The Benefits of Shopping Locally
As we gear up for the festive holiday season, the Wadsworth Area
Chamber of Commerce is hosting “Come Home for the Holidays,” a
program that reminds our community to shop local.
I found this great article by Alyssa Gregory about shopping locally and
thought our membership would enjoy the information:
The Importance of Shopping and Doing Business Locally
More and more, people are being encouraged to shop locally. This
movement isn’t just a fad, and it has benefits that reach beyond keeping
small mom and pop retailers afloat in a difficult economy.
Here are just a few reasons why it’s important to shop - and do
business - local whenever possible.
Shopping local stimulates the local economy.
When you shop at locally-owned stores, the money you spend stays
within the community. That’s because local businesses are more likely to

purchase from other local businesses. The result is that the local tax base grows and you can help your
local businesses keep each other growing. A stronger tax base means improved schools, better roads and
greater support for your local police and fire departments.
It creates local jobs.
Small businesses are big employers. With jobs being created right where you live, your friends, neighbors
and family can find jobs closer to home. That has a huge impact on family, community and the environment
because it cuts back on commute times.

Shopping local directly benefits you.
Because local businesses help grow the economic base of your community, the dollars you spend have a
domino effect. In many ways, that money will eventually find its way back to you.

That’s not all. Small towns can survive difficult downturns in the economy with a thriving local business
center. Shopping local keeps your neighborhoods safe and beautiful and stabilizes home values.
2014 Directors
Remember, you don’t have to shop local every time to make an impact. Getting in the mindset of shopping
and doing business locally first is all it takes to start improving your community.

The Third Holiday Flavors of the Chamber Veterans Day Ceremony
Holiday Flavors of the Chamber originated in 2012 when the
Chamber received calls and emails from our members inquiring
about Chamber food service members who offer prepared holiday
foods for office parties and home parties. The Inn at CoalRidge
invited us to their beautiful facility as a place to sample delicious
food offered by our members.
This year’s event is Wednesday, November 19, 5:30-8:00 p.m.,
at The Inn at CoalRidge. It’s a great evening of networking,
discovering delectable ways to make your holidays easier and
supporting fellow Chamber members. (See included flyer.)

Four Tips for Becoming a More Effective Communicator and Leader
Greg L. Thomas, Leadership Excellence, Ltd.
Great leaders know how to talk and communicate with people in ways that will inspire them to take action. Terrific interpersonal
communicators indubitably have keen situational awareness and possess contextual understanding of the following elements of the
communication process: their responsibilities in communicating the subject, the occasion and purpose for the message, and the
needs of the audience and the feedback provided by that group about how well the message is being received. Unfortunately, many
people who find themselves in positions of leadership are not innately gifted interpersonal communicators either because they lack
the wherewithal to be cognizant of some elements of the communication process or because they lack certain traits that resonate with
others. As a result, they may not be able to effectively reach the people they need in a manner that will get them the results they desire.
So let’s take a look at some tips that can help make anyone a more effective communicator and, by extension, a better leader.
Wadsworth Job and Career Fair
The Wadsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, in
partnership with the City of Wadsworth and Ohio
Means Jobs Medina County, hosted a Job and
Career Fair on October 17, 2014, at Wadsworth High
School. Thirty employers visited with over 100 job
seekers and many great connections were made.
1. Be trustworthy and forthright. Don’t try to be something you’re not. Be genuine about who you are and what you desire. If
people sense duplicity on your part, you are more likely to lose their trust. Once you’ve lost trust, it is hard to effectively rally people
to your cause. Furthermore, people are more likely to forgive mistakes you make if they perceive that you are trustworthy rather
than if they believe you are dishonest or hiding something. Don’t be deceptively accommodating or flattering. Try to be direct
without being insulting or hard on people. You shouldn’t mince words, but you shouldn’t get personal either. Keep it about the
business at hand, and don’t be afraid to speak from your heart as well as with your mind.
2. Listen empathetically. One terrific way to build trust with your employees or associates is to listen to their concerns. Practice
servant leadership by giving real consideration and attention to others’ wants and needs. Make legitimate attempts to address
their concerns. This will allow you to relate to your audience in a more personal way, which will go a long way in establishing
a meaningful relationship between you. If people feel that you are invested in them, they will be much more likely to invest in
you, which will make it much easier for you to inspire them to share in your vision, accept your ideas, and work to meet your
expectations. Of course, listening with empathy necessitates that you keep an open mind, but you may find that at the very least
hearing different ideas and points of view will help both you and your enterprise stay sharp and vibrant.
3. Speak with knowledge, clarity, and specificity. If you deliver a muddled message, you’re likely to get a confused and
disjointed response. Additionally, you may begin to lose the audience’s attention and their confidence in your ability to lead them
to success. In today’s fast-paced world, it pays to be clear and concise when establishing expectations or giving directives. It also
pays to show some mastery of the subject because people will not enthusiastically follow someone who seems to lack credible
command of the situation or expertise in the area.
4. Convey an engaging narrative. Storytellers have been around since prehistory because people remember stories, particularly
stories that touch people personally. Sharing a narrative and connecting it to the work your employees or associates are doing will
give them a greater sense of purpose, ownership, and belonging. If you can deliver such a narrative to your audience - especially
if you can do so while making every person in the group feel like an important individual who is vital to the success of the mission
- you can speak to the hearts and souls of your people and not only persuade them to share your vision but also motivate them to
work for the successful accomplishment of your shared goals.
Being a capable, competent leader and communicator requires more than a good message. If you aren’t connecting with
people on a visceral level, your attempts to lead may very well fall short no matter how worthwhile the content of the message is.
Consistently applying these four tips in your interpersonal communications will likely make you a more effective communicator, and
in time you may find that you have also become a more successful leader than you had ever been before.

Should We Play or Pay?
Understanding Health Care Reform
Jeff Novak, Advanced Insurance Designs, Inc.
Larger employers are trying to figure out how to deal with the Affordable Care Act’s “Employer Shared Responsibility Provision,” which requires applicable large employers to either
offer health insurance in 2015, or else pay a tax penalty. The Employer Shared Responsibility Provision goes into effect in 2015 for employers with 100+ employees, and goes into
effect in 2016 for employers with 50-99 employees.
Play or pay is a concept that requires employers with over 100 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) employees to provide health insurance to their employees in 2015 (“play”) or pay a tax or
premium toward a publicly provided system that covers people without private insurance (“pay”).
Companies with 50 or more full-time employees and equivalents (FTE) may be subject to a penalty if they do not offer medical coverage that provides minimum essential coverage
(MEC), is affordable and meets minimum value requirements. FTEs are based on a combination of hours worked by average count part-time employees (those who work less than
30 hours per week)
What if I have multiple Tax ID numbers?
The same IRS aggregation rules under IRC section 414(b), (c), (m) and (o) used by pension plans will be used to determine if subsidiaries and jointly owned companies will be
treated as one.
Penalty
For plan years beginning in 2015, the penalty is $2,000 for each full-time employee minus the first 80 employees. For plan years beginning in 2016 and beyond, employers can
exclude 30 employees from the penalty calculation. $3000 per FTE receiving subsidy.
