Thalben-Ball (1896-1987) was an organist and composer who, though originally from Australia, spent most of his life in Britain. He studied organ and piano at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London, which he entered at the unusually young age of 14. After graduating from the RCM, the young man was asked to deputise as organist at London’s Temple Church by its then organist, Sir Henry Walford Davies. In 1923, he succeeded Walford Davies as organist and director of the Temple Church choir, a post he held for nearly 60 years. He received the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1967 and was knighted in 1982. The postlude is the Herald March by Ohioan Mark Thewes (b. 1954). Mark presently serves as the Organist and Director of Music at Westbrook Park United Methodist Church. His educational background includes a Bachelor’s of Music in organ performance from the University of Akron, Ohio; and a Masters of Music in organ performance from the University of Akron, Ohio. by Dr. Gil Haas A paucity of priests has led the Episcopal church to a variety of strategies. The most familiar is a seminary trained priest who attends an Episcopal seminary for three years. These priests have discerned a call to priesthood as their primary profession and source of income. However, isolated small congregations struggle to afford a full time priest, even a shared one. Supply clergy (typically retired seminary priests) are often employed in this situation, but in many instances supply priests are unavailable. To meet this need, bi-vocational priests and permanent deacons serve as sacramental leaders of smaller congregations while earning their primary income from outside the church. In our diocese, these clergy are trained through a program of the Iona School in Houston, TX. Finally, there are Canon 9, or local clergy. These clergy serve in a location which is “small, isolated, remote, or distinct in respect to ethnic composition, language, or culture.” Persons proposed to be a local clergy are usually a leader in their congregation, and their ordination is proposed by the congregation. The canonical requirements for these priests are greatly reduced. Local clergy will not move from the congregation for which they were ordained. The Cathedral Choir sings a setting of Psalm 25, “Ad te levavi” by Austrian composer Franz Xaver Witt (18341888). Witt was a Catholic priest, church musician, and composer. He was a leading figure in the Cecilian movement for the reform of Catholic church music in the second half of the 19th century. He taught Gregorian chant at the seminary at Regensburg. In 1868 Witt founded the Caecilia Society in order to revive the use of Gregorian chant and polyphony, and to promote the composition of new liturgical music in an older style in churches. Before the Service Please keep a moment of silence to prepare your hearts and minds for worship and if you so desire you may use the following prayer: Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen. Prelude 3 Tune in E G. Thalben-Ball Collect for Purity W BCP 323 Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. [Please stand if you are able] Processional Hymn Hymnal 59, verses 1-5 Hark! a thrilling voice is sounding. “Christ is nigh,” it seems to say; “Cast away the works of darkness, O ye children of the day.” Summary of the Law Wakened by the solemn warning, from earth’s bondage let us rise; Christ, our sun, all sloth dispelling, shines upon the morning skies. BCP 324 Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Lo! the Lamb, so long expected, comes with pardon down from heaven; let us haste, with tears of sorrow, one and all to be forgiven; The Gloria so when next he comes with glory, and the world is wrapped in fear, may he with his mercy shield us, and with words of love draw near. BCP 324 Hymnal S202 Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, W art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Honor, glory, might, and blessing to the Father and the Son, with the everlasting Spirit while unending ages run. Opening Acclamation BCP 323, Hymnal S77 W Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. 4 Collect The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. [Please kneel if you are able] Psalm 123 BCP 184 Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that, by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Lesson Domine refugium To you I lift up my eyes, to you enthroned in the heavens. As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, [You may be seated] So our eyes look to the LORD our God, until he show us his mercy. Judges 4:1-7 Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy, for we have had more than enough of contempt, A Reading from the Book of Judges. Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich, and of the derision of the proud. The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, after Ehud died. So the LORD sold them into the hand of King Jabin of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-ha-goiim. Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly twenty years. At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel. She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for judgment. She sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, “The LORD, the God of Israel, commands you, `Go, take position at Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from the tribe of Naphtali and the tribe of Zebulun. I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin’s army, to meet you by the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand.’” Lesson 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 A Reading from the First Epistle to the Thessalonians. Concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5 so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing. bringing five more talents, saying, `Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ His master said to him, `Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, `Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.’ His master said to him, `Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, `Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master replied, `You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “ The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. [Please stand if you are able] Gospel Hymn Hymnal 524, verses 1-3 I love thy kingdom, Lord, the house of thine abode, the Church our blest Redeemer saved with his own precious blood. For her my tears shall fall; for her my prayers ascend; to her my cares and toils be given, till toils and cares shall end. Beyond my highest joy I prize her heavenly ways, her sweet communion, solemn vows, her hymns of love and praise. Gospel Matthew 25:14-30 W W W The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. Gospel Hymn Jesus said, “For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, Hymnal 524, verses 4-5 Jesus, thou friend divine, our Savior and our King, thy hand from every snare and foe shall great deliverance bring. Sure as thy truth shall last, to Zion shall be given the brightest glories earth can yield, and brighter bliss of heaven. 6 Sermon [You may be seated after the sermon opening prayer] We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Lord, have mercy. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Lord, have mercy. 7 Confession For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, (Special intentions) let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. BCP 331 Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. [Silence is kept] Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings: the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the Diocesan cycle of prayer (Special intentions), and in the Cathedral cycle of prayer (Special intentions), let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For all those who are celebrating special occasions, (Special intentions) let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. W And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear and for the recently departed, especially (Special intentions) let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord. Absolution That we may end our lives in faith and hope, without suffering and without reproach, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. BCP 332 Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, W have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the communion of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed Paul and of all the saints, let us commend ourselves, and one another, and all our life, to Christ our God. To thee, O Lord our God. [The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect] 8 Comfortable Words Offertory Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him. Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. John 3:16 God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 1 Timothy 1:15 This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 John 2:1-2 If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. Peace Ad te levavi animam meam: Deus meus, in te confido, non erubescam: neque irrideant me inimici mei: et enim universi, qui te exspectant, non confundentur. [Please stand if you are able] Doxology BCP 332 Great Thanksgiving [You may share a greeting of peace with those near you] Welcome Hymnal 380, verse 3 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: W praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. [Please stand if you are able] The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Text: Psalm 25:1-3 Music: Franz Xaver Witt Eucharistic Prayer I BCP 334, Hymnal S112 The Lord be with you. And with thy Spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. [You may be seated] Offertory Sentence BCP 376, Psalm 96:8 Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Proper Preface BCP 344 Creator of the light and source of life, who hast made us in thine image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. 9 Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Sanctus And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood. Hymnal S114 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. W Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. [Please kneel if you are able] All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, W be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord; Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son our Savior Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same. 10 The Lord’s Prayer Hymnal S119 And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. [You may be seated] Communion of the People Communion Hymn Hymnal 53, verses 1-4 Once he came in blessing, all our ills redressing; came in likeness lowly, Son of God most holy; bore the cross to save us, hope and freedom gave us. Still he comes within us, still his voice would win us from the sins that hurt us, would to Truth convert us: not in torment hold us, but in love enfold us. Fraction Hymnal S154 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Prayer of Humble Access BCP 337 We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Invitation to Communion The Gifts of God for the People of God. Thus, if thou canst name him, not ashamed to claim him, but wilt trust him boldly nor dost love him coldly, he will then receive thee, heal thee, and forgive thee. Hymnal S158 O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins 11 of the world, grant us thy peace. One who thus endureth bright reward secureth. Come, then, O Lord Jesus, from our sins release us; let us here confess thee till in heaven we bless thee. Post-communion Prayer Let us pray. BCP 339 [Please stand or kneel if you are able] Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed; yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, “How long?” and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war she waits the consummation of peace for evermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blessed, and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest. Blessing BCP 339 The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, W the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen. Yet she on earth hath union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. [Please stand if you are able] Closing Hymn Hymnal 525, verses 1-5 The Dismissal The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word: from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Alleluia, Alleluia. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia. Postlude Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth, her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.
