Wadsworth has a long and proud history of committed, non-profit organizations touching and enriching the lives of the community through education, healthcare, arts and culture, and social services. These non-profits agencies, dedicated to making strong, positive impacts on our community, serve as partners with business and government, solve community problems and care for those in need. At the same time they are providing much-need services, they are strengthening the community, as well. In fact, our government relies heavily on non-profit agencies to pick up the slack and respond quickly to community needs. Foremost is that non-profits are driven by its service mission and searching for ways to respond to the community’s needs rather than by profit; non-profits serve everyone, regardless of ability to pay; and non-profits are governed by a volunteer Board of community leaders who are motivated by public services. The Wadsworth Chamber has 40 non-profit organizations as members. Some of these organizations are service organizations, such as the Wadsworth Kiwanis Club, the Rotary Club of Wadsworth and the Wadsworth Lion’s Club, that maintain a mission of community service. Other organizations provide education, such as Wadsworth City Schools, the Wayne College, University of Akron, Medina County University Center and the Wadsworth Public Library. Some provide health care, such as Medina Hospital, the Medina County Health Department and Hospice of Medina County. Others offer different types of growth, such as Medina County Economic Development Corporation and Leadership Medina County. Still, others offer help in any way they can, such as the Wadsworth Salvation Army and Community Action Wayne/Medina. Each one of us has a story how a non-profit organization touched our life. You might have known a senior citizen who wanted to attend a grandson’s wedding but couldn’t afford the trip and called The HANDS Foundation. Maybe you needed to get in touch with someone in the military on an emergency basis and contacted the American Red Cross. You might have planned a family reunion at a park and called the Medina County Parks District to reserve a pavilion. You might be the parent of a child with developmental disabilities and contacted the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Society for Handicapped Citizens or Medina Creative Housing, or maybe even called all three agencies. At the core of all of these non-profit organizations are volunteers. Each one of these organizations must count on community volunteers to provide services and assistance. That’s why we designate our January 28 Chamber luncheon meeting to highlight the nonprofit agencies that serve Wadsworth and Medina County. Please join us to learn about these organizations and consider stepping into the role of a muchneeded volunteer. We are thankful to live in a community where so many non-profits provide services to anyone and everyone. Michael grew up in Norton and married his high school sweetheart. He and Lisa then settled in Wadsworth because they were attracted by the “fine schools, great amenities and small town atmosphere.” Graduating from The University of Akron with a marketing degree, Michael has since acquired a great deal of small and large business experience. ichael started with The Post as the Wadsworth M Local Sales Manager. In this role, he grew to know the Wadsworth business owners and helped with their advertising needs, while learning the day-to-day workings of producing a weekly paper. In his new overall Sales Manager role, he retains his Wadsworth responsibilities but will also help organize the activities of all of The Post sales professionals to help both small and large businesses with innovative marketing plans. Committed to Northeast Ohio, Michael believes in the positive quality of life that this area provides. His family, including adult children, either live or work in Wadsworth. Some do both! Nominees must have earned at least 30 credit hours at Wayne College in Orrville or at the Holmes Campus in Millersburg. This year’s recipient was Karl Stroh, the College’s first graduate, who was awarded the recognition posthumously, following his passing earlier in the year. A Wayne College is a regional branch of The U University of Akron and offers associate and certificate programs as well as the first two years of general bachelor’s degree courses for students who intend to complete their studies at the Akron campus or another college or university. At the January 28 and February 25 luncheon meetings of the Wadsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, you have the opportunity to vote to recognize the great accomplishments of the past year. Nominations are due by February 28, 2015. 8 Brazilian Group Comes to Wadsworth and Area Catch the swing and rhythm of urban Brazil as Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) wraps up the 2014-15 World Tour of Music Series with Paulo Padilha and Group, with a sizzling concert at Highland High School on February 21, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. With generous underwriting from Arts Midwest, this highly- acclaimed group combines clever lyrics with a mischievous sense of humor. Paulo Padilha’s songs take interest in everything from mother-in-law as muse to philosophic ramblings on art. A little samba, a little pop - you’ll dance all the way home! The group will offer school workshops during the week at Wadsworth, Wadsworth and Northwest High Schools. Tom and his wife, Barb, live in Wadsworth and have two sons and are active in the First Christian Church of Wadsworth. www.wadsworthchamber.com Employers Must File Taxes, Make Payments Electronically Lisa Beamer, CPA, Rea & Associates, New Philadelphia office Starting this January, employers filing in the state of Ohio will be required to use the Ohio Business Gateway (OBG) to file and remit payment for state and school district income tax withholding returns, according to the Ohio Department of Taxation. The new rule was finalized earlier this month and will go into effect on January 1, 2015. The OBG Electronic Filing system was established to save Ohio time and money by simplifying business’ relationships with government agencies while providing them with an easier means to comply with regulatory requirements. However, it is understood that some employers may not be able to use the electronic filing system at this time, which prompted the department to allow some preparers to opt out of the requirement if they can establish a valid reason for why they are unable to comply. To opt out of the department’s new rule, employers must provide the department with the following information on form WT OOR, including their: • Business name • Address • Phone number • Employer withholding number and Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) • Withholding type • Detailed reason for the request to be excluded from electronic filing and payment provisions. 11 “Preparers seeking to opt out of electronic filing must present strongly compelling reasons to justify the waiver of the requirement,” the department states in the Frequently Asked Questions page of its website. “Preparers filing tax returns with the state of Ohio should plan to comply with the electronic filing mandate and not assume that their request to opt out will be granted.” Anyone may apply to be excused from the electronic filing requirement and permitted to file their return by nonelectronic means. However, if approval is given, it is only valid for one year. Preparers are required to resubmit their requests annually. The opt out request form can be found on the “Forms” portal of the department’s website or by calling 888.405.4039 - option 1. Otherwise, you may register or log in to use the Ohio Business Gateway. Here’s how it works - Chamber members donate baskets of goodies and services for live auction bidding during the March 25th Chamber luncheon. Since its inception in 1996, this foundation has provided over $82,000 in book scholarships to graduating Wadsworth High School Seniors. Did you know that the Chamber’s monthly 50/50 raffle proceeds are also included in these scholarships? Our fast-talking and fabulous auctioneer, Joe McNeill, FirstMerit Bank, is returning again this year. Last year, he set the record for speedy auctioneering - 60 live auction baskets in 55 minutes! Scholarships are awarded at the May Senior Night and recipients are judged on business major, character of student, community involvement and grades. The scholarship selection committee consists of the Wadsworth Chamber’s Board of Directors and the Mayor of Wadsworth. Last year, we were able to award eleven $500 book scholarships. For the second year, we are presenting the $1,000, “The David B. Hopkins Memorial Scholarship,” in loving memory of Dave Hopkins, who passed away unexpectedly on September 6, 2013. Dave was a C.P.A., the Chamber’s treasurer and a good friend. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior interested in studying in the field of accounting.
