Workshop Deliverables:
• The committee will prepare a full report containing the highlights of the
Workshop discussions. This report will be circulated to all attendees.
• PowerPoint presentation materials will be posted on specific SPE URL address
after the Workshop. Provision of the materials by the discussion leaders will
signify their permission for SPE to do so.
Commercialism:
In keeping with the Workshop objectives and the SPE mission, excessive
commercialism in posters or presentations will not be permitted. Company
logos must be limited to the title slide and used only to indicate the aﬃliation of
the presenter and others involved in the work.
Attendance Certificate:
All attendees will receive an attendance certificate attesting to their participation
at the Workshop. This certificate will be provided in exchange for a completed
Workshop Attendee Survey Form.
Continuing Education Units:
This Workshop qualifies for SPE Continuing Education Units (CEU) at the rate of
0.1 CEU per hour of the Workshop.

Workshop Description
Flow assurance is now a mature and well recognised discipline that contributes value to field development and towards achieving
operational excellence. Flow assurance is recognised as a key driver in determining field architecture and can influence cost and schedule.
Achieving excellence in flow assurance requires the involvement of many disciplines and parties, having good quality data, understanding
fluid behaviour and the ability to predict various behaviours with confidence.
Having competent and skilled personnel is also essential to eﬀectively solve and manage flow assurance issues throughout the entire
life of a field. Organisational and human factors can also aﬀect the resolution and management of flow assurance issues.
Workshop Objectives
The workshop aims to discuss the diverse contribution of flow assurance in the entire life cycle of an oil and gas field from early field

To eﬀectively manage and understand flow assurance risk, modelling of production systems is currently the
only reliable method used for predicting and estimating phase behaviour, rheology, heat transfer, multiphase
flow, and solids formation. Identifying flow assurance risk during the early stages can help avoid system

All participants are encouraged to prepare a poster for the Workshop. Posters will be presented at an assigned time and open to frank
discussion and presentation of unconfirmed or partial results. Posters will be available on display for the entire Workshop period.
Presentations on both research and field experience are solicited.
When preparing your poster:
• Avoid commercialism. No mention of trademarks/product name.
• Poster size should be approximately 0.8m x 1.2m (W x H) or size A0 in portrait layout.
• Identify topic by title, presenter, aﬃliation, address, and phone number.
• Include a brief abstract that summarises the technology to be addressed.
• Make the display as self-explanatory as possible.
• Place the information sequentially; beginning with the main idea or problem, method used, result, etc. (Draw a plan keeping the
size and number of illustrations in mind).
• Keep illustrations simple by using charts, graphs, drawings, and pictures to create interest and visually explain a point.
• Use contrasting colours.
• Use large print for narrative materials. (We suggest a minimum of 24 points or 3" high letters for the title).
Note that the Workshop Programme Committee will review all poster abstracts/materials prior to display, and reserves the right to
refuse permission to display any poster considered by the committee to be commercial in nature.

In conjunction with SPE Workshop on Flow Assurance - Further, Deeper and Towards Excellence
Course Description
Assuring unimpeded flow from the reservoir to the refinery has game-changing impact on field development. Unnecessary investments
can be avoided, when engineers are able to characterise and understand the fluid phase behavior controlled by the flow dynamics and
production chemistry in wellbores and flow lines.
Course Objectives
This two-day course presents a holistic approach to flow assurance. The course will introduce technologies, workflows and their deployment for
the identification, characterisation and management of flow impediments, such as slugging and precipitation of organic and inorganic solids.
The course will present best practices and fit-for-purpose design and operational solutions for minimising the risk of flow stoppage
while transporting hydrocarbons from “Pore to Sales Meter”. The principles will be demonstrated using field examples from around the world.
Who Should Attend?
This course is intended for engineers and chemists in the upstream and downstream segments of the petroleum industry. This course will
also provide department, asset and technology managers with an appreciation of the risks, challenges and solutions for free flowing
hydrocarbon products.
CEUs
Engineers are responsible for enhancing their professional competence throughout their careers. Licensed, chartered, and/or certified
engineers are sometimes required by government entities to provide proof of continued professional development and training. Training
credits are defined as Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or Professional Development Hours (PDHs).
Attendees of SPE training courses earn 0.8 CEUs for each day of training. We provide each attendee a certificate upon completion of the
training course.
Course Instructors
Dr. Abul Jamaluddin is NExT Business Manager for North America and a Schlumberger Flow Assurance Advisor. He has
over 22 years of industry experience with operators and the service industry. He joined Schlumberger in 1998 and
has worked in business development and operations management in Americas, Middle East and Asia. His assignments
included NExT Unconventional Program Director, Global Flow Assurance Advisor, Reservoir Sampling and Analysis
Operations Manager for Middle East and Asia, and Fluids Business Development Manager for North and South America.
He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, Canada in 1990. He is a co-inventor of eight patented processes and
co-authored 100+ technical papers. He received three Best Technical Paper awards from GPA and CIM. He is an editor
of SPEJ Production and Operations. He chaired IQPC conference, SPE Forums and workshops. Dr. Jamaluddin was
named the SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2004 – 2005 season and the SPE Distinguished Member in 2012.
Rohaizad Mohd Norpiah is the Process Engineering Custodian for PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd (PCSB). He has over 25 years
of industry experience in process and flow assurance. He joined PETRONAS in 1988 and has worked in various countries
such as Pakistan, Sudan, Turkmenistan and others. He has been involved in review and design of most fields with flow
assurance issues operated by PCSB and partners. He earned a B. E in Chemical Engineering from Monash University in
1988 and has been serving as a discussion leader and session manager for past SPE workshops. Currently he is an
adjunct lecturer at the Universiti of Teknologi PETRONAS.
