Welcome to Hereford

Rich Allen - in the wars at Old Laurentian
Welcome to Hereford
We said we were now running into the heavy traffic
at the top of the league and it starts today with the
visit of second placed Hereford. We therefore welcome
their players, supporters and committee persons to
Glasshouse Lane for a true ‘eight pointer’ with both
teams level on thirty five points with eight wins and one
loss. Hereford have claimed second spot due to their
superior points difference having scored 258 with 147
against. Their only loss to date came away at Crewe
& Nantwich and last week they had a very creditable
15-7 win away at Worcester Wanderers.
Last season Kenilworth were soundly beaten in the
opening fixture at Hereford – 17-40. In the return fixture
at a very wet and sandy Glasshouse Lane, and before
most of the pre match lunch guests had made their way
to the touch-line, Hereford had scored two splendid
tries and raced into a big half-time lead. However our
boys never gave up and we ended up ‘winning’ the
second half in a spirited 22-40 defeat.
This season’s results have given many pointers to
the game today and they suggest a close game with the
victors claiming second spot in the league. One thing for
sure is it will be played on grass! As well as being tied
in the league it would appear that both Hereford and
ourselves are also in a race to move to a new ground.
All the objections to the plans for their new ground
have now been dismissed by the High Court and there
is now detailed planning going on and it is hoped that
Hereford should be able to move to a new ground in
about three years.
By the time you are reading this programme
our Pirates would have had their first outing of the
season today when they took on Richmond Heavies
this morning.

TODAY’S LUNCH
Old Laurentian heading Banbury and Malvern in Mids
2 west south. Both Leamington and Old Leamingtonians
are still struggling at the wrong end of this table.
In Nat League 3 midlands it is still South Leicester
with nine wins out of nine leading from Nuneaton.
Burton and Dudley K are still at the foot of this league.
For your further interest Broadstreet, now in National
League 2 north, are lying second bottom with two wins.
Our old friends Ampthill are leading this league.
Today we welcome many of our Minis & Juniors
Coaches for their annual pre match lunch. The lunch
is offered as a wee thank you to our very successful
M&J section and if you wish to see how successful
they are then venture down to the Rocky Lane site on
a Sunday morning where you will see 300+ kids from
all age groups from U6 upwards, either training or
playing, some age groups having more than one team.
These kids need to be coached and can only learn the
basics of rugby from qualified coaches and the club
takes this opportunity to thank you all for your efforts.
The success of the M&J section can be seen on the
pitch today with fifteen of our current first XV squad
(of thirty three) having graduated through the system.
KENILWORTH RFC – 90th SEASON
Kenilworth RFC were
formed in 1924 and played
their first game on Sept 20th.
Hence we have something to
celebrate this 90th season!
First on the agenda is a Dinner/
Disco to be held at the club on
the 6th Dec. Other events are in the advanced stage
of planning, including a Six Nations Dinner and a pre
match Anniversary Lunch (on the 7th Feb). It is hoped to
conclude the celebrations with a special game in May
featuring two special guest teams. It is also planned to
make the year a big fund raising event and fund raising
activities will be co-ordinated around the theme ‘90’.
MIDLANDS 1 west
Newport are still undefeated at the top of our
league with nine wins out of nine and they are our
next visitors to Glasshouse Lane on the 13th Dec.
We are currently in third spot behind Hereford on
points difference and one point ahead of Worcester
Wanderers who we play away next week. At the
foot of the league are Silhillians, the only team in the
league yet to win, and they are in a group with Barkers
Butts, Berkswell & Balsall and Stratford who are now
becoming detached at the foot.
In the feeder leagues below Bridgnorth are still
heading Mids 2 west north from Moseley Oak with

were paired with Old Laurentian but we have now
been informed that they have withdrawn (due to a big
injury list) and we now find ourselves in the semi final
alongside Nuneaton, Sutton Coldfield and Spartans – no
prizes for guessing our ideal draw! The Colts are now
down to play away at Nuneaton next week (22nd Nov) in
the third round of the National Colts Cup. The Cavaliers
had a rather disappointing defeat at Old Laurentian in
the second round of the Warwickshire Second XV Cup.
Afternoon all……. Today I want to remind you how
tough winter is for birds - as temperatures fall, regular
supplies of food and fresh water become ever more
important to help them survive the cold months and
emerge in good condition for the breeding season next
year. Do make sure clean water is available, especially
in freezing conditions. At this time of year, put out food
and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, feed
twice daily if you can: in the morning and in the early
afternoon. Birds require high energy (high fat) foods
during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat
reserves to survive the frosty nights. Bird cake and food
bars are very good because of their high-fat content, as
are peanuts. Bird seed mixtures are also high in oils. You
can also feed kitchen scraps, such as fat and suet, mild
grated cheese, cooked potatoes, pastry and dried fruit.
However please remember not to give the birds
salted peanuts - most garden birds cannot process salt
and will die if they are given too much. It’s best to avoid
offering garden birds any foods that contain lots of salt
including salted peanuts, salty bacon, chips and crisps.
Also as a general rule, only put out peanuts in metal
mesh feeders. This means that birds cannot take whole
nuts, which can choke young birds. It is also important
not to use nylon mesh bags, as these can trap birds’ feet
Always adjust the quantity given to the demand,
and never allow uneaten foods to accumulate around
the feeders. Once you establish a feeding routine, try
not to change it as the birds will become used to it and
time their visits to your garden accordingly.
Moving on…few things are more pleasurable than
gardening. The challenge I give you all for next year is
to try something new! The action of setting something
new, learning and experimenting, pushing the envelope
of understanding. You need to be inspired and feel
challenged whilst gardening and always welcome
new possibilities and surprises. It takes courage to rip
things out, but you will get confidence after a while.
The main thing is always think positive and want to
build on successes and correct mistakes as much as
you can. What I’m trying to say is, try something new,
rather than stay safe…..go on give it a go!
And finally a tip for mid-November: Get going on
planting tulip bulbs at two or three times their own
depth. If the soil is heavy, add a layer of coarse grit
beneath the bulb to prevent them from rotting.

NEWS OF FORMER PLAYERS
(always welcome!)
Luke Watts recently starred for Malta in their
recent 31-26 win over Croatia and if anyone wishes to
see a report on the game then ask Willie W and I will
forward one on.
I hope you all saw Will Owen on the telly last week
in the Championship select win over Canada.
There are rumours that messrs Burnside, Hersey
and Barnes may well be attending our game at
Richmond today.
OUR NEXT LEAGUE GAMES
Next week we are away at another of the top sides
in the league, Worcester Wanderers. Worcester play
at Sixways, Pershore Lane, Worcester, WR3 8ZE. The
following week, 29th Nov is now a free Saturday. The
6th Dec see us travel to Leek and they play at Esterchem
Park, Chestnut Walk, Cheddleton, ST13 7BJ. We then
close the first half of the fixtures with a home game
against league leaders Newport on the 13th Dec, our
Christmas Lunch.
LAST FEW WEEKS & SQUAD NEWS
Two more league wins for the first XV and we
are now eight out of nine but the Cavaliers exited the
Second XV cup.
Our first ever game with Crewe & Nantwich ended
up in a solid win, 26-17 but not without a scare when
they pulled us back to 20-17. However Mr Dependable
Josh Hickman got us back on track with two late
penalties. Our try scorers were man of the match
vi
Pete Nancarrow and James Wadey, his second in two
games. The following game at Earlsdon was equally as
tense but it should not have been as we should have
been out of site after 30 minutes. However we went
into the closing period at 20 apiece only for us to score
two spectacular late tries. Star of the day was Arthur
Haynes with three tries, Gaz Renowden scoring the
other for his first of the season.
The Colts have had one win (Old Leamingtonians)
and two defeats (Southam and Old Coventrians) in
their outings, similar to the Cavaliers who defeated
Old Leamingtonians but have lost to Old Laurentian
and Leamington. The 3’s have played twice losing to
Old Leamingtonians and defeating Leamington.

Peacock’s Corner
Greetings sports fans,
Today is massive for Stuart Lancaster. Back-to-back
defeats at Twickenham just ten months from a World
Cup? It’s not looking good. Conceivably, England could
lose three times in November. At home. Lancaster
knows the clock is now ticking and that he has to find
answers to the major problems that have beset his
England regeneration.
Lancaster does the style very well; now it’s about
substance. It’s not about getting family members to
write to players telling them how proud they should
be. It’s not about meeting with players’ wives and
girlfriends and telling them how important they are to
Team England. It’s about results. Winning and losing.
And so far under Lancaster, England have lost more big
games than they have won.
Five defeats on the bounce to New Zealand; no
wins in four against South Africa. Losses to Australia,
France and two to Wales, one of them a hammering.
It’s amazing how much time one decent result against
the All Blacks can buy you.
In some ways, circumstances have conspired
against Lancaster. Ireland have brought in Joe Schmidt
and Les Kiss and they have already transformed
them into a machine capable of sticking 30 points on
the Springboks. That was a weakened Ireland side,
incidentally. Vern Cotter, Schmidt’s boss at Clermont,
has already made an impact with Scotland. In Heyneke
Meyer, the Springboks have arguably the best coach of
them all and in appointing Michael Cheika, Heineken
Cup and Super Rugby winner, the Wallabies are only
going to get better.
The rugby world is moving forward and England
[and Wales, thankfully] are standing still. People say
injuries haven’t helped Lancaster but the truth is he has
more professional rugby players to choose from than
any other nation. No, make no mistake, it’s time for him
to deliver. For all the slick marketing and ‘Team England’
schtick it’s about results now, not ‘performances’.
He’s had time and he has picked the wrong players.
Everyone knows England won’t win the World Cup
with a slow back row: it’s that simple. After two years
in the job he doesn’t know his best centre or wing
pairings. He’s tried Barritt, Tuilagi, Joseph, Turner-Hall,
Twelvetrees, Burrell, Tomkins, Eastmond, Watson,
May, Ashton, Nowell, Brown, Strettle, Wade, Yarde
viii
and Rokoduguni. There may be others but they were
so bad we’ve forgotten.
One good bit of news from the weekend was
that the Welsh lost to Australia for the tenth - count
them - time in a row. We can always takes solace in
the knowledge that it’s always worse in Wales. The
classy Cardiff bunch even resorted to heckling Michael
Foley, the Wallabies goal kicker, and booing their own
Rhys Priestland when he came on. Biggest cheer at
Twickenham next year will be if Dan Biggar starts.
Arthur Haynes, hat trick hero at Earlsdon
A MILLION & A BILLION DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE?
Did you know that 1 million seconds is just over
11 days whilst one billion seconds is more than 31
years! It is hard to grasp the massive chasm between
a million and a billion when they are used almost
interchangeably in the media. For example, if a soldout West End theatre show had a millionaire in every
seat, they would have the same net worth as one or
two billionaires sitting alone in the front row.
The £133 billion given to banks works out at £2000
per person whist the £7m for guarding Julian Assange
is only 10p per person.
