Recycling Rules
Recycling is collected on the same day as your
rubbish but only twice a month:
First and third Mondays or Wednesdays,
Second and fourth Tuesdays or Thursdays of
each month as it applies to your rubbish collection day.
If your recycling day falls on a holiday, recycling will be on the following business day
along with your regular rubbish pick up, or
other designated day by advance notice if
necessary. Glass bottles/jars, cans, and plastics (bottles only) can be combined into one
common blue bag. Use large blue bags in 13
gallon or 30 gallon sizes available at the local
grocery stores. Continue to use small blue
check-out bags or brown grocery bags for
newspapers and magazines.
Please place blue bags, corrugated cardboard
and newspaper at least six feet away from rubbish on scheduled recycling collection days.
PLASTIC–Acceptable plastic includes
plastic bottles only in 12-ounce size and
larger. No cups, trays, webbing, flower
pots, styrofoam or empty bags.
GLASS–Acceptable glass includes bottles
and jars only, no caps please.
CANS–Acceptable cans include food and
beverage cans only.
These items can be mixed together in blue
recycling bags.
Newspaper–Tie into bundles or place in
brown grocery or blue bags. Please check for
tissue, food boxes or other contaminants and
discard them.
Corrugated Cardboard – Break down boxes
by cutting taped seams allowing the boxes to
collapse. Stack flattened boxes and tie securely. The only exception is large appliance boxes
which may be laid flat without tying, however
they must be broken down and flattened.
Food boxes are not cardboard.
Automotive–Oil, solvents, antifreeze and batteries must be in plain view. Label and securely seal liquids in plastic bottles with threaded
lids. Plastic bottles having “pop-off ” or “snap”
type lids are unacceptable. Keep liquids sepa-

rate. Automotive fluids and paint products must be
put out only for recycling or brought to the Service
Department on Saturdays from 8 am to noon. They
will not be taken in your rubbish.
Household Chemicals–All household chemicals/
hazardous waste must be clearly marked before being
accepted at the Service Department. Hazardous
chemicals such as acids, gas, kerosene, diazanene…
etc. must be marked so City employees know what
chemicals they are handling and how to safely dispose of them. Unmarked items will no longer be
accepted. The EPA is very specific on what items
can be recycled. The City will not accept hazardous
waste from businesses. The solid waste district will
not accept any materials from businesses. Businesses
are responsible for their own disposal of hazardous
waste.
Magazines–Tie into bundles or bag with newspaper.
Junk mail can be included with newspapers and
magazines.
Propane Tanks–(Full or empty) - Leave with recycling separate from rubbish. Tanks will not be taken
with rubbish, they also can be brought to the Service
Department on Saturdays from 9 am to noon.
Old Computer/Cell Phone Drop Off – Residents
can drop off old computers and related equipment and cell phones at the Brecksville Service
Department on Saturdays only from
9 am to 12 noon. Brecksville residents only.
Disposal of Items Containing Mercury – We
encourage proper mercury disposal and reducing
the amount of mercury going into the environment.
Thermometers and thermostats containing mercury
may be disposed of by placing them in tightly sealed
plastic bags and bringing them to the Recycling
Center on Saturdays only from 8 am to noon. Please
hand-deliver these items to an attendant.
Fluorescent Bulbs–The Service Department cannot
accept any fluorescent bulbs containing mercury in
recycling collections. Cuyahoga County will accept
these bulbs on two designated days at the County
Fairgrounds or you can take them to any Home
Depot store. For more information, please contact
the Recycling Department at 526-2643.
Please call the receptionist at City Hall if you would
like a copy of the City’s recycling video.
TREES - Large trees taken down do not constitute
yard waste whereas ongoing maintenance of lawns,
shrubs, bushes and tree prunings is yard waste.
Large trees having a trunk diameter exceeding 6"
will not be taken.
need to bundle or use twine. The chipping
will go more quickly if the brush is spread
out along the treelawn rather than piled high.
NO ROOTS OR SOIL – these will damage
the chipper blades.
When engaging the services of a tree removal service or landscaper, the company should dispose
of the trees or the homeowner is responsible.
Trees or limbs 3" in diameter or less must be cut
in lengths of 6’ maximum and bundled without
roots. Tie bundles securely at each end with twine
only. Limbs or tree parts 4" to 6" diameter may be
placed out singularly and not bundled, but stacked
neatly.
Chips will be used to mulch landscape projects on city property.
YARD WASTE - Yard waste is grass cuttings, bushes, shrubs and tree branch prunings, left over leaves
or weeds from the previous fall, or an occasional
small tree that is cut up and tied in 6' bundles not
to exceed 50 pounds each. Grass cuttings, leaves,
weeds and twigs must be placed in biodegradable
yardwaste, 30-gal paper bags only. No other material or container will be accepted. Grass/leaf bags
will be collected for recycling on your regular rubbish day from March 10 through October 23.
HOME REMODELING DEBRIS –
Disposal of construction debris consisting of
lumber, drywall, cabinets, doors, windows,
shingles, and masonry is the responsibility of the contractor performing the work.
When a homeowner is also the contractor, it
is the homeowner’s responsibility to remove
and discard such material at his or her own
expense. Under NO circumstances will the
City take construction debris from major
remodeling. Very small amounts of 100 lbs.
or less resulting from small repairs can be
taken if they are in cans or bundles.
See our website www.brecksville.oh.us/departments/service.
GRASS CLIPPINGS – DON’T BAG THEM!
Grass clippings make a great mulch for your garden or lawn. Not bagging your grass clippings will
benefit your lawn and is an excellent way to reduce
the waste stream. Leaving clippings on the lawn
works best when the grass is cut into small pieces.
Grass should be cut when it is 2-3" long and no
more than 1/3 of the blade should be cut.
Grass clippings do not cause thatch which is dead
and dying plant parts that accumulate above the
soil surface of the lawn. Leaving grass clippings on
the lawn helps reduce thatch problems. Before you
stop bagging clippings, remove thatch from your
lawn so clippings can filter down to the soil.
Leaving clippings on the lawn makes mowing
easier and returns nutrients to the soil. The lawn
will need less water and fertilizer.
BRUSH – Brush from residential tree and shrub
trimming will be run through a chipper from
April 7 through April 11. Please place the brush
with the butt end toward the curb. There is no
City of Brecksville

Rubbish Rules
Calendar Key
All refuse should be at the curb by 7:30 am, but not prior to 6:00 pm
the day before collection. The hour of collection may vary. PLEASE HAVE
MATERIAL OUT EARLY.
The Recycle symbol indicates curbside recycling
collection which occurs the same day as your rubbish
collection, but only twice each month.
Containment–All refuse capable of being contained in cans or bags must be so
contained. Refuse will not be taken when in boxes, paper bags, or loose. Blue
bags are for recycling only.
The Yard Waste symbol indicates special collection of yard
waste which begins Monday, March 10 and will end on
Thursday, October 23.
Acceptable Rubbish Containers–35-gallon capacity or less, with rigid lift
type handles. Cans must be in good condition and not exceed 50-lbs. weight
when filled. Large refuse carts over 35-gal. MAY NOT be emptied. Carts
over 45-gallon WILL NOT be emptied.
Acceptable Bags–Plastic, 30-gallon capacity or less. (No blue bags)
Cardboard Boxes–Must be collapsed by loosening staples and taped seams.
The Fall Leaf Collection symbol indicates fall leaf
vacuuming. This begins on Monday, October 20 and will
end on Friday, November 28. When snowplows are operating, leaf vacuum service is suspended. Watch for signs in
your neighborhood indicating an impending leaf sweep.
Leaves must be close to the street, but not on the street.
Daily scheduling is not possible.
Tie flattened sections into bundles. Save corrugated cardboard for recycling.
Do not use boxes for refuse.
Old Rubbish Containers–To dispose of an unacceptable or worn out refuse
container, attach a signed note instructing the collection crew to discard the container.
The city is not responsible for damage incurred to any refuse container due to
weather, traffic, non lifting handles or a container which exceeds 35 gallon
capacity or missing lids or wheels. Swivel type handles are not for lifting.
Live cut Christmas trees are collected for mulching
December 26-January 15. Remove all trimmings and
do not bag.
All Major Appliances and Large Metal Items
Please call ahead, 526-1384 or 526-2643 to arrange for special collection of large
metal items. These collections take place each Friday except holidays. Eligible
items include refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, ranges,
washers, dryers, water tanks, metal bath tubs, riding mowers, garage door openers, and certain other large amounts of metal or large metal items. Call if you
have a questionable item prior to placing it at the curb.
Saturday Resident Recycling Drop Off
For Brecksville Residents Only
For added convenience, recycling materials may be brought to the service yard
8 am to noon, except holidays.
RECYCLING ONLY – NO RUBBISH OR YARDWASTE
NO FLUORESCENT BULBS!
Shred Your Documents Day! – The City will offer a safe and secure shredding
service for residents on Saturday, May 10 and September 13. These dates will
be announced on our cable channel and flyers will be distributed throughout
City buildings.
Brush Pickup
Residential tree and shrub trimmings will be run through a
chipper from April 7 through April 11. Please see the brush
guidelines on the previous page.
Observed Holidays – When City offices are closed, collection services are suspended
until the next business day. If your recycling day falls on a holiday, recycling will be on
the following business day along with your regular rubbish pick up, or other designated
day by advance notice if necessary.
Restricted Materials – Tires, railroad and landscape ties, logs over 6" diameter, and
concrete will not be collected. Call the Service Department at 526-2643 or 526-1384 for
information on how to dispose of this material. Fluorescent tubes will not be accepted
nor recycled. See above in recycling rules.
Because of safety concerns, service personnel do not remove contents of oversized
containers, individual items, or numerous bags. Use acceptable containers. For
further information go to www.brecksville.oh.us and click on departments/service.
