Doudna Snapshot
November 2014
A Note from the Principal
END OF QTR 1 IS ALREADY HERE!
The flurries flying and Halloween costumes signal the end of the first
quarter at Doudna. As always, it has gone fast! We will be holding
parent / teacher conferences on November 11th and 13th. This
gives parents and teachers a chance to talk about each student’s
progress and achievement. We hope this isn’t the only communication happening between parent and teacher. Don’t hesitate to call or
email teachers if you have questions or concerns.
The end of quarter 1 also means we will be handing out report cards
for each student. This will be our 2nd year of using ‘standards
based’ report cards. We have received positive feedback so far on
the report cards. If you have any questions or comments on the report card, please call your teacher or the principal.
October Fun Run
We had also 50% of our students participate in October’s
fun run sponsored by the
PTO. It’s great to see good
participation in an event promoting fitness for our students. Even better, it is great to see all the
students support each other to do their best. Great Job Students!!!
Doudna is on Facebook
We’ve gotten almost 200 followers of our Facebook page so far.
We’ll continue to do our best to keep updated information flowing
into our site.

Kindergarten
A highlight in kindergarten was learning about fire safety with the Richland Center Fire Dept. The firemen
stressed to the children that they should know at least two ways to get out of their house and to have a
meeting place when outside. They also said that it is more important than ever for your child to know
their home address as when calling from a cell phone, the 911 dispatch does not have address information readily available, as they would if calling from a home phone line. The children were asked to look
for smoke detectors at home and to remind their parents to check the batteries. We were able to practice
STOP, DROP, and ROLL as well as crawling under a pretend screen of smoke. We also got a close up look
at a fire truck. Thank you, Richland Center Fire Department for taking time to teach us these important
safety skills!

Fabulous First Grade Readers
We have been reading lots of good fit
books this month! We are working to fill our reading
charts to earn special prizes. In the classroom we read
to self, listen to reading and participate in guided reading in small groups. We even got to enjoy reading outside during the school wide read-in.
Homecoming week was a blast! We celebrated by
dressing up in mix match clothes, crazy hair,
hats, favorite sports team apparel, and on Friday
we wore our orange and black. We also helped
represent our school in the homecoming parade.
In honor of fire prevention week we had the opportunity to tour the smokehouse. We learned first-hand
how to get out of a building filled with smoke. We also
learned the importance of knowing your address in
the case of emergency.

2nd Grade
2nd Grade’s Top Ten List
Here are the Top Ten reasons why it is cool to be in 2nd Grade:
#10 – We read stories about nature – including “Henry and Mudge”, “Exploring Parks with Ranger
Dockett”, and “Around the Pond: Who’s Been There?”
#9 – We can you tell you all about different kinds of sentences such as: telling sentences, ques
tions, commands, and exclamations.
#8 – We love to read! Many of us had the chance to watch the movie “Despicable Me” for reaching
our reading goal in October!
#7 – We are learning two digit addition in Math. We can show you how to add 45 + 39!
#6 – We can solve all kinds of story problems – even problems that have hidden information, not
enough information, and extra information!
#5 – We will be learning how to write in cursive soon!
#4 – Did I mention we love to read? We even read outside one day in October with all the staff
and students of Doudna!
#3 – We love our lunches! Thank you to the Doudna food servers and also our parents for our cold
lunches and snacks!!!!
#2 – We have been learning about the world around us by studying Daily Geography questions –
ask us what continent we live on?
And the #1 reason it is cool to be in 2nd grade is – WE ARE THANKFUL FOR OUR CLASSROOMS!
We love our friends and teachers. Stop in to see us sometime!
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

3rd Grade
It’s hard to believe the first quarter of this year is already over! We
have been lucky to participate in some fun and memorable activities
so far. On October 7, Emma and Mr. Hady brought some chickens
from their farm so we could see real live examples of each stage of
their life cycle, from egg to adult. We learned about how chickens
change as they grow, and even got to pet baby chicks! Thanks so
much to Emma and Mr. Hady for a great presentation- we learned a lot!
We also got to make salt dough maps of a state. This project helped
us learn about the land features of each region of the country, as well as
how to use a map key to find features such as rivers, lakes, capitols, and
other cities. Thanks to all families who were able to donate salt dough and
cardboard- we could not have done this project without you!
Hopefully your child has been reading every night at home. It cannot
be overstated- the best way to become a better reader is to READ, every single day! We ask
that students read at least 20 minutes a night, 5 nights a week. Those who met their goal for
October got to participate in a Despicable Me party with Mr. Olson, complete with “minions” and
a special guest appearance by Gru himself! Please keep encouraging your child to read books
that are interesting to them every single night.
In math, we have been finishing up our units on place value and telling time. Reading a
clock can be a difficult skill to learn! We will come back to telling time in the spring when we
learn about elapsed time, but until then please keep helping your child practice reading an analog clock. It is truly a life skill they will use every day.
We have just begun our next big unit in math- multiplication. Please help your child
study their multiplication facts every single night. Just like with addition and subtraction facts,
it is important that students eventually know these facts from memory, so they don’t have to
use all of their mental energy calculating the answer every time. If you would like flashcards or
other resources to help your child practice, please let his or her teacher know. As always,
thanks for your support at home!

Fourth Grade Information
We have a field trip planned for Nov. 20. We will be visiting The Capital and the State Historical Museum. This trip
coordinates beautifully with our Social Studies curriculum and brings to life many of the things that we are learning
about in class.
Parent/Teacher conferences are right around the corner. Meeting to discuss how your child is doing and creating a
plan to help your child improve is a team effort. We hope that all of you can make it! We look forward to it. J
Our areas of study for the next few weeks are states of matter, various types of nouns and their spelling patterns,
sequencing, inferencing, and multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers. Making a home-school connection with your
child is helpful, so try and work these topics into your conversations at home.
Thanks for sharing your children with us this year!!
The Fourth Grade Team,
Mrs. Gunderson
Mrs. Schultz
Mrs. Storms
5th Grade
The first quarter is at an end and we have had to say good-bye to Mrs. Pulvermacher. Her nine
-week student teaching assignment is over at Doudna Elementary and she will now be student
teaching at River Valley. We wish her the best and hope she comes back to visit when she can.
A social studies / language arts assignment that Mrs. Pulvermacher
created “What’s In a Name?” was a big success. Students had to write
their opinion as to whether or not the NFL Washington Redskin should
be forced to change their name. You will be able to read their responses the night of Parent-Teacher conferences November 11 & 13 in
the fifth grade hall.
Second quarter which begins November 3 will involve new areas of study. Students will be required to increase their reading from five new books to ten new books. They will continue to
increase their vocabulary with new Greek and Latin roots. In Social Studies, students will be
learning about the colonial period in American history, along with learning our country’s 50
states and capitals. Students will be introduced to fractions while still honing their skills in
multiplication and division. And finally...our students will continue to discover new facts about
our solar system and the universe.

Physical Education—Mrs. Tiller
This past month the kindergarten classes have
been working on their balancing skills. They have
balanced on beams, stilts and balance boards.
The 1st and 2nd graders have been practicing their
kicking skills and have played soccer lead up
games. They also participated in the ½ mile run
and other fitness related activities.
The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have been working on
their eye hand coordination by playing ball and
paddle games. One of their favorites is paddle
ball. There are 3 or 4 players on a team; they
take turns hitting a ball against the wall, seeing
who can go the longest without a miss. They also
have participated in the ½ mile or mile run for
their fitness test.
Mrs. Johnson’s class is showing some of
their paddle ball skills!
Physical Education—Mr. Mindham
Fourth and 5th graders recently ran the one mile run. Best time for the 4th grade boys was Conner Lornson with a time of 7 min. and 36 seconds. Paige Keller was tops for the 4th grade girls
with a time of 8:53.
For the 5th grade girls, Alyssa Gander had the best time at 7:44. Sam Williams was first for the
boys at 6:29! Sam was only 9 seconds off the Doudna record of 6:20 set in 1999 by Paul Annear.
We also ran the 50 yard sprint and following are the champions from each of my grade levels.
Grade 1 – Abaigeal Williams – 8.7 seconds
Grade 2 – Trever Rizner – 8.0 seconds
Grade 3 – Zach Hillers – 8.2 seconds
Grade 4 – Clara Schmidt – 7.7 seconds
Grade 5 – Zeke Chitwood – 7.7 seconds
Last week ,classes went on a hike along with Mrs. Tiller’s classes. We’ve also have had several
games involving the use of the giant cageball and several cooperative actitivies.

The first quarter flew by very quickly. Second quarter, we will be welcoming a
student teacher in the music room. Her name is Elisabeth Cejpek. She has a degree in vocal music performance from Viterbo University and is earning a degree
in music education from UW-Platteville. We look forward to working with and
learning from her.
The first big program that the Fifth Grade Super Singers are preparing for
will be the Veterans Day Program on November 11, 2014. They are learning
sign language to perform while they sing on one of their songs.
The second big program that the First, Second, and Third Grades are preparing for will be the holiday program on Thursday, December 4, 2013, at the

ART—Ms. Steiner
Kindergarten
We have been very busy in kinder art making different kinds of lines. We are also starting to get
familiar with the color wheel.
First Grade
In first grade we are creating our own Starry Nights. We are using our fingers to smudge chalk
around for our night skies. Next, we will use warm colored paint to add our stars.
Second Grade
We are learning all about medieval architecture in second grade. We took some time to read about
castles and how they were used more than 1,000 years ago. We are now in the process of drawing
and painting our own castles. Next, we will create the landscape and even creatures that will surround our castles.
Third Grade
We are just finishing up our sweet treats inspired by Wayne Theibaud. These will be up on Artsonia
very soon! Next, we will be starting on self portraits.
Fourth Grade
We are learning about the Wisconsin born artist, Georgia O’Keefe. We are using very large paper
to create O’Keefe inspired flowers. We are using black glue to create a subtle 3D effect on the outline of our flowers. Next, we will be adding color and creating value (lights & darks) to make our
flowers look real!
Fifth Grade
We just finished up our Mandalas and are now planning out our second project. We are in the process of drawing symbols to help represent who we are. We will then rub our symbols onto copper
sheets to create reliefs … read next month’s newsletter for more details and a sneak peak at this
exciting project!
I hope all families received the information about Doudna’s online art gallery, Artsonia. Each student received information to take home informing parents on how to access their child’s gallery. If
you did not receive this information please don’t hesitate to contact me. ([email protected])
Artsonia is a great way to see what your child has been working on in art class! I hope everyone
takes advantage of it. Also, the art room has signed up to host two popcorn Fridays. I am looking
for parent volunteers who could come pop some popcorn on the mornings of Dec. 19 th and Jan.
30th. All money raised will go to purchase new colorful glazes for our ceramic artwork this year!
Please contact me if you are interested in helping out.

Title 1
Using Magnetic Letters at Home
LETTER PLAY: Encourage children to play with the magnetic letters on the refrigerator or on a table.
Playing with letters allows children to learn more about how they look.
MAKING NAMES: A child’s name is the most important word. Have children make their names several
times, mixing up the letters, making their names, and checking them with their names written on a
card.
LETTER MATCH: Invite children to find other letters that look exactly the same as the letters in their
name (for example, place an M on the refrigerator and have the child find all the letters that look like
it). They do not need to know the letter name.
NAME GAME: Have children make names of friends or family members. Have them make the name,
mix the letters, and make the name again.
MAKING WORDS: Print a simple word like MOM or DAD and have your child make the same word by
matching each letter and placing it below the printed letter.
ALPHABET TRAIN: Have your child put the lower case letters in the order of the alphabet. They can
point to them and sing the alphabet song.
CONSONANT/VOWEL SORT: Have children sort the consonant letters and vowel letters.
WRITING LETTERS: Have children select ten different letters and write them on a paper. They can
use the magnetic letters as a sample.
WRITING WORDS: Have children make five simple words (such as dog, cat, big, like, sit) and then
write them on paper.
MAKING FOOD WORDS: Make some words that identify foods – for example, bun, corn, rice. Have
children draw pictures of each, mix the letters, and make the words again.
