the kickoff was big and then the second quick score was huge for us.” The Panthers’ answer was two scores in the first 1:15 of the third quarter to put the game away. The first came on the opening kickoff, when Lennemann let the ball get from C1 AUSTIN COLBERT • Hays Daily News Phillipsburg senior Stuart Lennemann (1) carries the ball against Oakley on Friday in the Class 2-1A sectional game in Oakley. Oakley sophomore Kendrick Smith, left, looks to pass while being rushed by Phillipsburg’s Ian Chestnut (2) and Drew Stapel (65). behind him and looked like he would be taken down around his own 10-yard line, but used his track speed to break free around the right side for the touchdown. Oakley’s first second-half drive was all of one play, an interception by Phillipsburg’s Zachery Davis on Smith, and it took two plays for the Panthers to score, this time on a 60-yard touchdown run by junior Nate Prewitt. For good measure, Lennemann scored once more, a 45-yard run early in the third quarter to reach the 48-12 final. “I think we were getting things blocked up pretty well up front. I thought Oakley had a really nice game plan, defensively, coming in against us,” Covington said. “But Stuart is one of those guys that’s really developed. Early on we knew he was fast all along, obviously, but he’s a guy that’s not afraid to stick his nose up in the hole there and run through some tackles now, too.” Lennemann finished with 122 yards on just 12 carries, while Sage added 103 on eight carries and Prewitt 101 on nine carries. Stoll led all players with 164 yards on 33 carries for Oakley. “It was a tremendous team effort,” Covington said. “I thought we played well in all three phases of the game. Our guys up front got it done.” Gordon wins pole; Harvick top Chase finalist HOMESTEAD, Fla. (TNS) — It was a bittersweet achievement for Jeff Gordon as he won his first pole at Homestead-Miami Speedway for today’s season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400. The favorable spot on the starting grid won’t give the veteran a shot at the Sprint Cup title after he failed to qualify for the Championship 4 by one point when Ryan Newman bulled his way past Kyle Larson last week at Phoenix. 2-1A, from C3 But the Cardinals who never trailed in this one. In the first quarter, Areco connected with Jacobson on a 49 yard rainbow that put his team at the Leopards’ 2. Walters slipped over from the 1 a couple of plays later and Arceo hit Jacobson for the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0. La Crosse answered with Schmidt’s 41-yard burst early in the second quarter to cut it to 8-6, but Ell-Saline was on the move after that. Areco called his number three times for 24 yards, Walters slipped outside for 17 and Jacobson hauled in a 20-yard toss to put the ball at the La Crosse 9, first and goal. After Bradley dropped a pass in the end zone, Areco bought time on the scramble before Bradley came open in the back of the end zone and caught the 9-yard scoring pass. “I saw Louie scramble so I just tried to find an open “If we win this race on Sunday, that’s only going to make it hurt a little bit more in some ways because we could have won the championship if we were [still in contention] here,” Gordon said, adding that he’s not yet over the disappointment. “This is certainly a great achievement for us to start the weekend and something that is positive that we can smile about and be proud of.” Gordon turned in a lap of 180.747 mph Friday to claim his 77th pole for a Sprint Cup race and the 200th for his team, Hendrick Motorsports. Kevin Harvick, in fifth, was the leader among the four drivers who will vie for the title on Sunday. Denny Hamlin was eighth and Joey Logano ninth. Newman will have some ground to make up because he qualified 21st. “Today was really just about trying to get a solid starting spot, and we were able to do that,” Harvick said. area,” Bradley said. “They kinda got caught up on Louie so I snuck in behind (the secondary), and it worked out.” “I had pressure so I had to run and kept looking upfield,” Arceo said. “I saw him back there, waving at me so I threw it to him.” La Crosse had moved to midfield early in the final period, still trailing by two scores, when quarterback Jack Garcia went deep to Andrew Jay but Bradley was on the spot again stepping in front of the intended receiver at his own 14. Once he had the pick, Bradley wound his way 32 yards upfield to put the Cardinals in business again. “They had been lining up in trips, and they weren’t going to beat me over the top,” Bradley said. “It gave us some momentum.” A 26-yard scamper by Walters got the ball to the 17 and a play later, Arceo kept on the zone read with Walters, and broke 16 yards for the touchdown with 5:03 remaining in regulation. La Crosse quickly answered thanks to a 34-yard pass and Schmidt’s 27-yard burst, but it was Arceo to ice the victory cake with another keeper on the zone read, this time for 41 yards and a 28-12 lead with 4:01 to go. “In middle school we did (the zone read) a lot, we kind of just brought that back this week,” he said. “I’ve been telling Louie for a month now, that some of these plays are designed for his athleticism,” King said, “You need to make some plays. Well he made some tonight.” “They had kids step up and make plays tonight, that’s the bottom line,” La Crosse coach Jon Webster said. “Ell-Saline doesn’t do anything to beat themselves. What they do, they’re really good at it.”
