Basketball teams and 1 Kanga Cricket team. If you are able to provide any assistance with scoring or umpiring please contact Sean Gilbert. Please come down and support the teams if you are
able.
LITERACY TIP
Some rhyme activities you may enjoy with your child are the following:
When sharing a book, you can point out the rhyming words as you read them, or pause at the
end of a sentence and get your child to complete the sentence with the rhyming word. You can
ask your child to think of another word which rhymes with the one you have said. To work on a
little auditory memory as well as rhyme, give your child three or four words, some which rhyme
and one which doesn’t. Ask them to say the word which doesn’t rhyme. The ability to be able to
hear a rhyming pattern and to generate a rhyming word is a crucial early literacy skill. Don’t forget to work on rhyme as well as sounds when your child starts to read. For more information go
to www.talktoliteracy.com.au and click on blog.
WE STILL HAVE MANY FACTION

Enrolments are now open. Swimming pools and beaches are part of our
Western Australian lifestyle. It is important for every child to learn to
swim and develop essential water safety skills.
VacSwim’s December/January school holiday swimming programs are
conducted by qualified instructors who teach children the skills to be
confident swimmers and safe in the water.
For information and to enrol, visit det.wa.edu.au/swimming.
For further information, telephone VacSwim on 9345 4007 or
email [email protected].
Last week, the Year Threes learnt about how a
trumpet works. It is from the brass family and has
three valves, or keys. You can make lots of different notes by changing the shape of your lips on the
mouthpiece. Every student was able to make a noise
when they had a turn to blow it!
Mrs Fry.
Writing in the Year 3 Classroom
During Term 3 our Year 3 class embarked upon a narrative writing project and
produced many wonderful stories that were presented at the Dally Show. I was so
proud of their efforts that I submitted their stories to the Write4Fun competition.
The standard of work throughout the class was fantastic, but ultimately five students were selected as finalists and will now have their stories published in an anthology collection called 'The Text Generation'. To have five published authors
emerge from a single school in one year is a great win for Dalwallinu District High
School and a testament to the effort and creativity of our students.
Congratulations to: Sebastian Rausch, Bella Bryant, Charlie Mills,
Ethan Bunggo & Paige Counsel.

It was cold and snowy. A girl called She-Wolf was hunting through the snow for her father because
he had cursed her. For as long as she could remember, if She-Wolf took off her cloak, she would
turn into a wolf. Her father had wanted a baby boy and when She-Wolf was born he had cursed
her to live as a wolf forever and threw her out of the house. He could do this because he was a
god and his mother had been too afraid to stop him. Her grandmother, who was a clever witch,
heard her howling and took her home. She fed her and made her a powerful magic cloak. Her
grandmother raised her and taught her how to break the curse. The only way was to kill her father.
The moon came out from behind the mountains. She-Wolf saw a cave. Inside, she saw red eyes
and pointy horns.
A voice said "I am here."
She-Wolf replied "I hope you are here to break this curse." "No," he said. "You have grown strong.
You can join me, or I can kill you and your master."
"Fine," She-Wolf replied and drew her sword. It broke with a flash and when She-Wolf could see
again, her father had disappeared.
She-Wolf was scared, she was terrified that he would kill her grandmother. She took off her cloak
and the change started. Her ears grew big, her eyes turned yellow and her skin grew fur. She-Wolf
ran and ran to catch up to him. She crashed into him, but he tossed her away like she was nothing. He turned and ripped down his skin! Underneath he was a minotaur!
She-Wolf put her cloak back on and turned into a person. She drew her other sword, but her father
kicked her in the face and she was smashed to the floor! Her father stood over her, ready to kill,
but she looked up and howled. Suddenly there was a pack of wolves rushing from the forest and
they jumped all over him, biting and snarling. She-Wolf got to her feet and found her sword.
Her father screamed and threw the wolves off him. He charged at She-Wolf with his sword. Just
as she was about to get hit she caught it on her weapon and then stabbed him through the head!
It was finally over.
She-Wolf was sad, but her mum was free. Her mum was at her grandmother’s house and when
she got there she hugged her tight. “I’ve waited so long to meet you!” she said.

One of the greatest ninjas had survived the war. His name was Iron Eyes, he was fast,
agile, sneaky, clever, skilful and quiet. His enemy had become powerful, so he had to
capture their king and many would die.
He was climbing up a mountain when he saw enemy scouts with a cart, so he moved to
investigate. He threw his ninja stars and took out the wheels one by one. The scouts
scattered away and hid. When he reached it, the cart was empty. It was a trap! Someone jumped at his head, Iron Eyes stabbed at him blindly and missed. The whole scout
troop came out and surrounded him.
Iron Eyes drew his sword and ran into the enemy. Before they could attack him, he did a
front flip and stabbed two of them from behind! More and more enemies arrived, too
many for Iron Eyes to fight, maybe even half of their entire army!
Iron Eyes threw all of his razor sharp ninja stars at them, taking out five troops, but he
realised that the rest of them were backing away. Leslum, Iron Eyes' mortal enemy
walked through their ranks towards him with an evil smile on his face. "You cannot defeat us, our army is too well trained," said Leslum. There was nothing that Iron Eyes
could do.
"What about a duel?" suggested Iron Eyes.
"Mwahahahahaah! Do you really believe you can defeat me?" laughed Leslum.
"I will stake my life on it," Iron Eyes replied.
Iron Eyes readied his sword. Leslum drew his out. Suddenly Iron Eyes leapt over him,
but Leslum blasted him with a fireball. Iron Eyes used his sword to shield himself the fire
as he landed. Leslum poured a wave of flame at the ninja, but he would not give up! He
pushed forwards, getting closer and closer. The whole army watched in amazement as
he stabbed Leslum through the chest!
When Iron Eyes turned to face them, he found that all of his enemies were now bowing
down to him as their new leader! "We have work to do!" Iron Eyes said. He led them to
the castle to try and capture the King.
To be continued...
This year’s NAIDOC theme honours all Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have
fought in defence of country. From our warriors in
the Frontier Wars to our warriors who have served
with honour and pride in Australia’s military conflicts
and engagements across the globe.
The design for the colouring competition was
inspired by this year’s NAIDOC with our
warriors of the future in mind.
Mr Langfield, Thomas Davis & Aiden Brockman
worked together to design the characters, the
male in the design represents the Aboriginal people and the female represents the Torres Strait
Islander people. The Rainbow snake is also represented as it is well known across Australian by all
Aboriginal people and has a different name
amongst the many different language groups.
I would like to thank Mr Langfeild, Thomas &
Aiden for their time and effort they have put into
bringing their ideas together to design such a
moorditj picture. The design is so popular that
our many of our special guest’s on NAIDOC Day
have asked for a copy.
