JOINING in the current ‘Go Green’ trend,
Sekolah Vokasional Sultan Bolkiah (SVSB) recently took to promoting habit of recycling at
the school.
A total of three recycling bins courtesy of
Daikyo Environmental Recycling Sdn Bhd
were placed at the school compound,
marking the first recycle activity to be organised at SVSB. One of the school clubs, known
as Environmental Awareness Initiative Team
organised the project as part of their ongoing
activities to provided awareness among students and staff in SVSB regarding their environment.
The team, which is led by one of the
teachers, Mohd Zainor Hj Zainal said that
they are trying to encourage people to do recycling.
As such, the programme aimed at staff,
teachers and students of SVSB to take up the
habit of recycling everyday items that can be
found and often used around at schools, such
as aluminium cans, glass and plastic bottles.
The recycling activity is one of the newest
initiatives made by the school club to cultivate green activities into the school. A series
of environmental-friendly projects will also
follow suit in order to continuosly instill the
nature to care for the environment among
the SVSB students and teachers, and hope
that the practice will be carried on not just in
school, but also at home and public places. –

Is cyber security important?
HOW aware are you in placing importance
on cyber security?
In today’s fast paced world where technology keeps innovating every few months,
consumers get easily enthralled by the
latest gadgets and apps and for a number of
them, they tend to forget that with the good
such as greater connectivity and interactivity, comes the bad in the form of
leaked personal and sensitive data among
others.
The Brunei Times asked members of the
public their opinions on the importance of
cyber security and advise on protecting
oneself in cyberspace.

SMSA gains insight on remote school
BELAIT
THE Sociology Department of Sayyidina Ali
Secondary School (SMSA) recently gained insight on education in remote areas during its
Teaching Outreach programme to a primary
school in the interiors of Belait.
Led by Head of Department Azean Hj Mohammad and accompanied by a Psychology
tutor, Asyraf Hj Yussof, the trip to Orang Kaya
Pemancha Berandai Primary School at Bukit
Sawat was not only aimed at enhancing students’ outlook of education in remote areas,
it was also to evaluate the compensatory education made available in such areas.
During the trip, students had the opportunity to interact with the primary students
whilst incorporating an educational based
activity ranging from colouring activities, pop
quiz and presentation about “Myself”.
Reflecting on the recent programme, Sherilyn Chua voiced out her opinions regarding
her experience. “Teaching the primary students of Bukit Sawat was truly a new and
great experience for me and my teammates.
It was exhilarating to learn about the different cultures and attitudes of the children.”
On the overall programme, a representative of the students as well as the Head of the
Student Representative Council Department,
Md Hazwan Suhaimy said, “It was definitely a
new experience for all of us to engage in the

“In my opinion, the awareness of cyber security is important as we
know that it involves protecting information by preventing,
detecting, and responding to attacks. And although most aspects
of our lives, including communications and education, rely on the
Internet and computers, we must be very careful when it comes to
using the Internet, especially social media as malicious intentions
are everywhere. Also, be aware of gadgets and apps as there are a
number that are designed to steal private and personal
information.”
to be proven wrong after spending four days
in the nation and has been enjoying the trip
so far. Ak Faiz Pg Saheffuldin, a lower six student at the sixth form centre, was happy to
have met a new friend from abroad.
“Other than the fact that we Bruneians are
a bit on the quiet side and the Singaporeans
are more inquisitive and chatty, I’m surprised
that we are the same,” he said, talking about
the exchange session they had with the
Singaporean students earlier where they
shared things such as their daily school life,
subjects and extracurricular activities.

AS THEIR final project for their Diploma in
Travel and Tourism Services in Maktab
Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal (MTSSR), five students recently organised a tour of the Hana
Soy and World (B) Sdn Bhd (HSWB) factory at
the BINA Industrial Complex in Serambangun, Tutong.
Titled Culinary Tourism in Brunei, the students, led by Nurul Hamizah Nurdin, reached
out and promoted their tour through social
media and posters. As a result, a dozen
people from various institutions and professions joined the tour to take a look at how soy
drinks were made.
Prior to the tour, the group attended a
short presentation on the company. This was
then followed by a demonstration on how the
soy beans, non-GMO (genetically modified organism) beans imported from Canada, are
processed in the factory. They also got to taste
two versions of the Suku Suku drinks that
HSWB makes — the original version and the
other, a trial version.

both schools to get a sense of what they
learned from the visit. “We’re here not just to
see the tourist attractions of Brunei but to
also learn about the economy of Brunei and
the roles the youths play within the economy
and learn the difference between the Brunei
and Singapore educational systems,” said

“Evolusi teknologi maklumat dan komunikasi (ICT) masa kini
berkembang dengan begitu pesat dan telah mengubah gaya
hidup masyarakat dunia termasuk rakyat Brunei. Saya sendiri
juga menggunakan teknologi sebegini untuk melakukan kerja
sekolah saya.
melalui siber sebegini seperti penipuan,
penggodaman dan lain-lain lagi. Oleh itu,
kesedaran mengenai keselamatan siber
perlulah di ambil berat. Dengan adanya
kesedaran sebegini dapat meningkatkankesedaran orang ramai mengenai keselamatan
siber dan dalam mendidik masyarakat Brunei
mengenai kepentingan keselamatan siber serta
tatacara penggunaan Internet secara positif
dan berhemah.”
